CALIFORNIA: Vote YES on Prop 2!

  1. onechance
  2. related topics
The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, an initiative that will appear on California's November 2008 ballot.

It is cruel and inhumane to confine animals in cages so small they can’t turn around or stretch their limbs. All animals deserve humane treatment, including those raised for food.
This has already been passed in various other states.

Vote YES on Prop #2 to protect animals from unacceptable abuse.

I worked very hard along with hundreds of other hard working volunteers to get enough signatures to get this on the ballot (over 800,000 signers!) so please help get this passed.

It's NOT about taking your meat away, it IS about humane treatment while they are alive.

I know not all of you are in California, but you probably know someone that is, so PLEASE forward this information!

VOTE YES ON PROP 2!

Thank you-

We can tell a lot about ourselves by the way we treat our elders, our children, and our animals.

  • If they do taste better when treated humanely, then yes. Otherwise I don't care.

  • Definately, it's sick when cows cannot move, or they're impregnated over and over again and have their calves taken away and turned into veal, soley for the milk.

  • this proposition, once approved, would be an amendment in district 20 of
CA's health and safety code. chapters in d20 cover human experimentation,
human cloning, infant safety, hazardous waste control, toxic mold; [and a few
that pertain to animals and their welfare] force feeding of birds, treatment of
horses and other equines, treatment of wild and domestic animals in traveling
    circuses and carnivals.

this initiative belongs here, rightfully, where we make measures to protect
our own health and safety. it is in this place where we can extend, if not
purely for our self-preservation, respect and gratitude to those that ultimately
    sustain us.

this is where we make a palpable, perceptible mark as humans being humane.
  • Believe me, I will get everybody I know, to vote on this. If I could I would vote more than once.

  • Thanks everybody. Your responses are encouraging. I think this WILL pass, as long as we spread the word.

  • For those of you who don't live in CA you can help! Factory egg farmers from out of state are throwing hundreds of thousand of dollars in attempt to defeat Prop 2 (i.e. United Egg Producer from Georgia gave $185,000).

PLEASE go to https://www.humanecalifornia.org/content/index.php?pid=.... You can download a banner to your webpage and you can also help raise funds by donating as little as $20. AZ, FL, OR & CO have all passed some legislation banning these practices. We need a victory in CA to get the ball rolling across the country. THANKS! :)

  • its a bunch of lies from the extreme Anime right groups and this bill as read it and have researched it will doing nothing good for the animals but have them killed off as the farms close and move out of the state.

If you want to spend $7.50 (the current price fora carton for eggs that are from a Organic farm in this state) to even more when all eggs come in from out side of this state where in the LAST 10 YEAR there no contaminated eggs from caged or un-caged birds

This bil is filled with lies you just have to really dig but none her want the truth out that is why H$U$ is suing to keep groups from getting the word out till after the election look it up see the truth do let extremest preach lies to you ..

If the Animal right groups are telling you truth why sue to keep others from speaking up against Prop 2?

It took me less than 3 days to fine the info that this is just another attack on the American farm by people who just want no one to eat meat..hey i don't stop them eating from what they want.. or maybe i should...heck if they can go around protesting meat eating then maybe we should go after Vegans ? I mean Hitler was one and look how sane he was ...Oh wait he wasn't was he?

90% of what Prop 2 is looking to do away with is already done.

I am not farmer or do have any thing to with egg farming I am a voter and I work in High Tech field
I just all this extreme Animal rights Lies too much to not say something.

  • If Prop 2 becomes law, virtually all our eggs will be imported from out of state. How fresh will they be then?

If Prop 2 becomes law, laying hens will be exposed to Bird Flue on a grand scale. How healthy will they be then?

If Prop 2 becomes law, eggs contaminated by salmonella will exponentially increase because standard safety mechanisms will be outlawed. How safe will eggs be then?

Right now, California has had ZERO cases of salmonella due to egg consumption for the past 10 years, The rest of the nation has had 118,000 cases. Do you want this to change - for the worse?

California produces 10% of the nation's eggs. 50% of its' eggs are already imported from outside the state. According to UC Davis economic studies, Prop 2 will destroy the egg industry in our state. It will cause thousands of workers to lose their jobs. All major egg producers will be forced by the sheer economics of spending over $600 MILLION to comply with Prop 2's requirements.

How will low income families get their protein? How will their children grow properly, with the possibility of normal mental and physical development, if they don't have access to cheap protein sources? What about the elderly? The disabled? Those on fixed incomes?

