Obama says New Yorker insulted Muslim Americans

CHICAGO (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday that the New Yorker magazine's satirical cover depicting him and his wife as flag-burning, fist-bumping radicals doesn't bother him but that it was an insult to Muslim Americans.

"You know, there are wonderful Muslim Americans all across the country who are doing wonderful things," the presidential candidate told CNN's Larry King. "And for this to be used as sort of an insult, or to raise suspicions about me, I think is unfortunate. And it's not what America's all about."

Obama blamed himself for not being forceful enough in challenging some of the rumors about him, including that he is Muslim. Obama is Christian.

The son of a Kenyan father, Obama lived in the largely Muslim nation of Indonesia as a child. He dealt with similar questions in February after a photo surfaced of him wearing traditional Kenyan clothing during a visit to Africa in 2006.

The cover of the magazine, which hit newsstands Monday, depicts Obama in traditional Muslim clothing — sandals, robe and turban — while his wife, Michelle, has an assault rifle slung over one shoulder and is dressed in camouflage and combat boots with her hair in an Afro. A flag burns in a fireplace behind them as they bump fists, and a portrait of Osama bin Laden hangs above the mantel.

New Yorker Editor David Remnick told the Huffington Post Web site the cover was chosen because it had something to say.

When first asked about it on Sunday, Obama declined comment. His spokesman, Bill Burton, said it was "tasteless and offensive."

Obama said he's developed "a pretty thick skin" running for president and has "seen and heard worse."

"I do think that, you know, in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead," he said. "But, you know, that was their editorial judgment. And as I said, ultimately, it's a cartoon, it's not where the American people are spending a lot of their time thinking about."

  • Exactly how you'd expect a leader to respond to something like this. Well...maybe not after the last seven years.

  • I love how he says "it's a cartoon, it's not where the American people are spending a lot of their time thinking about"- but that's obviously not true!

  • "judgement to lead" nothing but taglines and nice phrases.

There is no substance. In my line of work you can talk all the bullshit you want but if your actions do not back it up. . . it's all crap.

This guy is all crap, but he sure can sway the weakminded with his speeches.

he should have been a faith healer, he could make a lot of money on the benny Hinn circuit.

    God bless america

  • Obama hit the nail on the head when he said, "I do think that, you know, in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead."

Irresponsible choice of cover on the part of The New Yorker. Someone let me know when a blackface cover hits newsstands.

  • It was only the New Yorker. No big deal. It's not as if it were on the front page of the New York Times or Washington Post. Plus, it was only a cartoon. Cartoons are supposed to be fake and funny.

The New Yorker + Obama Cartoon = No Big Deal

The satire, while received poorly, was apt and seems not to have personally offended Obama. What's unfortunate is that the cover might be perceived as further legitimization of the false rumors surrounding the candidate. A lot of people just don't understand satire.

  • I think the idea that cartoons are childish and shouldn't be taken seriously is off. Not all cartoons are meant to be "fake and funny".

  • It might be worth considering what the all of the buzz surrounding this cartoon has done for the public discourse...

There are clearly Americans whose perceptions of Obama have been skewed by lies perpetuated about his "Muslim upbringing" or by the language employed by the likes of Fox News describing Michelle Obama's "Terrorist Fist-jab".

These gross misrepresentations and distortions have been festering beneath the surface.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Obama campaign's response to this satirical cartoon might even be a calculated effort to bring these subcutaneous misrepresentations out into the open where they'll be publicly ridiculed and dismissed en masse.

  • Didnt they insult all Americans with that type of satire now i must wonder where is his focus

  • they did not insult anyone, but they did abuse of a crazy marketing strategy. maybe not 100% ethical, but come on, its the new yorker. do you expect us weekly not to talk about britney while showing horrendous pictures of her and her kids?

Obviously the New Yorker meant it as satire. Unfortunately, it completely missed the mark and ended up harming Obama's campaign. Obama's reply was well thought out and pretty much the best he could have done given the circumstances. Now I think it's time for the New Yorker to admit they fucked up and promise to read Swift before attempting any more bad satire.

  • It would be easier to understand it as satire if it was funny.

  • Oh, cry me a river. How about Obama talk about CLIMATE CHANGE and the urgency of what this planet faces at the hands of the special interests he allows to continue to pollute it instead of crying over a magazine cover now to fish for votes? Coal companies are blowing off mountain tops while he complains over a cartoon. If you plan on being a "politician" in this country you better have a thick skin... I am so tired of rhetoric like this being considered important in campaigns while truly important issues are pushed aside.

I have to count on a real leader to give a speech on energy policy and climate change tomorrow in Al Gore, because both Obama and McCain have failed miserably on that score. So just for his information, the Arctic may be ICE FREE this summer with less refreeze (does he truly understand what that means or does a speech writer have to tell him?) and other ice around the world is melting at an acccelerated rate in winter... there are harbingers here that will affect our very ability to survive in the future and all he cares about is a damned cartoon on a magazine... oh and yes of course, continuing this war for the military industrial complex regardless of where it is.

