Deadly attack on US base sends worrying signal for commanders hunting Taliban and al-Qaida

An insurgent raid that penetrated an American outpost in eastern Afghanistan, killing nine soldiers, has deepened doubts about the U.S. military's effort to contain Islamic militants and keep locals on its side.

Moving in darkness before dawn Sunday, some 200 fighters surrounded the newly built base in a remote area near the Pakistan border without being spotted by the troops inside, said Gen. Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh, the provincial police chief.

The result was the deadliest incident for U.S. forces in Afghanistan since June 2005, when 16 American soldiers were killed as a rocket-propelled grenade shot down their helicopter.

  • Pay ATTENTION people this war is getting bigger

  • Going into Afghanistan was a big mistake, and it was sold on lies, just as it was with going into Iraq. Afghanistan is unconquerable, it always has been so since Alexander the Great who didn't exactly conquer it, he negotiated with it and married Roxanne, an Afghan princess from Bakhtia (Paktia today).

  • In war there are casualties.

I'm surprised the total number is so small for the amount of troops sent, and length of current war in Iraq.

    I agree sadly with reconmom...

  • It's sad that we've dug in, creating "strategic outposts". If it took this long to build one, then it really wasn't "strategic" which tells us we're not seeing the big picture and we're playing along as long as 43 is in power.
  • Thank them for their services to the United States, regardless of how you feel about the conflict. Soldiers have one job, do the job that is asked of them.
    No complaints, just completion.

God bless them and their families.

  • The Iraq war was sold on lies. The Afghanistan war was NOT sold on lies. Osama bin Laden was actually living there under Taliban protection.

    Any more questions?

  • Going into Afghanistan was not necessarily a mistake. The justification was sound; it’s just that we didn’t stick to our plan. Instead of hunting down Osama bin Laden we engaged in a nation building campaign.

So long as the US military involves itself in Arab affairs Al-Qaeda will exist. That’s because Al-Qaeda opposes US intervention! Bin Laden did not wage a war because of cultural or ideological differences, he did it because the US was in the middle east period.

By the way those are British soldiers in the picture above.

  • you can't drop Napalm in a desert , and you can't expect to fly over the place dropping bombs and hoping they'll "come to the table" - they won't - and so long as they won't there will be casualties . they already live in the "stone age" over there , and you're just going to have to kill them the old fashioned way , and pray that your supporters now will stay interested in you . ( to Obama )

  • Bush and Obama are fools as were the Russians. It's horrible so many are dieing for such unclear reasons. If a Viet Nan style body count is the measure of winning then everyone is losing. Everybody always has god on their side. Does anyone know why we are fighting in Afghanistan, really? Chaney will not tell you and dead soldiers never try. American foreign policy kills so many in so many places its a wonder we even pay any attention to Afghanistan. I guess we do not unless a few of our troops are killed. Do you have any idea how many Afghanistan citizens had been killed by someone?

  • Iraq was probably a way to get our minds off of the failure in Afghanistan... but if they'd put all their efforts there instead of spreading our military thin, maybe we could have won one war. Now we're losing two wars and trying to start a third and destroying our economy at the same time. Sad times.

  • I have two relatives who survived Vietnam...barely. One was shellshocked so badly he cut off all ties with us and the other became an alcoholic because he couldn't deal with the memories of the war. He wandered the streets until my grandmother took him in again. It was all she could do.

I wonder what will become of our men, our soldiers, who have been marked by this pointless war. And what will become of them?

Does anyone know what we are even fighting for?

  • ABSOULTE HERO'S in my book.

HE/She puts the greater good before themselves. I bet they are proud of their country. . . Too bad they will have to come home and some of you will be lined up at the airport to spit on them.

    God bless the brave ones

  • There has not been an attack on American soil since 9/11. The war has, at great cost, protected America, whether people want to admit that or not.

That's not under any idea that the war is fantastic, but the President's job is to protect America and that's what he did in a manner that is highly questionable to many people here and the world over.

They are so busy trying to kill the troops over there that they don't have time to plan or try another 9/11. Speculation, sure, but look at the facts...not a single attack here since and it is safe to say that if there was no reaction quickly as it was that there would have been more attacks and we could have been what Iraq is with the bombings and such.

You might be sympathetic to their plight over there but you don't want that over here and you, deep down, are happy that it's over there instead of here threatening your family when they walk the streets or go to the store or out to eat or to a concert or a sporting event.

The troops are doing as they are told and they are brave and I highly respect them for their endurance and their perseverance in such a difficult and horrible time. War is horrible. Period.

But it's not bad to understand the thinking of who decided to go to war and one can state the negative of hate and oil but one also has to see what good has come about by it and even if you don't agree you surely are appreciating and enjoying the lack of death here by terrorist because they are busy with their own problems.

  • Very interseting indeed. Perhaps they need to look in the underground caves inwhich they are hiding equipment. Including laptops and Parts.

I have already REMOTE VIEWED. Obama is hiding in IRAN. He will moved pretty soon. Anyway, I know the US
SECRET SOCITES which for a EMPIRE,BUT I think this war is gone far enough. Time to bring the troops home.

    How about a reminder..

  • I think your remote viewer is out of sync - pretty sure Obama isn't in Iran. :-)
