Hundreds of rich Americans whose names and secret foreign bank account information were turned over to US tax authorities could face criminal prosecution. A Senate committee is scheduled to convene tomorrow and among those called to testify are foreign bank account holders, including one of the wealthiest men in Los Angeles.
Are America's wealthiest citizens cheating the government out of billions?

48 year-old Peter Lowy and his family own the giant Westfield shopping center fortune and will control the retail space in the rebuilt World Trade Center in New York. Bob Bennett, a lawyer for Lowy, who is a prominent contributor to both Democratic and Republican candidates, told ABC News that Lowy's name was on the list of secret accounts from a Liechtenstein bank but that Lowy did nothing wrong.

Bennett said Lowy is out of the country tomorrow and will not be available to testify.

  • i wish i could conveniently be "out of the country" when the proverbial S#@& hits the fan...

  • Good. Those people stole from you and me.

  • Hey, I live really close to the Westfield malls.

I remember when that guy bought them all up, everyone here still calls them by their original name.

Regardless, if he broke the law, he deserves to be prosecuted.

I like how my friend puts it. The taxes they try to avoid is like pocket change to them. Greedy people...

What happened to the days when people who made money from nothing were called usurpers?

  • Probably won't go anywhere. We don't have an honest media. Without that I expect this will be swept under the rug and nothing will happen to anyone.
  • This been going on for a very long time.
    This is just a few.

  • WHAT A PACK OF RABID DOG COMMENTS.....you guys would have stonned and killed Jesus without a trial for god's sake. Before we enter into mob consciousness and get blood on our hands,....It is usefull to know that the majority of people with off shore bank accounts pay their full and lawfull share of income taxes on that money, or put "after tax" money off shore... all of which is completely legal......most do it simply to keep it from crashing with the failing US dollar and the crumbling US banking system.

The greatest money laundering haven is the good old IOUSA (the debt ridden US)...... ......most people with legal accounts in the banks of Europe are owners of legal offshore businesses, real estate, retirement plans....and were smart enough to see that our dollar...our banking system and our Federal reserve are in deep deep trouble, and want to avoid the bank closures that are continuing and will unfold more and more as this bubble called IOUSA breaks.

Of course there may be some bad apples, but this is not the reality of most offshore accounts, offshore businesses or offshore family trusts. Accounts can be established to house assets needed for international businesses and which pay their full share of taxes.....THIS IS ALL TOTALLY LEGAL.

"big so called busts" like this one with LGT bank of Lichtenstein have happened before, and when all investigations were said and done, little if any customers were guilty of illegal activity.

This is a big PR scare and intimidation tactic by our Government to discourage and prejudice the average person who isignorant of how this is a legal and just practice...to have an offshore account.... and as long as taxes are paid on all worldwide income for the US taxpayer we are legally allowed to have a bank account anywhere we like. People rich and not so rich do this legally.....lots of them....good, honest, hardworking people.

It is not just the rich....my boyfriend's grandparents have an apartment in Panama, because they could not afford to live on their fixed income in the US.....and they have their meager pension savings in a Swiss bank because they can not afford to loose their life savings to some greedy Wall Street banker who will later be indicted for fraud..or bailed out at the expense of the American people.....using loopholes created by the same Congress who is sabre rattling for a scapegoat to blame for the financial fall of the good ol' IOUSA.

You all are really biting this sabre rattling hook line and sinker........ it's our Federal Reserve and Congress who have nearly bankrupted America and bailed out those criminaly responsible for the housing crises, the falling dollar and the loss of millions of Americans homes and retirement.

t's easy to blame and crucify when you are ignorant of the facts and too angry and poor to get off your behind and learn something about the subject. This

  • I also hate ugly shopping mauls and realize that many rich have paved their way to the top by creating a mountain of charred ruins......but lets realize that the legality and freedom to have a bank account any where in the world exists....and all those who have one are not guilty of criminal activity as long as the US citizen pays taxes on all world wide income.....which in this police state ....no one would want to be found guilty of violating.

It is the fact that Congress wants to have us all believe it is criminal to have a lawfull foreign account, not that it is actually illegal. We sure live in a tweaked system.

  • Why isn't in a British bank if it is a legal? Their economy is on sound footing. Their banks are safe. Because is is hidden untaxed money.
  • Thank you ninja_tiger.

"Are America's wealthiest citizens cheating the government out of billions?"

