Pope calls on religions to unite for Peace and against terrorism

Pope Benedict called for all religions to unite against terrorism and resolve conflicts peacefully on Friday and heard an Islamic leader urge Christians to overcome "misconceptions and prejudices" of Muslims.

"In a world threatened by sinister and indiscriminate forms of violence, the unified voice of religious people urges nations and communities to resolve conflict through peaceful means and with full regard for human dignity," Benedict told an inter-religious meeting.

The pope, in Australia for the Church's World Youth Day, also said the Catholic Church was open to learn from other religions, a comment seen in the context of moves to improve relations with other religions, particularly Islam.

"The Church eagerly seeks opportunities to listen to the spiritual experience of other religions," he said.

Catholic-Muslim relations nosedived in 2006 after Benedict delivered a lecture in Regensburg, Germany, that was taken by Muslims to imply that Islam was violent and irrational.

Muslims around the world protested and the pope sought to make amends when he visited Turkey's Blue Mosque and prayed towards Mecca with its Imam.

Sheikh Mohamadu Saleem, executive member of the Australian National Imams Council, told the pope:

"Muslims should become more inclusive and universal in their understanding of their religions. At the same time, significant segments of the Christian and other religious communities should overcome their misconceptions and prejudices of Islam and Muslims."

"If Muslims, Christians and other faith communities reach out to one another and build bridges rather than erect barriers, the whole of humanity will rejoice forever," Saleem said.

This would be the foundation of Peace if this could happen. Communication is the key and understanding that we are all on this planet together and made of the same flesh and blood.

  • This is highly important. This is my Story: I used to know only about Christianity until I once asked a Muslim to explain me Islam and to get me a different view. He told me about how they are allowed to kill in the name of Islam, told me how much they hate Jewish and how stupid Christians are for not believing in Muhammad.

I was quite shocked and kept reading and found out how Muhammad supposedly sent to behead 600 Jews and "non-believers".

Still, I know some other Muslims which are great persons (which are part of the 1 billion nice Muslims of the 1.2billion) and would never ever harm someone.

I do not think a single Religion will ever Merge or accept the other to it's 100% until the Radicals and Extremists are gone.

I respect Buddhists, Christians, Catholics, Jews, Orthodox and Muslims. But when at any point any of these go against life, freedom and rights, they HAVE to be pushed away from Society or the should stay away from Society and those who do not want anything to do with any Radical-Extremist views.

  • See, look at the picture, even the doves are trying to take the Pope out
  • It's a wonderful idea and message, but, sadly, I think there's someone out there dancing and singing "He's got hiiiiiigh hopes"... :(
  • Seperation of church and state is a strong tenet. But if religious leaders (of all faiths) can step in and get one person to stop trying to kill others, it would be worth the effort. Now, if we could convince our governments to do the same.

  • I'm all for the Pope's call for Unity on the subject of terrorism... Now how about showing some Unity for Equal Rights?

  • Without going into historic religious hypocrisies like inquisitions, pogroms, holocausts, crusades, the Third Reich, Hindu-Muslim conflicts, Buddhist-Taoist conflicts, Catholic-Protestant conflicts, etc. ad nauseum ......Doesn't it just seem to you we simply have deep in our genetic code a "tribal protector gene" as well as a "fear of different" gene...If you could genetically alter your next offspring to remove such gene or genes would you? I wouldn't...don't ask me why......I still would opt for controlling this gene...Religion would like to control this gene....Common sense would like to control this gene...It would be a better world if we all drank more and expressed our "lighten up" gene...I think I'll go do that right now...Afternoon on Friday in Wisconsin, you gotta be here...All nationalities are invited to attend...
