CHICAGO - For decades the Rev. Jesse Jackson has rallied against the use of the N-word — an ethnic slur he has repeatedly told the American public is hateful and degrading. But the longtime civil rights activist used the term in what Jackson thought was a private conversation during a break from a TV interview.

Jackson has already come under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama that were recorded during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.
In additional comments from that same conversation, obtained by the blog TVNewser and published Wednesday, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."
Fox News did not air the comments, taped for a July 6 show, but a spokesman confirmed TVNewser's account to The Associated Press.
Jackson — who was traveling in Spain to attend an interfaith conference on Wednesday — apologized in a statement for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.
"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public," Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."
A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.
For more than 100 years, the N-word has been used against blacks and is a potent symbol of racism. Last year, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held a symbolic funeral for the word, similar to one the civil rights organization held in 1944 for Jim Crow laws.
At the same time, blacks also use the term when referring to other blacks, a practice both Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton have fought. Both have called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios to put an end to its use.
They renewed their efforts in 2006 when actor Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club.
At the time, Jackson called on the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld," which starred Richards as the goofy friend Kramer.
Sharpton said Wednesday he wanted to hear the comments for himself and declined to discuss Jackson specifically.
"I am against the use of the n-word by anyone and I think we must be consistent," he told The Associated Press. "We must not use the word."

Im not an African American so i dont know how the community feels about Jackson calling Obama a racial slur. But i do know that Jackson has been trying to get the N word out of Hip Hop and the African American community.
My favorite line from Sharpton "We must not use the word." -
Don't think it, don't use it! Your life will be much better. You will be free, then to speak your mind regarding any injustice in this World.
-
now this doesnt surprise me.... hey current why dont you come down on jessie or is it ok for THEM to use the N word... of course it is.. what a screwed up system this is
-
anyway good job jessie .couldnt have said it better myself oooops,, but wait we arent allowed to.. BUT we sure DO think it... and you cant stop that...not with all but we do with thise who are racist against us.. you will never stop it..
-
Calm down there unicorn, you're a little too amped up about this.
Personally, I completely agree with Jesse. No one should use the word. It has no purpose besides degrading an entire race of people. There is no reclaiming or redefining it. The fact that it's used so commonly among blacks and whites, whether derogatory or not, is atrocious.
Although I find it pretty funny that the guy used the word himself, pretty hypocritical. Makes me wonder if he really believes in what he's saying. It could have just been an honest slip, but in any case it totally undermines his credibility. -
Just another washed up former leader way past his prime. Hang it up, buddy, you're embarrassing yourself.
-
my advice to jesse jackson just don't say nothing else and don't go on fox news no more because they left him out to dry
-
If the Obama campaign has taught you anything, you should know it's OK for blacks to be racist by now.
-
wow.... hes not the only one.... i dont know how many times i would see black peple would throw that word around with each other but when sm1 else calls that that... u get the sterotypical slightly aggresive response with the accusation of you being a racist... that pisses me off...
i realize that there is no way in hell that this is the majority, merely stating that jesse isnt the only one... -
and im really rooting for Obama to be a president b/c of the fact that he is in fact Black..... there are a number of people (arican americans) that say that white ppl are screwing them over.. and these ppl are generally from the urbanized "ghettoe" but with a black president in control... i dare say that these thoughts should be dissipated...
-
Thats why he doesnt want Obama to win, becuase if an african american become president than he wont be pandered too by his white counterparts who he claims hate him.
Trust me Jackson doesnt want his gravyboat take away from him. Especially by another African American -
kewal91 let me school you on this issue when some blacks called each other nigga that's taking the sting out of the word now when a white person or anybody else called a black person a nigger and in a negative manner like michael richards and dog the bounty hunter that's a problem and kewal91 white people have always and still screwing over blacks
-
me i don't care about jesse jackson
-
kewal what planet are you talking about??? saing if obama were elected racism would stop???? wow you have no dea what can happen...it will be a disaster from what i am hearing..watch your news,,its starting aready

