Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning (HSWAC) proposes to cool down buildings with seawater, rather than fossil fuel-based air conditioning units, and it is getting some serious green to back it.

  • Could other costal cities follow Honolulu's act? Let's hope so.

  • It is a great idea. How will they address Sulfate Reducing Bacteria, in an Anerobic Atmosphere? If this problem is not addressed, the production of H2S gas and corrosion by products will endanger the system! As well as the life of human technicians, supporting the system! Of course the most common approach is application of chemical biocides to control the "SRB's", this then creates an effluent dangerous to marine life.

  • I think the city of Toronto has been doing this sort of green HVAC for some time. NYC and Miama would make great test projects for mainland US. There is such an abundance of renewable energy available. Its too bad we are ruled by true anti-christs such as Bush/Chaney who destroy the earth for their own greed.

  • Science, technology, innovation and the Human mind are so incredibly cool...

I hope it works well, and is the start of these types of alternatives...

  • This is certainly a step in the right direction. With the multiple dimensions of environmental problems, every time we can find something where the pros outweigh the cons, we have accomplished something.

  • Wow this is great. Maybe we are seeing the dawn of a new wave of inventions. Like the Industrial Revolution, we are seeing the beginnings of the Green Revolution. I kind of was hoping of the Age of Reason, but I'll still take it.

  • neato! when we went to colorado last summer the hotel we stayed in didnt have the air conditioner on in the rooms because of "the delicate mountain environment" or something of that nature. the weather was so nice and mild i didnt even notice half the time. yay for mother earth.

  • We could also design buildings with no cooling, whatsoever. Mankind has lived for 10's of thousands of years without it, why not abandon it?

I grew up in the deepsouth, without airconditioning, and have spent many months in Nigeria without it. It is a luxury, if you love the Earth give it up!

  • this technofix approach is silly.
why are they pumping sea water (which costs a lot and has a lot of complications) to cool the buildings when honolulu is usually always cool? you open a window in honolulu (especially when you're 200 feet up) and you're not going to need air conditioning except for a few days a year.

this is not environmentally friendly, this is not a step in the right direction, this is not good news. this is silly and diversionary. it keeps us from seeing what really has to be done.
