The United States should be making all of its electricity with renewable and carbon-free energy in 10 years, former Vice President Al Gore said Thursday.
"The survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk," Gore said.
In a speech at Washington's Constitution Hall, Gore touched on an array of the nation's current woes, saying the economic, environmental and national security crises are all related.
"I don't remember a time in our country when so many things seemed to be going so wrong simultaneously," Gore said.
To begin to fix all the problems, Gore said, "the answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels."
Gore called on the country to produce all of its electricity from renewable and carbon-free sources in 10 years, a goal he compared to President Kennedy's challenge for the country to put a man on the moon in the 1960s.
Gore chastised those who have proposed opening new areas for oil drilling as a solution to U.S. energy problems.
"It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for more oil 10 years from now," Gore said.
New demand from places like China means oil supplies won't be able to meet increasing demand, Gore said.
"The way to bring gas prices down is to end our dependence on oil and use the renewable sources that can give us the equivalent of $1 a gallon gasoline," the former vice president and Nobel laureate said.

The political response will be the answer to this challenge. We all have to contact our senators and representatives. Let them know that they are still public servants whether they think so or not. If they pass the the laws the big energy companies will have to get on board. Focus and vote!

I imagine that some people and media will bash this because they don't like the messenger. But if you read or watch the speech, it makes a lot of sense.
-
Al Gore's challenge makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, mainstream media spins for the right, they will cover it briefly and go into; 'nothing to see here, move along' mode and most Americans will.
If they need to they will talk about fear issues until the majority forget what Al Gore said. Al Gore and WE need to keep the conversation going. Don't move along! Stand up! The world is more important than profit for oil companies.
New industry in America, sounds good! We need to keep the focus on alternative energy! America needs leadership and Al Gore appears to be willing to take on the challenge. Al Gore is going to be on various program in the coming week, we need to let the sponsors of the programs he appears on know 'we care'! They could profit from promoting clean energy! -
"To begin to fix all the problems, Gore said, "the answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels."
he still seems to be genetically incapable of saying "reduce" instead of "end"....
and @Conniepae, for you to say that "mainstream media spins for the right" is an incredible statement.
for each "Faux News" that exists, there are probably five or ten mass-media outlets that have a NON-right "slant" to their deliveries. Ever heard of that bastion of conservatism, "The New York Times" or maybe the LA Times? way right, eh? sure. name some conservative newspapers. and tv media? cnn? huh?
even here in Raleigh, NC, "home of the late Jesse Helms," the local paper is decidedly left-leaning and unabashed of it.
oh, well, keep repeating it.. maybe that will make it true some day... as someone once said...
ps... look at who's buying up land for solar electric farms.... soon you'll be ragging on "big business" for buying up the land and being in control of the supplies... just wanted to warn you so you could start spinning up your engines now... :)))))))))))))) -
Plusaf, if we develop and use more renewable energy sources, wouldn't you think that it will lead to the end of our addiction. I missed the part about shutting all power supplies off now. I did catch the part about a ten year goal.

Hello Plusaf,
I am not sure what country you live in but in the USA there is next to no liberal media!
It is the responsibility of each one of us to keep this speech and noncarbon based energy in the forefront.
Thankfully in CA our elected officials in Congress are voting towards the environment.
Negativity will keep us stuck, depressed, and not seeking solutions. Maybe we will fall short of a 2010 goal yet if we do not try what will become of our world? Should we wait for tsunami's, no glaciers, horrific fire storms? Not me.......-

$100,000 Challenge to Prove Us Wrong!
If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction, were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time and that substance is the same one that has done it before . . .CANNABIS HEMP! -
I think it's ridiculous that some media outlets are asking the question, "Is Al Gore even relevant?"!!!
-
When Al Gore talks, folks should listen.
Why? Because he knows exactly what he's talking about. -
shemus, yes it's ridiculous for some media outlets to ask the question, 'Is Al Gore even relevant?". It's not by accident, it's a subliminal question, leading their viewers to think what he is saying may be irrelevant. It’s spinning, fact and relevance. Those same media outlets are the ones who have enabled this administration lead us down the path we are on. Not working out so well is it?

@jefftego... "Thats right. Even if Congress allows more offshore drilling and drilling in ANWR, we won't see a drop of oil for 10 years. By then global demand will be so high that it won't impact the price of oil in any significant way. Al Gore's challenge makes a lot of sense on various levels."
if your first comment is correct, then ten years from now, any oil we find and lift would have, according to the Peak Oil Theorists, EVEN MORE VALUE AND IMPACT on prices than they would TODAY!
supply would be LESS, demand would be HIGHER, and ANY addition to supply would have a larger impact ten years from now than today.
Eco 101. sorry.
swing again. -
Anybody got a price tag on Al Gore's plan? Want to venture a guess? Why is Al Gore still plugged into the grid? Put your money where your mouth is, sir!
