In 2010 when the United States fulfills it's constitutional duty to count every citizen in the United States and collect other data as it relates to public policy; the census will not count the thousands of same-sex marriages in California or Massachusetts:

"The U.S. Census Bureau, reacting to the federal Defense of Marriage Act and other mandates, plans to edit the 2010 census responses of same-sex couples who marry legally in California, Massachusetts or any other state. They will be reported as "unmarried partners," rather than married spouses, in census tabulations - a policy that will likely draw the ire of gay rights groups."

"This has been a question we've been looking at for quite a long time," said Martin O'Connell, chief of the Census Bureau's Fertility and Family Statistics Branch. "It's not something the bureau could arbitrarily or casually decide to change on a whim, because our data is used by virtually every federal agency."

Critics argue that the Census decision is political, unjustified and poor public policy. They believe the census should collect accurate information about American families, rather than create government sanctioned closets.

  • Why all the umm'ing and arr'ing. The problem could easily be solved by amending the question.

Simply ask respondents if they are married and if so is it a same sex or mixed sex marriage.
  • wouldn't that make some of the facts false, like how many people in America got married this year
  • The reason for a census is information. If the government does not want voluntary information or it is afraid of information, then why bother. They are probably able to get all the information they want from the telecoms anyway.

  • If I'm understanding this correctly, the census bureau won't count Gay marraiges until national US laws do.
State by State laws don't matter.
    Is this right?

  • This is load of Crap! Gay people should be able to be married just like anyone else. The census should be as accurate as possible and not including gay marriage is going to make the numbers it presents false. The fact that as a country we can not come together and recognized that gay people are equal to anyone else and there for should have all the rights as straight people is shameful.
If anyone is opposed to gay marriage please research divorce rates for Straight couples and then divorce rates for Gay couples. Because of how hard the Gay couples must work to be together and be recognized as married their divorce rates are extremely low. I would rather two gay guys that love each other be allowed to get married and be together forever then a straight couple get married just cause the girl gets knocked up and get divorced a few years down the road.
And to any straight people who thinks that gay people choose to be gay, just ask yourself when did you choose to be straight?

  • This is simple discrimination plain and simple. If the census bureau said they weren't going to count black couples or Mexican couples it would be thrown out immediately and people would be brought to court.

  • what the........men should not marry a man and a woman should not marry a woman. What is wrong with this country? Its just another way of trying to squeezzzzz more bennys to be sucked off it government tit. And on top of all of this, the government is trying to get rid of the middle class in our society so all there will be left is the uber-rich and the uber-poor. Oh well, at least if we are going to hell in a basket.........At least we can enjoy the ride. America, Pull your head out of your ass

  • last i checked, the article is about the census not acknowledging same sex marriages. this is not to be confused with whether same sex marriages should be allowed or not, AA. as someone stated earlier, if the census is to compile general information about its country, then it is completely counter to their mission to ignore this very important statistic. perhaps someone high up there doesn't really want to know or doesn't want the world to know how many homosexuals there are in this country...

  • Well thats bullshit!!!! A couple is a couple rather it be two men two women or a man and a woman. They should recognize all couples and this discrimination at its finest. Calling them "unmarried partners" is just plain stupid.

  • I guess that this site is pro-gay............?
It looks like it , Im sorry that the homosexuals were not wired correctly. Or mabey they cant maintain a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. Or mabey its easier to be with a person of the same sex.
In any case, the world was a better when you were in the closet.
