The US has warned Iran to stop missile testing if it wants to gain the trust of the world, after "war games" in the Gulf today that Iranian officials said were a response to US and Israeli threats.
Iran demonstrated its military force when it test-fired nine long and medium range missiles in the strategic Strait of Hormouz, through which 40% of the world's oil passes.
Speaking from Japan where President George Bush has attended the G8 summit, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the Iranians should "refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world".
"The Iranian regime only furthers the isolation of the Iranian people from the international community when it engages in this sort of activity," he said.
Washington said Iran's development of ballistic missiles violated UN security council resolutions.
But it added that the US was committed to pursuing a diplomatic solution to the impasse over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The practice shots by Iran's elite revolutionary guards were another in a series of conflicting messages coming out of the country over its nuclear programme and relations with the US and Israel.
General Hossein Salami, the guards' navy commander, told state television today that the test missiles exercise, called "The Great Prophet 3", would "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language".
An Iranian news agency quoted Salami as saying: "Our hands are always on the trigger and our missiles are ready for launch."
But less than a day ago, the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, dismissed fears that Israel and the United States could be preparing to attack his country, calling the possibility a "funny joke".
At a press conference during a visit to Malaysia yesterday, Ahmadinejad said: "I assure you that there won't be any war in the future."
The G8 expressed "serious concern" over the risks posed by Iran's nuclear programme and urged Tehran to suspend all uranium enrichment-related activities.
"We call on Iran to respond to the updated incentives package in a constructive manner," a G8 statement said today. "We also urge Iran to act in a more responsible and constructive manner in the region, particularly in the context of the Middle East peace process and the stability of Iraq and Afghanistan."
Television reports said the missiles fired included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is equipped with a conventional warhead weighing a tonne.
Such a missile could reach Israel, Turkey, Afghanistan or Pakistan.
Israel's military has also flexed its muscles in recent months as tensions with Iran have risen, sending warplanes over the eastern Mediterranean in June.
US officials described that incident as a possible rehearsal for a strike on Iran's nuclear programme, which the west fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons.
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev today said Israel "does not desire hostility and conflict with Iran".

The recent Isreali long range bomber "practice" runs were an obvious show of force. As if to say to Iran, " We can reach you, if we want to". Iran has now replied in like terms. This posturing need not go unnoticed by our world community. This administration seems to be itching for a conflict with Iran, which is another middle eastern misadventure that we literally cannot afford.

how foolish for anyone to think that the bush administration has any authority whatsoever to speak on the matter of gaining "the trust of the world".. or the matter of "trust" in general..
so let's recap shall we?
israel performs military exercises..
no comment..
iran performs military exercises (after israel's mind you)..
this is a violation of UN security council resolutions and should not be repeated.. iran should refrain from further missile testing and is damaging its relation with the rest of the world..
regardless of how villainous the president of iran may be, it is illogical to allow one party to engage in one activity and then turn around and chastise another party for doing the exact same thing..
this is a crystal clear example of the type of issue which persuades most of the world to view america as having a double standard..
but this is an argument likely to fall on deaf ears as the majority of those who are familiar with this struggle have already made up their minds and are immune to reason..
peace..

We are funding radical groups inside Iran to kill people and stir shit so the Iranians will fight back and we will have a reason to attack them. Are we stupid or what? Bush wants war and we gave him the money to wreak havoc on Iran so he can do it and attack another country that in reality is no threat to anyone unless you believe the lies.

Yes we are hypocrites.
This is not surprising after Israel's recent "Military exercises." Unsettling none the less. This made me think of the shirts and buttons from '80.

Is Israel going to retaliate?

All of this is unsettling to say the least...I am someone who didn't want the Iraq war at all and now, some 500 billion dollars later, and counting, we are still there and don't seem in any hurry to get out...we need to take care of our own country and not look around agressively for the next little kid on the playground to pick on just because it makes the safe passage of oil more possible...It's like we are heroin addicts!
That line from the other Bush war that we can't allow Iraq's invasion of Kuwait to affect our way of life was so arrogant that it is easy to see how "dub-yuh" got that way himself...let's cut the addiction and use the great American minds we have right here to develop alternatives to oil that are renewable, then we need not care what the Middle East is doing so much.
By the way, how many of you are driving slower to conserve gas? I drive the highways every day and still see big SUV gas guzzlers going eighty or more while I am trundling along at 55...here's a clue, driving slower makes your gas last longer so what are you waiting for?!?

