Companies missing the social networking boat

Businesses are passing up on the potential social networking sites, instant messaging, and file sharing offer, research has shown. The use of such innovations in the corporate world could "increase savings, productivity and profits", but many companies are sceptical about reaching out to get involved in the movement.

The survey found strong usage of these resources amongst single people and teenagers, particularly for entertainment and keeping in touch with friends and family.

Whilst I agree that businesses who refuse to harness the social networking sea change risk betraying their Luddite complexions, I'm not sure I'd feel completely comfortable about, for example, being recruited for a new job through Twitter or Facebook. Should social networking and the corporate world overlap?

  • Businesses that don't start using these services will just flat out fail in the long run.

Their competitors will be communicating better and using free services leaving the web 2.0 naysayers in the stone age.
