Bigdog_mike, the melting ice-caps are flowing into the polluted and salty sea - problem compounded, not solved.

Why don't we have a reliable way to convert sea water into drinking water? Or for that matter, why haven't we suficiently mastered science to creat water from other molecules? I remember my chem 104 class telling us that one of the chemical reactions in the human body produces water as a byproduct - why aren't we researching that?
It seems to me that a planet that is mostly water should know how to properly use that water... -
We need people to wake up to conservation. http://water-is-life.blogspot.com

We think a shortage of oil is going to be a problem. Wait for the water wars. We need water far more than we will ever need oil.

I second the call for conservation. I get so irritated driving home every day to see my neighbors sprinkler flooding the street. I nag my boyfriend to stop running the water while he shaves. Fill up the sink instead! We can all do little things in our every day lives that can make a huge difference. If only more people cared.

Desalination is prevalent in richer Middle Eastern countries (Saudi Arabia accounts for a quarter of the world's desalinated water) but it's almost nonexistent in where it's needed in Africa and Asia. Desalination consumes massive amounts of energy, land, and requires extreme maintainence. We need to start perfecting the technology before it's too late.

If the world ever seriously starts using hydrogen vehicles, there could be some unforseen changes in the atmosphere; the release of mass amounts of water vapor into the air could have some detremental effects i.e. warming or cooling.
We should be bottling the vapor right from the exhaust pipe and selling it! -
Maybe if we stopped poisoning our drinking water with fluoride we would have a high enough IQ to think about a solution!

It's sad to see our world dying.... but its sadder to see people not caring or not knowing.

I think conservation is very important. We need to learn how to reclaim gray water. There are so many ways to save fresh water by doing simple steps to re-use this water.
We also need to have a massive re-making of our water infrastructure. Many of our cities have water utilities that are a hundred years old. Leaky pipes in these old systems waste tons of water every day. -
Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink...

Sigh....As my good pal Bender would say... we're officially boned....

Purification of saline through reverse osmosis is a very simple process and the Saudi's have been extracting and purifying water using this method on an industrial scale for over a decade.
We should be investing in desalination technology now and not waiting until any "shortage" crisis becomes global.-
