After two and a half years, liquor stores are starting to reopen in Baghdad. During the sectarian 'uprisings' in 2006, "al-Qa'ida militants were burning down liquor stores and shooting their owners", but now alcohol has flooded back into the city centre, and shop owners are proudly proclaiming it.
These are being hailed as signs that the control of militant gunmen is also subsiding around the city, and now young men "openly drink beer in some, if not all streets": This would simply not have been possible two years ago. It is reported that "other social freedoms have also expanded", and that "strict Islamic dress for women is no longer quite so common".
Although it seems strange to be proclaiming that drunks roaming the streets would be a GOOD sign, it certainly demonstrates that people are living in slightly less fear than before, although its only relative, and some have been ciritcal of overstating the significance of this move.