And of course, this will make TV because Current just has to plaster Obama's face all over this site everyday about something to make 'him' look good. However, climate change, corporate control of our resources, the death of our Democracy which he enabled along with all of Congress, and other truly important issues hardly ever see TV here because people would rather see this. No wonder this country is going to hell in a handbasket. If nothing else this cover proves one thing: The public is still a slave to what the media does... even here.

  • I think the New Yorker cover was meant to poke fun at the ignorant rumors about the Obama's. People didn't get it. It wasn't really funny in that it included the Muslim attire. It isn't really acceptable to make fun of any religion. So get over it. Let's focus on the real issues. Obama has a better idea. Let's compare Obama and McCain on the issues and stop with the stupidity.
  • get some cheese for whine for Obama..LOL...also for negrets remark... UH whos on thier knees all the time s--g D--k??? as you say about whites.. better look around thats how your race has to spport the kids you black guys wont support..

  • Funny, the more you all talk about it the more it WILL be thought about, which is just fine with me, I think there are some real issues with where Obama leans, way too many to have him as President, especially with a bunch of Democrat hacks in the other branches.

  • Obama may actually think he is GOD, thats the scary part..

  • This is just the usual response from liberals, a huge outcry when someone dares to be critical of someone on their side. How many times every week is the president or conservative politicians depicted in embarassing and sometimes ridiculous cartoons? The answer is that this happens quite often, but because of they are the "enemy" of all liberal press its fine to do so and not at all offensive. This is a double standard and Obama needs to learn to take it like a man, the New Yorker like all other press are allowed to do anything they want, so just suck it up and join the club that republicans have been in for a long time. Oh and don't even play the religion card, "its not alright to make fun of a religion." That is ridiculous, it happens all the time, if it were geared towards Christianity instead, I'm sure it would be fine. This was satire and Obama and his wife just need to accept the fact that they are running for public office and this will happen, they need to stop their complaining about how "unfair" everyone is being, they're like 5 year olds who can't handle the real world.

  • Whats worse is the Obama supporters that are outraged, how dare anyone make fun of their deity.
    Tgarius
  • No, Obama is not God, nor does he think he is God. But, unlike McCain he knows what countries we are fighting in and who lives there. Obama can name them correctly even without Liberman there to tell him. The New Yorker cartoon was in poor taste, and missed the mark. No one cares. I notice that Liberals can disagree without insults.

  • What exactly did the cover "have to say?" Did the editor every specify that? Or did it remain an abstract cop out?

  • Knucks, yea.. I think we should just keep looking at it...

  • at least a mainstream politician is showing some sort of concern for Muslim Americans.

  • Check out Jon Stewart's 100% right-on-the-money response.

Look, anyone who is outraged by this cartoon just doesn't understand satire. Satire is NOT polite, nor has it EVER been polite. And satyrs have been mocking politicians (which is not what's going on here, by the way) and the portrayal of politicians (which is) for all of recorded history. Don't just read Swift, read Aristophanes, Rabelais, Cervantes, Voltaire, Moliere, Twain - watch Kubrick and South Park, Stewart and Colbert. None of that stuff is polite, it is wild, filthy, unruly, raunchy and hilarious.

  • Yes, I agree keeshii. . . But in answering a direct question about a controversial magazine cover when many are curious about his response . . . Obama should have said "Sorry, can't discuss this, we're in debt, the polar ice caps are melting, trillions of our dollars are going out of the country for gas, our health care system is in shambles and we have to end this war."

Ridiculous to go there on this thread. Even when defending himself on something he had nothing to do with we twist and turn and rant and rave? It's about the appropriateness of a magazine cover for Gods' sake. And how many of us posting here have even read the article behind this cover? I know I haven't.

  • On MSNBC last night The New Yorker's editor said the picture was put on the cover to point out all of the absurdities of the rumors about Obama and his wife as satire. Offended or not, whether it will backfire or not, that was the intent.

  • I thought the cartoon was funny, exspecially the gun wielding terrorist giving Osama knuckles. We all know he isn't a Muslim, but the fact that he says it will offend Muslims, his unsupport for Israel and sympathy for the islamic terrorist, and his willingness to have 'tea' with Ahmedinejad only show he is one step away from giving the terrorists knuckles.
    Kylsport
  • Chique, isn't he basically saying just that when he says;

"I do think that, you know, in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead," he said. "But, you know, that was their editorial judgment. And as I said, ultimately, it's a cartoon, it's not where the American people are spending a lot of their time thinking about."

Seems like he'saying Americans have more important things to think about. I think he's right.
