Analysis of 28,000-year-old human DNA suggests that, while they may have co-existed with Neanderthals, "hybridisation" did not occur.

The 'Cro-Magnon' people were the first Homo Sapiens to colonise Europe, and lived between 45,000 and 10,000 years ago. The results showed that their DNA is a close match to modern Europeans, with no obvious Neanderthal influences.

Although this doesn't rule out the possibility that a few inter-species couples ... I'll stop there.

  • now THAT is racism... LOL....

  • Well, more acurately species-ism. I reckon the two groups probably just kept themselves to themselves, kindof like humans and chimps today, although they were much more alike than that.

  • Not really a surprise. With all the racism that exist I can't imagine how bad it would have been for a different species.

  • Ummm, I don't think the point is racism: SPECIES are not generally 'meant' to hybridise.

  • Yeah, it's less like an interracial couple and more like if you were to date a chimp.

This is interesting rwylie, I had seen an episode of The Naked Archaeologist talking about this and always wondered if our ancestors were tapping that Neanderthal ass.

  • Say no to Neanderthal Marriages! It's sinful and will ruin the sanctity of marriage as we know it!

  • This is quite interesting, but I am just wondering - what did humans look like at the time?

  • What a cro-magnon woman and baby (and man in background) may have looked like.

Apparantly they weren't that physically different from man today. Whereas that Neanderthal is.

  • Strange article. This info is about 10 years old. Many ancient sites suggest Neanderthals and early humans sometimes working together; mostly trading technologies, primarily early human tech to Neanderthals. It's proposed that Neanderthals didn't or couldn't adapt these new technologies as fast as early humans and subsequently perished.

  • Kind of destroys Jean Auel's entire story line.

  • 28,000 years is nothing in evolutionary terms: I would bet a lot that if we met a cro-magnon today we couldn't tell the difference.

Apart from all the grunting, spear throwing, and them cowering in fear at traffic, of course.