If they are in fact guilty then the ego is of the opinion... If they are, who cares and good on them for the effort. Honestly, the only thing the government would have done with those tax dollars is waste them in Iraq and if not there than on some silly welfare program. That being said, the latter of the two would be much better than the other.

The id on the other hand.. If they are cheating the government out of tax dollars, then they should have the proverbial book thrown at them. If we have to reluctantly and forcibly pay taxes, then they too need to pay their share according to their income. Yes, the government is extremely wasteful with money but "noting is certain except death and taxes."

  • It is a little like a sharks in the bloody water mentality here. If this money that is supposedly hidden overseas is after tax money then they will again more than likely pay tax on it again once it is brought back into America. If it is pre-tax money, they will pay tax once it is brought into America, and believe me it will eventually make its way back to America. The tax laws are universally unfair, everyone will pay "Eventually", sometimes two or three times.

It is only upsetting the Government now because they don't have physical access to these taxes "now". They can cure this problem with "More Tax Cuts". The last one raised my income tax by 25%.

  • Sadly, here is what will happen. All these rich people will have their lawyers work overtime to cut a deal with the IRS so they only pay a fraction of the fines and penalties that have accrued. Of the estimated total of the 100 billion dollars owed to the government in taxes, the IRS will recover less than 15% and no one will go to jail.

I believe the only difference between some of these rich folks and poor folk, is that the rich can afford lawyers to do most of the dirty work. They're not the only ones who try to evade paying their share of taxes. The idea that the rich are somehow more corrupt than the average joe is a poor majority kind of mentality and I refuse to subscribe to it.

Now is it fair that many of them can buy their way out of a sticky situation? Hey, lifes not fair. Life doesn't deal out great hands to everyone. If you're gonna cheat, don't get caught and be prepared to pay the consequences. It's America. Get what you can get.
    Neghie
  • "Get what you can"? What a selfish and lonely mindset, I'm sorry you think that way.

I do agree that just because you're rich doesn't mean you're more corrupt than poor people, but I do have issues with the mentality of many people in industrialized nations, that being entitlement. Like we have some sort of right to live like proverbial kings while others starve around us.

  • says who? I don't think law and order works on these people! How can stand against their money?

  • The good, the bad ,and the ugly. I wonder do they wipe their butts with money. Use hundreds for coasters. Just because they got money dont make them bad, but haveing money to throw away and never had to work there whole lives with no chances of a real retirement, is gonna get them some dirty looks. There are still slaves. Corporate slaves, child underparented slaves, somebody gets a little management position and all of a sudden there the slave drivers of the nation. You propaganda specialist know good and well some people are systematically screw balled. You can be phony some other mission. Stop your tale telln fish stories.
  • More publicity will help.... Get them all!

  • These folks are gotting to have to take a big hit from the IRS becuase they probably have ties with the IRS. If you've got connections then you can get off, everyone knows that.

  • ninja tiger, well said. Also there is no law that requires us to pay income taxes. They're well within their rights. Enough of this threatening behavior from the IRS and govt. They need to be put to task.
  • I'm sure they'll get off... but hopefully something's done. Send them to jail.

But I'm sure the rich will protect the rich.

  • Clowns indeed brother. These people where heirs of a smart great great thats all, I bet. But showing off, being greedy, not careing about people, stumping on peoples toes, that already have had their personal information misused by there own state governments, and relatives working in these positions. Pretty much doomed and ignored young americans. Is gonna start some crap. But ridiculing them wont make a diffrence.
  • Could there be a relationship between the hedge fund investigation and the super rich...probably

  • Somehow, I feel that these people may buy their way out, or make some kind of arrangement to get off from prosecution. If you look at a lot of these scandals like some of the banks being defrauded by billions Eventually, those people involved got off. On top of that, these guys are well connected. A payoff here, a payoff there, and they're home free. What makes you think it would be any different?

  • ..do we really think something will come out of this..?

Its' their world - Protected by the same LAWS that are suppose to be applied to all...Only in America can these things happen-

The question is - How will it be covered?

If it was up to me to make the decision it would be handled like the Rev. Wright issue- Consistenly in our faces on all the networks and their subsidiaries - Entertainment Tonight; Inside Edition; Oprah; King; Today Show; and all of the night talk shows; sport stations- etc...
    Why Not?

    Is it just me?
  • no way will they be prosecuted
