Arch rivals gather near the Arc de Triomphe and share a stage in honor of France's Bastille Day celebrations. France marks the 219th year since the people, tired of oppression and the corrupt aristocracy, stormed the prison to release political prisoners and arm themselves in revolt.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and many others joined President Sarkozy in celebration of France's nation event. France has been making a concerted effort in the struggle for peace in the Middle East and this display suggest at least a modicum of progress.
