An Australian man has been banned from buying or even holding a beer for 12 months after his seventh drink driving offence, when it was found that he was spending more than A$1,000 on beer a week (about £487), enough to buy 2,500 small bottles of his favoured drink - Melborne Bitter. The juge decided against a jail term after it became clear that the man had started drinking since a traumatic break-up and had stopped drinking since his latest offence.
