The Netherlands, with its permissive marijuana laws, may be known as the cannabis capital of the world. But a survey published this month in PLoS Medicine, a journal of the Public Library of Science, suggests that the Dutch don't actually experiment with pot as much as one would expect. Despite tougher drug policies in this country, Americans were twice as likely to have tried marijuana than the Dutch, according to the survey. In fact, Americans were more likely to have tried marijuana or cocaine than people in any of the 16 other countries, including France, Spain, South Africa, Mexico and Colombia, that the survey covered.

you can't compare american cannabis with dutch cannabis, can you?

Hell yeah. The anti-pot laws are a JOKE. Almost anyone tries it out. I can't think of any other law so vigorously prosecuted by the Incarceration Industry and so openly defied by the general public. By the time information makes it to Time Magazine, It's been known about for a while.
LEGALIZE POT NOW. -
Legalize it - Treat it like alcohol and tobacco. Similar laws, similar enforcement.
Tax it - The Angry Economist once came up with the number of 11.8 Billion Dollars in tax revenue... Per year. And that's just an est. based on $100/pack of cig-sized joints, per week, per year. -
Forbidden fruit is always more tempting than permitted fruit.

No please don't ever legalize it. You see I don't want corporate America getting ahold of such a wonderful thing as pot. Can you imaging what they would do to "maximize profit?" The things they would add to it? Look at tobacco, all the crap they add to it for what ever reason. Have you ever smoked straight tobacco? It's way different then what they call cigarettes. I fear that if "tabacco ink" became involved pot as we know it would be no more. As for healthly, only until they start adding things to make it last longer or taste better. I would rather get it off the streets then from Wal-mart thank you very much.
-
Legalizing it would mean that everyone could grow their own, import it, etc., so yes, legalize it.

I hope I live to see the day when it is legalized for everyone not just the very sick. In the meantime just keep buying it on the downlow like I have been doing for years.

Anthony notes, it's a matter of culture: the U.S. is home to a huge baby boomer population that came of age when experimenting with drugs was a part of the social fabric. "It became a more mass population phenomenon during a period when there were a large number of young people who were in the process of creating a culture of their own," Anthony says.
This is a great quote. The baby boomers realized it's good for you and the government was lying to them.-

Duh...people always want what they cant have more! Weed is just not a big deal in the Netherlands. And is it really suprising that Americans have consumed more or something? ...No
-
The secret government that runs this country would like to see us all strung out on drugs -- the whiter the powder the better for them. They encourage drug use by dumping tons of drugs on our streets then use the drug culture as an excue to maintain the drug war.
Legalize pot - get the government out of the cocaine, crack business. -
I'm pro-legalizing pot. I'm not a pot smoker though. I'm also pro-legalizing the hemp industry in full-force.
However, I voted this story down a notch because there are more important things afoot right now than worrying about whether or not people can get recreational smokes. No disrespect intended.
C'mon people... priorities. -
There is nothing like prohibition to entice.
-
People need more education on the subject of marijuana.
It is illegal because it is so easy to grow and harvest and will practically grow anywhere. You can brew your own beer, but it ain't easy, and if you brew over a certain amount, you have to have a license and / or pay taxes and other crap. Try growing and harvesting tobacco, ain't too easy. Cigarettes are down to a science with the least possible amount of tobacco and the most possible amount of crap, optimized to keep people hooked and make the max amount of money possible.
Seriously people, don't you see that?! -
that bud in the pic looks pretty schwagyy . roll up some of that gods gift times x3 or some g-13 then get at me. I love living in Cali =)
-
Of course! Just illustrates how our country goes about things the wrong way.
-
If anyone has Netflix, the have this online for instant viewing, Super High Me, a documentary (lol) made with a comedian that stops smoking pot for 30 days then does it constantly for 30 days. Funny how he gains 8 pounds, his lung capacity is unaffected, his sperm count goes up, he telepathic abilities seem heightened, etc.. Good watch.. As well, a classic video by Talking Heads called, 'Stop Making Sense' ... nothing to do with ganj, but good to listen to / watch while baked..

I know a lot of people commented in favor of legalizing it and I, myself, do agree in that regard. However, a friend of mine disagrees because he would prefer it remain a very profitable illegal substance which people can make a living on rather than opening it up to huge corporate pot farms which endanger its street value.
Any thoughts? -
the US gov't should just legalize pot. i mean its a good cash crop that can help the economy and smoking it isn't as dangerous as other drugs. in my opinion alchohol is more deadly than marajuana
-
I'm pro-pot all the way but we cant ask for total legalization because we won't get it. We need to crawl before we can walk. Legalize medical marijuana and get it to the people who NEED it the most.

Probably legalize it means that vicious and greedy companies will take it and make a horrible thing like they did with tobacco.
But could also means that you could grow it yourself for your personal use and even make a company that commercialize it in a natural and original way, like hand made joints, just the way they do it in cuba with the tobacco leaf.
In england is not legal but you still can go to Camden Town and find hundreds of stores where you can find everything from rolling paper until ganja lollipop, and is not big deal at all.
I think we just need a little bit more culture to get it legalized.-

well.. apparently hemp is one of the fastest growing biomasses.. can use it for paper, fuel, clothing, lotion, etc....
Do you all suppose some of the old politicians don't want to change things, because it might affect their well-paid jobs? As well, do you also think big oil gives them a lot of financial incentive? lol.. no crap eh -
here in beautiful America GOD BLESS US.
the only reason u don't smoke is because of your job or on parole...
witch is crazy because it's an herb..
this won't be the first of NATURAL herbs band and called eligal... -
Almost everybody in this country is on some type of drug, whether street or prescription. But that doesn't stop them from running their mouths about cannibis which is less damaging than what your doctor prescribes. There is no reason behind the war on drugs, there is no logic to back it up. Our government and a good amount of people in this country are just bitter and hipocritical. The people persecuting cannibis probably have never even tried it themselves. But they want to feel important, and probably get their "jollies" by seeing peoples lives get ruined by a "drug" that should be legal... Stupid people are frustrating.

I think the legalization of pot is a very important issue in this election because it touches on a myriad of problems we must confront.
1) This will increase taxes, I rather pay taxes than drug cartels, and we need money to pay for the war.;-)
2) We need the benefits of hemp. Think: biofuels, sustainable fibers, oils, etc. not to mention the medical benefits of pot itself.
3) for me the most important: are we going to continue filling up prisons with young people who smoke pot? This is an unjust law with horrible consequences. It must be reversed. The jobs lost to the drugwar/prison industry will be made up in the hemp/pot industry eh?-
