We Are Not Born Gay, Sweedish Twin study Shows

Identical twins develop when one fertilized egg separates into two individuals. As such, identical twins have nearly identical DNA. Researchers study the concordance of a trait in identical twins to see whether or not a trait is genetically-linked. In a concordant pair of twins, both show the same characteristic.

Twin studies that have been conducted to date actually demonstrate that homosexuality is not genetic. As Dr. Neil Whitehead notes, “In a nutshell, if you take pairs of identical twins in which one twin is homosexual, the identical co-twin is usually not homosexual. That means, given that identical twins are always genetically identical, homosexuality cannot be genetically dictated. No-one is born gay

In general, twin studies show that when one male identical twin is gay-identified, the other will be gay-identified one time in nine, or only 11% of the time. The percentages are similar for female homosexuality. If homosexual behavior, attractions and identity were completely genetic, the similarity would be closer to 100%. What this tells us is that same-sex attracted twins are not born that way. Thus, within a pair of identical twins – where one twin has same-sex attractions – the other will have opposite-sex attractions eight out of nine times.

So what about this 2008 Swedish twin study ?

The study of twins and homosexuality was touted in a press release as “the largest in the world so far.” The authors said that “more than 7,600 Swedish twins….responded to a 2005-2006 survey of health, behaviour, and sexuality.” I

In their analysis:

Only 7 pairs of male identical twins were found where both had any same-sex partner in their lifetime;
Only 26 pairs of female identical twins were found where both had any same-sex partner in their lifetime;
Only 64 pairs of identical male twins were found where only 1 of the pair had any same-sex partners;
And only 188 pairs of identical female twins were found where only 1 of the pair had any same-sex partners. (10)

Significantly, their data show a very low number of identical twin pairs who had both engaged in same-sex behaviors. The data also show a very low concordance rate (where both twins show the same trait) – less then 10% for the males and slightly over 12% for the females. Again, the study points to what we already know: there is a low concordance rate for homosexuality among identical twins, and the main factors in homosexuality are not genetic.

  • The genetics don't make the person. Genetics are the frame work. We have to go beyond genetics and actually look at the person. All of the mystery is between the potential and the actual. More importantly does this mean there is not a genetic basis for homosexuality?? Is it a lifestyle choice like veganism?? Is it like smoking, once you start maybe you can't quit...all your friends are smokers...Hmmmm interesting.

  • That study is bogus. Identical twins can be one girl and one boy (though extremely rare). Studies show that gay men have similar brain patterns to straight women.

  • The study you are talking about compare a very small # of people.

    Their wrote as a conclusion that it is just a suggestion that need further studies.

    You write anything without even checking what you are writing and dissmiss whatever does not fit your preconceived agenda.

    8700 twins is quite a large sample.

  • The brains of the twins would develop after they split, which is why an identical twin girl has the brain of a girl, and an identical twin boy has the brain of a boy.

  • Not only does this website have an anti-gay agenda but there are so many flaws with this study that it is not credible at all, they are trying to confuse the real studies showing the complete opposite is true. Interesting to see what low tactics anti-gay activists will succumb to in order to preach their intolerance. Citizenlink is clearly an anti-gay website.

  • I have spoken to many priests, evangelical christian pastors all who have listened to peoples confessions and they have told me that a great number, more than half of the confessions they listen to, are about homosexual desires in both men and women congregants.

    There seems to be a lot more homosexual desire than any study can reveal.

  • Being Gay is perfectly normal. Anybody who thinks that being gay is not normal has an agenda, and they are the people responsible for a lot of needless suffering.

    It is because of these narrow minded fools who blindly follow their false gods that they impose their ideas on gay people. This has led to many suicides.

    These haters do not deserve to be on this planet and living among the rest of us who live and let live. Keep your noses out of other people's bedrooms. Take the log out of your own eye.

    What, I am supposed to take your anti gay propaganda with a smile and cheer you on? There is a big difference between being hateful and being firm and standing up to ignorance.

    I believe that your anti gay agenda is hateful and misleading in the way you assert your facts and distort things to suit your world view. Perhaps we all do this to a certain extent, but there is a point where one must quit being a doormat. Frankly I am very tired of people saying that because their god tells them that other people are not normal or evil or sinful, they go on the war path against those same people. This is what causes suffering. Those very same feelings that caused you to say that my speech is hateful, is a small part of the terror anti gay people instill in the minds of many vulnerable gay people.

    I am not terrorized one bit by anything you say that is anti gay, but I respond on the offensive because of my more vulnerable brothers and sisters who are LGBT.

    God loves LGBT the same as anyone else, and left to your ideology, they are not and are scorned and hated because of those beliefs and because of who they are.

    Spreading confusion and causing people to doubt their authenticity and their reality is a hateful act, and yes it is a two way street.

    Can you honestly tell me what your motivation is to continually post anti gay news stories? I mean really be honest and tell it like it is instead of sugar coating it by hiding behind phony studies funded by right wing think tanks and religious politically motivated organizations?

    I have told you what my motivation is. I am protecting my community from those who would seek to destroy it or hurt it with psychological tactics designed to cause them fear and self doubt.
