There are some people who believe that because Milford police are cracking down on loud vehicle exhausts, we are losing a basic right. To do what? Annoy others?
There is no inherent right to make noise, there is no inherent right to disturb people.
A reader asked if one day there might be a prohibition on loud music. There already is. It’s called “disturbing the peace.”

These comments here are not mine but from a colleague. I thought it is a good follow up.
Peter beginning comments:
And as for lawn mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers? No one is suggesting that such things should be banned.
The gas-powered models should be banned. The electric variety should only be allowed during strict hours. The city I previously lived in did not allow any kind of lawn equipment, construction, etc except from 8am-6pm M-Sat. Not to say that people did not still violate that law flagrantly.
My current city allows lawn work and other domestic power tools until 10pm at night. Why does any one need to be mowing their lawn or working with any power tools until 10pm at night? Boggles the mind who writes these codes and what they're thinking.
I would suggest only electric lawn tools Monday through Saturday from 9am to 6pm and no holidays.
Also you know what would be even better if lawn work was only allowed on one or two days a week per neighborhood. That way everyone can do their lawn at once and get that out of the way so we can have some quiet days in between!
Living in Florida, especially when it starts to rain a lot - the lawn work equipment noise is a constant loud roar every single day!
Milford Police Chief Fred Douglas has said that vehicle noise is a quality
of life issue and he's absolutely right. No one is interfering with anyone's
right to ride a motorcycle or drive a car or listen to music.
But the police should interfere with disturbance and noise.

It's like what is in the handbook for my residence hall: "The right to silence will supersede the right to make noise."

Thanks "Ulvpter!" Some people thinks I am over reacting in regards to noise but we are in times to understand that we crossed the lines and society, machines, transportation and appliances got louder beyond limits. The most important thing to know is that noise is an invasive energy. The second is to try to develop better machines and allocated technology to help our daily lives without inflicting in the living spaces of others. These are all possible issues. But it does require our education, care and responsibility towards ourselves and others in our Communities.

NOISE POLLUTION IS HUGE... important topic!
-
If local municipalities made the legislative changes at the local and state levels, manufacturers will have no choice but to develop models of their products that conform to stricter noise ordinances. I have already seen many machines going the low noise route.
For example, my appliances; washer and dryer, they are low noise, you barely here anything out of them unless they are overloaded or have sneakers washing and drying in them; all that tumbling noise.
I have a lawn mower that has a quiet engine, much quieter than my old one; even the packaging on the box said that the machine was quieter. Also it makes sense to use electrical garden tools in city limits. How many times have you been woken up by somebodies lawnmower in the early morning when you wanted to sleep in?
I know this has happened to me dozens of times.
I agree that making excessive noise is not a right, but saying that making noise, period, is not a right is wrong. Free speech gives us the right to make noise with our mouths. We can never infringe on the rights of people to speak; now screaming and shouting, that is another matter.
No one has the right to scream and shout at anyone. -
I read the article and was surprised that it ended up discussing 'illegal' immigration. WTF?!?
Okay, maybe we should cut grass unless the sun is up.
Fine, cars shouldn't be modified to make excessive amounts of noise.
But the article goes outside of its realm when it starts discussing the changing American identity as a result of immigration.-

Now, I have one for you. Have you ever gone camping and it is in the evening and camp fires are going, kids are being tucked in? When loud music starts blaring over the whole camp ground followed by whoops and hollers. I've been places where even gun shots have been fired. And if you ever try talking to some of these people, they would swear that it is their God given right to do what ever they please. I'm grateful to those forestry service workers that will stood up to these people for the sake of the other campers. Whew, okay, I think I have got that one off my chest...anyway..No one person has the right to rob anothers peace.

I live in Alaska. We have a lot of cars, and other vehicles that quite frankly, have no exhaust. They make a lot of noise, but if we were to try and crack down on them, well we would have just about nothing left to drive.
But the hole thing with wild parties I could do without. Not don't get me wrong I like to blare the stereo myself sometimes.
And I also like some loudness to some vehicles Because I like to know if they are running. I hate it when I go to get in the truck and my dad starts to drive with the door half open, and me half way in the truck.-

Thanks for your comment! I did not know that. I think we found another source of global warming then. That explains why the ice is melting faster over there. I am wondering about the mortality rate on carbon monoxide in Alaska now?