H$U$ and Farm Sanctuary have spent far more than any egg farmers have to get this Proposition passed. Do you care? Follow the money! Why, given the above results - which WILL HAPPEN if Prop 2 passes - do you think these animal rights groups are pushing this issue?

H$U$ sued UCDavis and the USDA to keep them from reaching out to the public about the effects of Prop 2. In other words - they silenced their opponents in court. Does that not make you feel a bit... curious... about their agenda?

The judge in the USDA case said the government could not use funds earmarked for ads encouraging Californians to buy locally produced eggs until after the November ballot, stating that such ads would effectively cause voters to vote against Prop 2. In other words: even the judge believes that Proposition 2 will destroy the California egg industry.

THINK. Vote NO on Proposition 2.
  • One of the big scams in the meat and dairy industry is that people need more protein. Did you know that many fruits and vegetables already have protein? Did you know that one can of V8 Vegetable Juice has three grams of protein. We get protein in grains, soy products and starch foods.

California already buys 50% of its eggs from outside of the state. Some of the packaging may say a town in California, but they outsource the products from out of state. So the equal amount of eggs are still going to be coming into the state.

I have read both sides of this issue and for me there came only one choice. Be humane and help the animals that feed you.

Do your research and see the video's of conditions in which these animals live in.

  • This is part of a plan by HSUS to force a vegan lifestyle on all of us. They claim that this law was passed in Florida and had no impact on food costs. That is because it related to hog farming and Florida had no hog farming. This was a calculated move on the part of HSUS. Pass in a state with no opposition force (no one impacted) then tell the people in the next state that we did it in Florida and prices did not go up!
In CA the issue is egg production and all competent analysis indicates it will wipe out the egg industry in CA and all eggs will need to be shipped in from other states or countries where the standards for sanitation are not as high and polution and cost from shipping will be incurred. Now you have a choice buy LOCAL CA eggs which are either free range or from battery laying hens. Prop 2 will eliminate this choice it will cost the state millions in lost jobs and revenue and end all local animal food production in CA. And don't be clueless here, the millions of laying hens in CA will not find homes on Old MacDonald's farm. They will not even be shipped to other egg farms. They will be exterminated as cheaply as possible. This will result in the deaths of millions of laying hens.

This is a bad idea and HSUS has used its huge war chest funds to get a court injunction so UC Davis and other knowledgeable sources cannot make their findings known.

What of all the low income people who depend on eggs as a source of food? What about all the diseases resulting from eggs brought in from Mexico.
    Maggie1952
  • Maggie: There were five hog farms in Florida when the bill passed. Two closed down and killed all their pigs rather then take the seven years alloted to change. Two made the transition that went into affect this year and the other one closed due to zoning of the land where he had his business and had to shut down. The people got tired of the smell coming from the property.

Regardless if we get the eggs through these factory farms in California or out of state they are not healthy for people to eat.

It is not humane for the animals. Put aside HSUS and its agenda, do you think it is humane to keep eight to ten chickens in a battary cage where they cannot move around or raise their limbs and live only two years to the most before they are pulled out and thrown into a wood chip cutter alive?
    LeahH
  • Prop 2 is a bogus issue that HSUS is using to try and get more control over people's lives. They intend to stop all use of animals for food, fiber, companionship or as biomedical research subjects.

It is not true that battery-cage hens are more stressed than so-called "cage-free" hens. A study was done in which stres hormones were measured in hens in the two types of housing, and the battery hens had equal or lower levels, on the average, than the "cage-free" hens.

Furthermore, hens are not sweet, charming animals. They are vicious and cannibalistic. In small groups they quickly establish their hierarchy (pecking order, the term having come from studies of chickens) and live peacefully with their cagemates. In a "cage-free" house where thousands of chickens live with the same average floor space as in the battery cages (did you know that?), they are continually meeting new hens and having to fight for status. As a result, many are injured and are then pecked to death, and eaten, by the rest of the hens.

Chickens are omnivores. They eat animal protein any time they can get it -- including other members of their own species.

When chickens are kept in the "cage-free" barns, they frequently lay their eggs on the floor instead of in the nest boxes, where the possibility of Salmonella contamination is high, due to contact with feces. This does not happen in battery cages, because th eggs roll out of the cages as soon as they are laid, minimizing the chance of contamination.

If I lived in California, I'd vote NO on Proposition 2.

