Farm-raised tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America, has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Hold on - you guys really eat that thing on the photo there?
Just wondering, as i don't even know the fish. -
mmm, bacon.
-
The tilapia I've had looked nothing like that... and that picture gives me another reason to not eat it again. Anyway, I'm not surprised. Any food stuff that is popular in the good ol' US of A is bound to kill you or leave you with a lot of health issues.

Tilapia is one of the better sellers at the store I work at, and it's farm raised in China. An increasing amount of people are choosing not to get it though since it is from China. Many do not avoid bacon so I doubt people will avoid tilapia if they hear about its unhealthiness.

And french fries are vegetables...they'd go well with the Tilapia.

Of all things, Tilapia is actually considered to have low Mercury levels. But, farmed Tilapia is injected with growth hormones at a specific stage in development so that the fish ends up Male, yielding more meat. Tilapia is also a "cleaner" fish that eats droppings from other fish and all leftover antibiotics and hormones, thus cleaning the water.
And it does look just like the photo- only I think that one is female. -
As a server at a fish restaurant, this is great news. Tilapia not only has no flavor, a poor texture, but is also the cheapest thing on the menu because it's so mass produced. That's why it's the favorite of rednecks and cheap-skates.
In fact, since it has no redeeming value I propose a nation wide ban of Tilapia...for the health risks, of course.-

the funny thing is tilapia is still probably healthier than 90% of the crap you find in the average supermarket/household kitchen...

My question is -- how often do we eat tilapia without knowing it IS tilapia???? For example, is it the fish used in fish & chips?? Fish sticks??

The farm raised Tilapia is terrible for you, absolutely horrible.
I have only had wild Tilapai once. It was given to me by the Embera Indian tribe in Panama. It was delicious!
They caught it fresh from the Chagras river that morning. -
I bet Panamanian Tilapia is fantastic. Once it becomes American it loses all value... like most things I guess.
