A Texas oilman wants to build windfarms across the US windbelt, starting in Texas and stretching north. At a cost of $12 billion it would be completed in 2014 and cover about 20% of the nation's energy. T. Boone Pickens (great name for an oilman, no?) wants whomever is elected president to make it their policy within the first 100 days in office to execute this plan. Now wouldn't that be something?

Good news!

T boone Pickens could probably pay for it out of his own Pocket or get the financing for it

Great idea!

But the problem I can see now is: environmentalists going nuts over windfarms.
While I do consider myself as an environmentalist, I still see the need for wind generation and solar farms.
Humans have altered the environment, and they are here to stay, until the next asteroid strike or mega-volcano, and unfortunately wildlife and the land has paid a heavy price.
We are renters of this little spot in the universe, and we have to take care of it, but we do also have to live. -
I don't necessarily think being excited about windfarms is bad. But developing alternative ways that are economically feasible and have staying power is important. Developing some way of harnessing power and a structure that isn't going to crumble in the next 10 years is crucial. I have no doubt we're going to make a few mistakes when all is said and done. Bureaucracy will rear it's head; law-makers and lobbyists will go at it. Somewhere in between, we'll hopefully find a renewable energy source/sources, that works.
