History of Palestine in Maps.

I hope this gives an historical and geopolitical perspective and puts the situation in context. The Arabs and Islam are the oppressors when discussing the problems of the middle east. The tiny nation of Israel just REFUSES to be oppressed any longer by these hostile nations all around them. Israel liberates themselves from 1500 years of Islamic oppression and suddenly they are the oppressors?!!! Man, you got it twisted.... Have you ever taken a look at the map of the middle east? Israel is definitely not the oppressor...

  • Thanks for posting this I was looking for it.
I see pain on all sides but this shows how little land the Jews have. I still feel sad that some Palestinians suffer who didn't ask for any problems personally but this surely makes one have some pity for Israel..no?
  • Thanks CarolynGillis... I was beginning to think everyone on Current was a raving anti-semite. Have you seen some of these people's posts? I'll be adding more soon... BTW, in case you did not know, and these are facts; the Palestinians could have had their own state in 1948, instead they chose to "drive the Jews into the sea" and waged war along with 5 other Arab armies. Up until 1967 the so-called "occupied territories we controlled by Egypt and Jordan." Where was the cry of occupation and an independent Palestinian state then? If you really dig into it and don't get washed by all the anti-Israel brainwashing that's going on around you will find some eye opening facts!
I am posting a link to a number of palestinian TV shows... Ask yourself, how can there be peace when this is going on?

  • I happen to have Jewish heritage so I might lean a little that way naturally. I try to keep an open mind. Seems like people on all sides are being used as pawns.
    This is bad stuff..evil hate.
How many Palestinians actually believe this though?
I see polls that say most want peace and a 2 state solution...every culture has it's nuts.
  • It is hip and cool these days to hate Israel for anything they do, and it stems from the fact that Israel is one of Americas most die hard supporters.

I see the gray area between the Israelis and the Palestinians and I hope for peace some day, but I will never, ever stoop so low as to cheer or support anything an evil leader like Ahmadinejad says or does, no matter how much he hates Bush, it doesn't redeem him for the evil he has done.

I really worry about the level of antisemitism in this country when every story about Israel has at least one person that leaves a "Serves the jews right" comment or "damn jews" Its sickening...

  • Yes sop killing each other is the first step the rest can be worked out. Killing will solve nothing. The world needs peace and cooperation bewteen all countries and all people it is the ultimate goal and hopefully some day it will be that way. There is enough for all people, greed is one of the worst enemies of world peace.

  • First, having disgust with the actions of the zionist movement IN NO WAY makes you anti-semitic and linking the two is really just awful. zionism is a system of government, judaism is a religious belief/culture.

second. yes the jewish people have had it tough, notably WW2. But guess what! so did the gypsies, gays, etc etc. where is their free homeland? Why do you think it's acceptable for the jewish people to literally steal the palestinians homes from them? On top of which, yes the arab nations attacked first, much the same as we would attack a nation that came in, divided a nation and gave half of it away without our consent. No I don't pity Israel, it's got a blank check from the most powerful militaristic nation the world has ever seen.

3rd. Israel has no interest in peace because to obtain peace they'd have to give back part of jerusalem, as it is also holy to the muslims, and stop encroaching on Palestinian territory. Haven't you noticed that the israelis refuse to talk to hamas even though it was voted in legally and fairly by the palestinian people? haven't you noticed that israel has been KILLING JOURNALISTS who are in no way in active war zones? they don't care about peace, they want to keep their settlements they've taken from the palestinian people and keep the palestinians pinned behind walls.

If Israel wants pity it should stop acting like a spoiled bully in the region. take a look at what life is like in gaza sometime and maybe you'll get an idea of why i'm so dang pissed off about this.

  • oh and. for fun, compare england sometime to the size of all the lands it once fought or dominate (the empire). size doesn't matter (nor apparently, does goodness). ferocity and technological superiority in warfare do.

  • If you think Israel is not an 'oppressor' you either don't know what the word 'oppressor' means or you are out of touch with reality.

That's like saying the US was not an oppressor of Native Americans.

It's a great thing for Jews to finally have their own country. The only problem is that there were already people occupying the land the Zionists chose.

1500 years of Islamic oppression does not mean Jews cannot themselves be oppressors today. During that 1500 years, the Islamic world was more powerful. In the present, that power has shifted to the west. Israel is backed economically and militarily by the US, a goddamn super power. How are you gonna say they are not oppressors?

Palestine has clearly always been on the loosing side in this issue. >>>>Way more Palestinians have died than Israelis.

  • Pretty simply put...Israel stole land, kicked people out of their homes. GREED= WAR....a kind gesture to give back that land is the next step. a step to peace...America needed to give the Native Americans SOME land back with SOME independence since the colonists from Europe stole their land (among other horrible things). That gesture gave the Native Americans some dignity back. The same thing needs to be done there. furthermore, Jerusalem is HOLY to many other religions..NOT just Jews. Jews don't own it. period.

One more thing....the anti-semitic defense is of no use. Only to those that scream hate at the Jew for living...we have nothing against Jews and some of us ARE Jews and some of us are friends of or married to Jews. Yes, Caroline, Israel IS small, but if you put America into that, it becomes bigger than anything.

  • What does that mean if you put America in that?
That has no meaning to me. If you put America in Palestine should be big also..doesn't make sense. If you take all of the Arab countries Palestine should be big.
  • In a case like this you cannot comment or think that you have an "informed" opinion on either side because both sides have their truth and both sides have their own bias. so you can quote bookmark or even have "valid" evidence to support either side depending on which side you like better.

A reminder that it can be done.

"Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without."

A reminder that it can be done...it won't be discovered telling a whole culture of lovely people to f@@@ off, you are evil ..Palestinian or Jewish. Same for both of their govts. They might be 75% bad. They have to hold some element of their people. They might be 30% bad. I am not an expert and there is always bias.
Let's hear it for these strong young heroes who are fighting hate SUCCESSFULLY in their every day lives with this unique approach.

This will not get any attention because simple solutions do not get anywhere..we need to wallow in Testosterone I guess.

    Also great comment by stone
Thank you for that. I'll paste it in here:

I think if you search your own heart you will sympathize for either side.

An Israeli who has lost an innocent nephew to murder who was camping in the woods and loved nature, music and children

The other side I hear pain from their cries of dead family members who were caught in the border disputes.

All a great waste of life. There are better things to do.

  • Size doesnt matter.
Small nations can commit atrocities too.
  • You Jew Haters will find any justification to blame Israel.

  • "That's like saying the US was not an oppressor of Native Americans."

    NOT.

The American, both in the Colonies, the U.S. and Canada, systematic murder, rape, genocide and forced imprisonment and acculturation through federal boarding schools of American Indians is not at all what is going on in the Middle East.

A more accurate parallel is the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, which also had the component of interference by the U.S. federal government and energy and resource corporations.

The difference is the sheepherding Navajo (Dine) who believe in Nizhoni - beauty and balance - as a central tenet and the Hopi - The People of Peace, don't strap explosives to themselves and their children to fight for their land rights.

  • That is not a map of the Arab world. It is a map of the predominantly Muslim Middle East, and Israel. I appreciate your zeal Hip Hop, but that map distorts the truth. Plus, the most coveted piece of land is Palestine, Judea, Israel, Sumeria . . . however you want to put it. Also, speaking as a person of complete Jewish family origins, and speaking in America, it is quite possible to disagree with Israeli policies and to not be an anti-Semite. Sometimes people cross the line and they don't know it, but most intelligible people do not. I don't think any of these posts really do.