Making something out of nothing....
The long and short of it..
Whites used to openly call blacks the N-word as humiliation.
Blacks(especially males) later took the word and made it a badge of courage..
Later the word is falling out of use due to lack of meaning..
Jesse Jackson is a remnant of the past and not a really big player..Most blacks aren't offended by him saying the N-word it's just a bit archaic(spelling) and outdated
No one makes a big deal when Jamie Foxworthy uses the word "redneck " or when George Lopez or Mr. Mencina uses the word "wetback..." or when female comics(any race) use the 'B-word..." or when obese people make "fat" jokes. It's generally acceptable to talk about yourself but when you talk about others it's a problem..
Jesse is a remnant of the past and shouldn't be taken too seriously in that regard..
Iraq and the economy is the principle thoughts on most peoples minds these days..
Peace And Blessings to All... -
I can't use that word. Other people do. I think that if it's on a personal level with someone else it's understandable why it would be used, but publicly or in public is just a big fat NO.
-
The word is wrong and should be avoided. So should any word that insults a race. That being said, if people happen to use insulting racial words, who cares, they just show their ignorance and one should take note of that, nothing more. Take Imus for example, in my opinion he should not have been fired. People should have just had the common sense to stop listening to him. That's how he should disappear. Firing Imus did nothing but give him a bigger platform and greater publicity. We as a country should have just turned him off. I think our society takes to much offense and over reacts when it comes to words. So lets just look at Jackson for who he is, a foul mouthed person who insults. I turned him off years ago.

Je$$e Jack$on is part of the limosine riding, liberal dummycrat, socialist society, elites... that belong to the same country club as obama and al sharpton!
obama called for Imus to be fired, for saying
nappy-headed hoes.
They all play the race or hate card when it suits them!
And they never speak bad of one another in public!
But Jack$on didnt think he was being recorded and that tells me what he really thinks.

Did he say nigga or nigger?
I think there is a difference.
When people say "the N word" do they mean one or the other or both?
booboo - EVERYONE in politics plays the race card when it suits them. -
As an African American I can say this without any other person's permission. Jesse made the comment in a "private" conversation! In my private conversations I have used the word and even used the "h" word or "o" word describing whites and asians in private.
My mother is a white woman, who used the word all the time when I was growing up. This fact was brought to my attention during a dinner party where african american friend observed my mother's usage too freely. When I addressed his concern with my mother, her answer spoke volumes regarding her right to say the "n" word.
"I gave birth to 5 black babies for your father (an african american) so if I choose to use that word tell your friend to mind his business!"
My mother and me have not had a good relationship since that time. White people should not say the word in public arenas, however in the privacy of their homes they can shout it from every room, In public most ethical blacks don't use the "n" word, but in private conversations they can. The key word to this question is PRIVATE!!! -
So let me see if I got dis straight!
if you a Nigg@& you can say Nigg@&
ifin you aunt ya cant less its private
ifin ya white ya just betta not let a Nigg@& hea it!
do i gots it?
DAMN!

Mr. Richards went to a comedy club in LA and used the N-word as humiliation to a heckler. He was lucky he was around Blacks who had their temper in control.
Don Imus used a public radio program to insult the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team..
Both of them were DEAD WRONG... Mr. Richards was deliberate and Mr. Imus was more out of ignorance.
It's really weird that some people have the nerve to tell others how to talk in private. Republicans are supposed to be for less government intervention. Why are many of them worried about this issue. Lets focus on Obama's & McCain's track record on civil rights...
If two Blacks address each other with "what's up my N-word" who cares.
If two Latinos joking address each other as a "wetback..."who cares.
If two White people are arguing and one calls the other a "redneck" who cares.
I personally don't use these words but if the two persons using them don't mind who am I to correct them about a private conversation.
Jesse Jackson talks too much and his hey-day and contributions are behind us.
Does anybody know how the US gets out of Iraq sooner than 100 years? and How will the economy be fixed.
Peace and Blessings To All -
Hey Jerball,
No one's calling for an wire tap on private conversation...its just typical liberal dummycrats hypocracy when a civil-rights leader dont wont whitey to say "N" but uses it himself, and has made millions.. off of whitey preaching it!
You only get 1 stupid question per day!
100 years in Iraq is a platitude...look it up!