  • I have to agree with Sheila in NJ. Chickens are very cannibalistic birds. Free ranging chickens will kill and eat the weaker birds in a flock. They will also eat their own eggs. They aren't particular whether the protein they eat is alive or dead, or how long it has been dead. They will lay eggs anywhere they happen to be and the risk of salmonella is very high.
Caged hens eat only what is in their feeders and over the years, egg farmers have learned what to feed them to lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol in the eggs. I agree that eggs have more flavor in free range hens, but they are also much higher in bad chloesterol levels.
UC Davis and the AVMA both agree that the idea of finding more humane ways to house animals is always a good thing, but the safety measures of the food produced by the animals has to be just as high in importance.
80% of Americans used to live in rural areas and understood animal husbandry and food production.. Now only about 20% live rurally and understand it. It is impossible to feed the number of people in our country without the large factory farms. People who have no understanding of what is needed to insure the safety of food produced should not be trying to change the way the animals are housed for their own safety and the safety of the food produced.
It is not just the protein itself that comes from eggs, meat, and meat products that is important, but there are certain enzymes and nutrients in animal protein that is not found in ANY vegetable protein.
In this time of serious financial problems in this country, voting yes on proposition 2 will majorly impact not only food safety and production, but also will cause farms to close, costing many people their jobs and livlihoods. It will drive food prices up even more than they already are and cost lower income families protein sources they need to live on.
To pass proposition 2 will cause an economic impact our country can ill afford. People would be well advised to check the links provided in some of the previous posts to read from the experts how badly passing proposition 2 will impact the farming industry and our country's economy before voting for something that can do irrepairable harm to us all.

  • Currently there are 22 organic egg farms in California and like one of you "no people" said there has not been a case of salmonella egg poisoning in California in 10 years. Nor a case of the Asian Bird virus nor any avian bird viruses. Do you know how many types there are?

The issue is not about salmonella, but about humane treatment of animals. It is also about the quality of the eggs one eats.

Who does Big Factory Farm hurt? They hurt the family farmer. It was shown in studies that when the big farms moved in, small farmers could not compete.

My heart desire would be for those against this bill to have their employers put you stacked up in battary cages with no windows or fresh air each day.

You would be calling the EEOC faster than you can scratch. Sadly chickens cannot do that themselves, so there are those that fight for them.

We are what we eat. The eggs in factory farms are of far less quality than the eggs at organic free range farms.

As for hurting each other, throw in a few good rooster to control the flock and see what happens. It is what we do at our farm and works like a charm. He earns his keep very well.
    LeahH
  • I can't believe anyone would be so naive to think that small family farms can supply the food needs of the state of California at a reasonable price.
    epeningt
  • One has to remember one important point. Who controls the food controls the people.

It is much easier to control big food industries than a lot of smaller independent farmers.

What we have to learn to do is cut back on our consumption of meat, eggs and dairy, get rid of the factory farms and allow people to start up and develop more independent family farms and we will see a good change not only in quality farming, but quality food.

As I read on a post someplace. On my big factory farm I sell the eggs to the public, but on my side egg farm in which I raise chickens open range for my family and me we eat.

These big factory farms are all supported and controlled by the government and then the government will control the food if a crisis were to arise, like what is going on presently.

There is nothing wrong with eating meat, eggs or dairy products, but the secret of health is to eat in moderation what we do eat. People today eat way too much of these foods and it is affecting their health.

Take it from someone who knows.
    LeahH
  • Let's think this through. If the small farms cannot compete with the factory farms, they go out of business. This has been going on since the 1940's which the factory farms started to push out the small farmers.

Now if there are no more family farms, who will you buy from? The factory farm. When you have no other option than to buy from the factory farm, then they will start to raise the prices because there is nothing to stop them from doing so. There will be no demand for quality of the products that one buys.

Where will you go then to find cheaper eggs?

Competition in the open market is what keeps prices down. The more competition there is all around the better for the consumer. That is the American Way.

The factory farms as they are today are destroying the very fabric of the American economy. By making them reduce their production level they will be forced to compete in the open market and offer quality products as they should.
    LeahH
  • In truth the animal right groups are not the one that are running the farms they have no true understanding of how these work.. "throw in a few good rooster to control the flock" Wow that is like so wrong ...Please..
Free market and better prices? Not in this age sorry the cost of the free range farm is well above the stander farm and most are not serving the state of today's economic problems.

this bill solves nothing to do with cage birds the one stated are going away and this bill has nothing to do with prop 2. this is just another way for the groups that want to eliminate food that do not like like Meat ,Eggs and Milk and to go after ownership of animals and those that breed animals for farm and pet.
