  • That's such an awesome picture! He looks like he's having a whale of a time.

Although, I bet he's one of the lucky ones who it doesn't affect that badly.

  • The reason that this is even a story is that 99% of the people who did what he did would have died in their 60s

Lucky is the word to describe this: no-one says that smoking and drinking are 100% going to kill you, but on average etc......

  • while he is the exception to the rule, in japan they smoke like chimneys and they have one of the highest life expectancy rates on the planet. Your life is a balance, smoking isn't necessarily going to kill you if you are otherwise healthy (as proven by this and others). most people who smoke in the US also tend to live unhealthy lifestyles and that tag team of bodily harm is what leads to their quick demise, stop blaming little sticks of tobacco for goodness sakes

  • Hey, Anti-Smoking lobby! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. That guy is awesome.
  • Good for him; looks like he is having a hell of a time! And no, of course, he should not be a role model for smoking, but at least he is enjoying his life to the max.

  • He has "three stooges syndrome" like Mr. Burns... Since he's drinking and smoking so much, neither can overtake him.
  • this man is a god .

  • This man wins.

"I don't feel my age. I've still the mind of a young man. But if I had the company of a good woman, I'm sure I'd feel 40 years younger in a flash."

edit: so that would mean he'd feel 60?

  • I'd have to go with good genes. jh, this man not developing emphysema does not prove that being healthy (other than smoking) keeps you from getting sick. It does however, point to genetic susceptibilities to carcinogens in cancer smoke. My grandmother lived a healthy lifestyle (never overweight, rarely drank, plenty of exercise, good diet) yet she developed COPD after smoking her whole life. What's the difference? Most likely genetics.

a hospital here in Texas is currently doing a study trying to determine which, if any, genes play a role in the development of respiratory ailments due to tobacco.

  • my great grandmother lived till 91 smoking a pack aday and drinking rye till the end. After her stroke she could only use one arm. So she sat next to a candle to light her smokes. She was the shit. I should have hooked those crazy old folks together.

  • If or when I turn 100, this is how I'm going to celebrate. A stogie in one hand, booze in the other. I would have also have had a hooker in my lap, but I'm sure that my hip would break.

  • I'm going to start smoking ten blunts per day and see where that gets me.

  • Some people are more lucky than others.

My dad smoked two packs of cigarettes a day his entire life and lived to be 91, not even dying from something (directly) linked to polluting his body with so much toxic smoke.

God knows I've put enough dangerous things in my body to make your head spin, but it all comes down to luck.

This is just one lucky old bastard. I'm sure if you look at the statistics, a couple hundred probably die for every one that lives, so don't get too excited and start modeling your life after him unless you want to die at 60 pissed off you weren't one of the lucky ones.

The bottom line, it's pleasure versus consequence with a whole bunch of variables thrown in.

  • I knew an amazing lady who lived to 109, smoked one cigar a day and drank a couple of vodkas every day. She did all her own shopping and housework. When she reached the age of 90, and seeing that "God doesn't want me back yet" as she was wont to say, she thought good and hard about what to do with her life. She remembered that when she was young, she wanted to study archeology and egyptology, but her father forbade her to go to university. So, she decided to go to the university here in Geneva, passed the tests, and studied archeology and egyptology with great success. Every year, she would go to Delphi "to consult the oracle" as she would say, and every summer she would go to Egypt to participate in archeological digs.

That's how I intend to grow old. :)

  • What keep him alive could be a very good cocktail of good genes, a wonderful diet, and a very cool attitude.

He seems very happy and you can tell by the picture that he have many more years to enjoy cigars and whisky.