US to Iran and all other countries of the world: "Don't you dare defend yourselves against us!"
-
I remember reading an article earlier this month which said CIA source confirmed that Iran DID NOT have intentions to create a nuclear weapon. The current administration must really think low of the intelligence of the public.
-
WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR OIL
BUSH MUST BE WONDERING HOW MUCH OIL IS IN IRAN THEY HAVE TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. -
this is nothing more than posturing and muscle flexing...an art that has been mastered by middle eastern countries for the past 60 years, and why iran TESTED 9 missles instead of LAUNCHING 9 missles at israel.

*sigh* I hope I am dead and gone before world war three comes to bear.

I agree! It seems that Israel can do no wrong but if someone else takes a step to declare their own strength, we will jump right in there. I don't understand why we continually back Israel to begin with? They have so much trouble over there with their own countrymen always killing each other fighting over a piece of land.
-
Iran testing missiles could be a good thing. I mean, our own checks and balance within the U.S. aren't working so another country with nuclear capability could 'keep us in line'.

Not everything Israel does it right and not everything Iran does is wrong and vice versa, but I will say this, Iran is well known for its human rights outrages, a simple google search will show executions of homosexuals in Iran. The Bush/Cheney white house may be trying to force war, but Iran is also playing right into their hands, and Iran's government isn't exactly pure as the driven snow either.

Oh no, I think Iran's leaders are very evil too; but what right do we as a country have to tell them how to run their country? They were just standing up for themselves. And Bushit talking about trust is just ridiculous since he has lost the trust of more than 2/3 of his own countrymen and we can't wait until he is gone. I really wish he would just skulk away until the end of the year, he can still do alot of damage in 5 months.

This may be marginally off topic, but related to the whole isreal posts above...
I recently saw "Fight Quest" on Discovery Channel and there was one episode where they visit Isreal to be imersed in the local martial art of Krav Maga. They split into two groups, one spending a week with a local "city based" teacher an the other with a military intallation. From there it was all out violence as the locals pretty much every day beat the snot out of the two hosts. It wasnt like any other country or martial art. Lacked all beauty and spiritualism of any kind. Just violence because at any time the enemy could attack.
After watching the episode I walked away with this overwhelming feeling that life in Isreal is all about fear, aggression, and anger. The whole episode left me ill and very thankful that I dont live in that area where violence and aggression appears to be a normal part of life.

Seems only fair after Israel went tear-assing around the middle east with over 100 planes a couple weeks ago.

hasn't it already been put out there that Iran would receive incentives and US assistance in developing a peaceful nuclear program - the caveat being that Iran's nuclear program would be under the direct scrutiny of the US ? f--k "pride" , Iran should jump at this offer , if it's still "on the table" , and if it doesn't i suppose it's clear that Iran is seeking nukes , in which case , air strikes are clearly necessary - not full on war , but some warning shots .
neither russia nor china or any other nation would declare war on the US were air strikes to be conducted against Iran - despite what anyone may think , the US cannot be defeated ( "defeated " in the sense of being rendered incapable of offensive operations and having "surrender" as the only option for survival ) , and never will be . full scale war will never occur again . -
This is hilarious
We do missile tests, Israel does missile tests
We have nukes, Israel has nukes
We have a hawkish religious fundamentalist conservative regime, Israel has hawkish religious fundamentalist conservative regime
We dislike our government, Israelis dislike their governmentWhat's the big deal when Iran's hawkish religious fundamentalist conservative regime does missile tests and wants nukes?
By the way Iranians dislike their government too...
What's the difference people?
What's the difference? -
No one should be "testing" weapons anymore. We know what they do. Big Boom!
