Scooters Pollution Radio Report - Part One

This is my response to "Mods on Scooters"

http://current.com/items/87006341_mods_on_scooters

First let me express here that I have nothing against people gathering in a club for dancing and having fun. What I do not agree it is with the false ideology where people lose their sight of their surroundings and community when they are traveling with these machines. Maybe in the future we will have better and environmentally friendly machines that won't pollute or make excessive noise. Until that time, Please cool down!

I do not want people to be falsely "sorry" about this issue! I want them to learn and understand that it is my rights of quietness that counts and NOT their desire to pollute the environment or disrupt my daily living with an act of acoustic trespassing.

One little scooter riding up hill it is already an acoustic problem. Now imagine a group of them blasting their pollution. It is like a bomb!

    • Stopnoise, I have to agree w/ you on this one, although we probably live in very different places.

I think the point is being made about riders who have no regard for others -- of course there are courteous/responsible riders out there.

You may think this type of noise only affects urban or suburban neighborhoods...not so!

I live in a rural town w/ 2200 residents...our neighborhood streets are unpaved trails, and are too narrow according to the county to be paved. Technically, each homeowner owns the half of the trail in front of their house.

Our problem is ATV's and dirtbikes. The kids (and some adults) rip through our streets at 30-40 mph and it DESTROYS the peaceful quiet that most of us moved here for. It is illegal here to ride on trails at more than 15 mph, but by the time we call the sheriff and they arrive, usually the bikers are gone.
If they are caught, they need to show their permit to ride and may get a citation/fine -- not much deterrent.

It can get so bad here that the sound of dirt bikes is all you hear for hours on a Sat. or Sun.

Although it destroys our roads and our peace, I only call when I see real young children riding w/o helmets; I have seen kids around age 10 riding w/ 3 or 4 year olds in their laps, both w/ no helmets. Then I call.

The noise, however, is the real quality of life issue.
Our town is 3 mi. from a huge state 4x4 recreation area, but I guess these people are too lazy to put their vehicles in the truck and go play there.

To get back to Stopnoise's topic -- I remember the noise of living in the city, and I think too many people figure "it's already loud, so what's one more sound layer on top of it all." Well, living out here in the country I can tell you that the sound of a bike is pretty significant. Just because one is in an urban landscape doesn't excuse the excessiveness of some riding behaviors.

    • So where was the clip of them riding down the hill creating such a problem? I hardly think you have reason to be upset for these kids "making noise." As for the environmental aspect, I think those scooters get far better gas mileage than any car.

This is not about being upset, this is about understanding legislative issues and to learn that I have the right of quietness in my own home, others do not have the right to make noise in the perimeter unless it is a case of emergency. Most of the noise out there today is just excessive and can be mitigated for abatement.

    • And then there was this ONE time when I was watching tv late at night -- actually Saturday Night Live. I heard this loud vvvvrrrrrooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmm and I hear this car take off with a huge roaring engine sound at about ten minutes to one am, and then there was this smell of burning rubber for about ten or fifteen minutes. Kind of like what you are saying. mmmhmmmm.

"Through history, every fine man and women rouse up to many challenges and from there solutions was designed and developed to resolve logistical health and environmental issues for the benefit and quality of human life."

The solution is to learn wireless networking and install 24/7 acoustic cameras around your perimeter.

The second part is to have a good relationship and help of you your PD.
The third part is to work with the Legislative and Judicial System.

It is easy than what some people think. Everything today can be done electronically through the computer.
