A lesbian couple from Wisconsin who are planning to head out of state to marry could face nine months of jail time and a fine of up to $10,000 for fraud, according to reports by Salon today.
Kathy Cox and Kim Whalen have been together for over 20 years and plan to tie the knot on 8/8/08 in California, but an old law from 1915 prohibits couples from leaving the state to marry and then returning with a union that isn't valid in Wisconsin.
The couple are planning to go ahead anyway, says Cox, "The pioneers get the arrows, and the settlers get the land. So we'll take a few arrows."
Should utterly ridiculous laws like this be, um, outlawed? Could it be that they conveniently provide the anti-same-sex marriage brigade with ammunition to punish and prevent gay marriages?

gives ammunition to the anti-same-sex-marriage brigade. To be honest though, marriage is only a legal thing, it shouldnt be so hard to do. If two people have been living together and in a relationship for so many years there is little you can do about it. If it becomes such a problem, why dont people have a little ceremony all their own and draw up legal documents for division of assets?

With laws like this on the books everywhere I find it ridiculous when states or state/local patrolmen actually enforce such an outdated law. They only enforce rules on the books when they are really trying to drive home a point-- that they really don't want to be in office long-term.

most of the problem is that
we stright people are jellious
cous y should gays be happly
marred if our marriges all
suck -
The Federal government needs to act on the matter of marriage to harmonise the laws.
My belief is that 'all this guff' about marriage is for reproduction etc.. is nonsense. Marriage in the common law is a contract about the acquisition and division of property, whatever the religious trappings also associated with it.
All people should have equal rights under the law regardless of gender or sexual orientation.-

being able to reproduce? that's your basis for getting married? not love?
i intend on marrying a woman and i can assure you that we will both reproduce. two women ensures that we can reproduce twice as many kids as any straight couple. so can we get married with your argument?
and if it's all about reproduction then infertile people should not get married. if they find out they can't reproduce after marriage well hell they should just get a divorce. it's not like they can have kids right?-

Why are they going to California to get married.
They will be unmarried while they are in Jail on November 4th when people vote again to overide these 4 men in black robes from San Francisco
That is a lot of money wasted and a lot of propaganda for nothing. -
Apparently, you don't understand the concept of a sit-in (or marry-in). It's a martyrdom. You have to at least admit that the punishment is excessive.

soleil: why do you assume that the biological parent would not be in the child's life?

Donkey,
So you are saying the real father will be around but not with you.
He will be standing by while the child has two mothers who may carry children from other fathers ?
All I can do is wish you a lot of luck -
i don't understand your logic. so if a straight couple had a donor parent are they putting some horrible burden on the children?
