Children design eco-greenhouse

This story has all the makings for the "awwwww" factor:Children. Recycling. The Environment. Get ready to puke with hope.

"Primary school children in Devon are looking forward to growing fruit and vegetables in an eco-friendly greenhouse made from plastic bottles.

The pupils from Alphington Primary School have designed and constructed the greenhouse.

Building contractor Dean and Dyball helped pupils construct the timber frame. The children will finish the sides and roof with the clear bottles.

The 2,000 bottles were collected and prepared by pupils and their parents.

Teacher Phil Clarke said: "It was a brilliant project for the whole school to be involved with, especially Year 6 as they come to the end of their time at Alphington School."

The eco-greenhouse will play an important part in the children's education and school life for many years to come, he added.

The pupils will complete the construction by the end of term."

Schools all over the place should totally get down on this- recycle bottles (we have the worst water bottle habit in America!), plant some fruit and veggies that the school can use instead of that carbosludge that call food all the time. Brilliant!

    These are the sorts of school activities I am eternally jealous of, they got to build a greenhouse out of bottles? Yes please!

    We did the great balloon race once, the kid who won claimed to have received a letter from southern Italy thus beginning my days of questioning everything.

    He won a 6ft Toblerone, I died a little inside.

  • This is amazing. When I was in school we had to build bridges with popsicle sticks. It's hardly what one might call eco-friendly, but it did teach us about how bridges work. If only they had asked us to find the best way to recycle those popsicle stick bridges once we had built them...although, we were recycling the sticks in a sense, I suppose.

  • Its cute but its not exactly "eco" is it? The bottles are weak and flimsy and wont last a very long time plus these gimmicks that make us go "aww" wont help global warming. If they want to do anything to prevent it, start by restricting plane and car travel.

  • I think the whole growing food part is cooler than the recycled materials part (that's cool too, don't get me wrong). This whole movement toward schoolyard gardens is a fantastic new trend. I hope more and more schools start implementing programs like these where kids get to learn about growing food, and don't grow up thinking it just comes from the grocery store.

    Great idea and wonderful teaching.

    This greenhouse would be a good addition to the One Earth Bottle Homes. An inventive way to make a greenhouse to grow fresh produce, teach gardening and recycle plastic bottles.

    Now I know what to do with my clear plastic bottles instead of recycling them through the city.

  • ...I don't believe it! I've een an enviromentlist since I was 14 years old, running everything on solar power and chicken/human poo...and these kids and thier ides have managed too outdo me! How did I not think abou that stuff?

  • Every elementary school should have a project like this for every class and they should all have a plot of garden for each class to take care of. It will teach them to care about the environment at a young age
