A third of the world's reef-building corals are now at risk of extinction, say scientists. A recent study has listed 231 of the 704 species classified as 'vulnerable', 'endangered' or 'critically endangered', up from only 13 species just a decade ago. The coral reefs support large ecosystems of marine life and vegetation and their extinction would have devastating consequences on the environment.
