Portland isn't really all that bike friendly. The drivers might be more friendly but the city isnt really built for bicyclists. The most friendly bike place Ive ridden is Fort Collins, CO, where fat tire is brewed. They have a 4k bicycle parade every year. Denver is pretty bike friendly too. Small towns though.

Bikes aren't simply a temporary reaction to high gas prices - they are here to stay. Local, state and the Federal government need to accommodate us, the people by providing safe places to ride not just for enjoyment, but as means of transportation to and from work.

That's why I only ride my bike on the bike path. I wish I was living in Portland, OR or Davis, CA where it's bike friendly.

for those of you that asked, a local feed here in SF posted this video and 2 people have responded from the ride.
------------------
RIDER A)
(OK, I was on this ride and will make it very clear what happened. As our group of about 23 riders headed up the Embarcadero, the passenger of the SUV opened their door in front of a group of riders in the bike lane while the car was still in motion. As the car came to a stop, one of our riders approached the car and said "that really isn't cool." The passenger said something to the effect of "get your hands off our car" and proceeded to open the door and physically confront the bicyclist. As you can see from the video, the bicyclist responded. As for onlookers egging him on? Quite the opposite. Most encouraged the passenger to get back into his friend's SUV and for the bicyclist to get back on the ride. Most of our riders got out of the bike lane and onto the sidewalk to not block traffic further while this was all happening. That's it.------------------
RIDER B)
I was one of those riders going out for a weekly ride. The driver was swerving 'pretending' that he was going to hit one of the riders. Then the passenger was opening and closing his door into the bike lane and then finally did knock him off his bike. Yes, the bicyclist lost it but so then would I if that had happened to me. I have almost been doored many times and just choose to educate the person rather than to clobber them. This, on the other hand, was done with maliciousness on the side of the driver and passenger. They were looking for a fight and out to hurt someone with their antics. After one scuffle, we went to leave and the guy kept on going after the cyclist physically and yelling out insults all the while grabbing his bottle as if he was going to swing with it. The whole situation was f**ckd up. We just wanted to have a ride on a beautiful day not get in a brawl our first 5 minutes out. - 3 years ago

It seems to take road rage to a whole new level, where one sie has the clear disadvantage of not driving in a small tank.

There is no justice, just us!
Currently there are too many unqualified sheeple motorists abusing the roads.

It will definetly have more of these fights as the transition from cars to bikes takes place. The road is not owned by the person driving a car, both drivers and cyclists must learn to use the road together or a street browl can erupt. Thanks Meligrosa for your on the spot reporting

It is ignorant to think that b/c you are riding a bike that you are guarenteed safety. I am not a bad driver but I get tired sometimes and drift and drive by braille a lot.
There are too many stupid drivers and dumbass bikers= bad combo.
go ride in a park and not the streets

Omordn, do not give up that easy. My District Captain advises to be persistent. I am myself do not like but I know I have to do anyways--- and that it is to be on the phone pushing people to do the work that they suppose to do. But this is what you must do to get things done! Push! Find out and contact your City Council or Supervisor. Keep escalating your concerns to the higher levels. Some joke that the Government it is like a girl half way through an orgasm. You are not going to get her joy if you don't keep pushing! Be nice! However do not compromise yourself with corruption!

I'd like to know what lead up to this. This part of the city has nice bike lanes and a huge sidewalk. I'm not sure why a person on either side would have difficulty sharing the road.

I think some provoking language was initiated.
like I said Im uncertain b/c I was way in the back and was worried some accident had happened as both bike and vehicle traffic stopped. Im not friends with the riders, but was chatting with a few of them during that stretch, and they were all super mellow and had no bad attitude whatsoever.
- The sidewalks at that hour of the day are packed with joggers and walkers, so unless you are slowly cruising, it isn't polite to use the sidewalk (I agree, it is huge). - 3 years ago

By the way this movie just represents some parts of the reality of the streets where there will be always a person willing to cause trouble. These people should be stripped from their rights to drive. If you took the time to read your instructions when you first took your driving test it says you should not be driven by a hot temper behavior and you must be in control at all times. Driving a machine and a bike it is a great responsibility. You must respect people around you at all times. Have the mind set to not assume anything.

Thanks stopnoise. I have called the department and of course... not much help. The interpretation of these bike laws need to be more specific.

I suggest you to get down to your nearest Police Dep. and have a talk with your Police Captain and explain your valid arguments. Each place have their own terrain and landscape leaving no choice to you, the Biker. It is the obligation of your City of provide bike lanes. In the absence of biker lanes and you feel that the traffic it is hostile to you or you just don't have the faith to go for, you can ride on the sidewalk as long you understand:
1. Sidewalk is for pedestrians. That means you will have to give preference to pedestrian first and never, ever assume a pedestrian must get out of the way for you. On the contrary, You must get out of the way for pedestrians.
2. Never speed on sidewalks unless you have enough space to be away from human contact, be defensive!
3. Be always attentive and responsible! - 3 years ago

I have to agree that riding a bike can be really dangerous, even if there is a bike lane. I don't even live in a big city and going the 9 blocks from my house to down town can be treacherous. Until you really start using it as a mode of transportation, you aren't really aware of the dangers, and even then, it's hard to be constantly on the look-out for bikers when you're driving.

People who drive really need to start respecting bike riders. I didn't realize how selfish and inconsiderate MOST drivers are until I started riding my bike as a means of transportation. There have been MANY times that I have almost gotten hit, and if it were not for alertness, terrible things could have passed, and it is only natural to get ANGRY. This video is just one of the many examples to why it is so important that we respect each other on the road.

As more and more people start riding bikes, drivers are going to need to learn how to share the damn road lest we want more of these altercations, no matter how amusing. :p
