Women's brains are different from men's – and here's scientific proof

Men and women show differences in behaviour because their brains are physically distinct organs, new research suggests. Male and female brains appear to be constructed from markedly different genetic blueprints.

The differences in the circuitry that wires them up and the chemicals that transmit messages inside them are so great as to point to the conclusion that there is not just one kind of human brain, but two, according to recent neurological studies.

Men may be from Mars and women may be from Venus, and since the American psychotherapist John Gray wrote his famous book, in 1992, on the idea, it has been a commonplace to think of men and women as being from different planets in terms of their emotional responses.

But until recently, these differences were often explained by the action of adult sex hormones, or by social pressures that encouraged males and females to behave in a certain way.

Increasingly, however, these assumptions are being challenged, according to a review of recent neurological research appearing in this week's New Scientist magazine, and it is becoming clear that the brains of men and women show numerous anatomical differences.

Some of these divergences, the review by Hannah Hoag suggests, could explain a number of mysteries, such as why men and women are prone to different mental health problems, why some drugs work well for one sex but have little effect on the other, and why chronic pain tends to affect women more than men.

Although it has long been known that there were some male-female differences, it was thought they were confined to the hypothalamus, the brain region involved in regulating food intake, fighting and the sex drive, among other things. But it is becoming clear that the relative sizes of many of the structures inside female brains are different from those of males.

One study, by scientists at Harvard Medical School, found that parts of the frontal lobe, which houses decision-making and problem-solving functions, were proportionally larger in women, as was the limbic cortex, which regulates emotions. Other studies have found that the hippocampus, involved in short-term memory and spatial navigation, is also proportionally larger in women than in men – "perhaps surprisingly, given women's reputation as bad map readers" says the New Scientist review.

Proportionally larger brain areas in men include the parietal cortex, which processes signals from the sensory organs and is involved in space perception, and the amygdala, which controls emotions and social and sexual behaviour. "The mere fact that a structure is different in size suggests a difference in functional organisation," says Dr Larry Cahill of the Centre for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, at the University of California, Irvine.

One area of research concerns the brain's pain-suppressing mechanisms, and points to the fact that they may be organised differently in men and women. This would explain why women can suffer long-term pain more, and why there can be sex differences in response to opium-derived painkilling drugs. The study notes: "Women get more relief from the opioid painkiller nalbuphine compared to men, whereas in men morphine is more effective and nalbuphine actually increases the pain intensity." It is possible these findings could lead to new painkillers being developed that are tailored to be more effective in women – but that is some way off.

  • This one's for the ladies. Let's hear it!!

  • Talk about confirmation of the obvious.

  • It took a team of scientists to verify this? OK. Now that we're all in the know, let's embrace our beautiful differences and press on.

  • Extremely interesting! Good post!

  • A lot of science does seem like confirmation of the obvious...but there are a large group of people with crossed arms and grim looks who won't believe anything until told to by studies (the new Jesus). Though slower than the mystics, science does get there.

  • The trouble is what use they make of this research, since you have to be careful what correlations you make from them.

Surfaces can be seen and measured, but depth must be interpreted and experienced.

So what do these differences in size of the brain correlate with how males and females behave?

  • I'm no scientist and I could have told you that. Anyone with common sense and a basic knowledge of biology could tell you males and females are wired differently.

  • Of course the map reading cliche has to be thrown out there... That is crap! Thank you Girl Scouts of America, for teaching me how to read a map. I'd be lost without you.

This is an interesting article, but like others have said, is stating the obvious, just in a more detailed way.

  • this is good and it is not pointless because theyr are ppl who get offended when its challenged that women are different than men... most of times it's meant to be an insult but these studies show that: 1) yes there is a difference and 2) it lets you how each sex works... and 3) the DRUGS... who can get what and who cant

anybody who needed a scientist to show them this has obviously never had any contact with the opposite sex in their entire life.

  • We don't think with our brain all the time,
    thats why we marry youz.
Not really but you women have said that before.
Just believe nothing you read and half of what you see.

  • Perhaps males and females will soon bifurcate into separate species...
It seems almost as though women are a higher form of the evolution of humans, and eventually the difference between men and women will be as vast (and as small) as the difference between humans and chimpanzees.

  • i happen to be an excellent map reader, thankyouverymuch!
  • This just gives people another excuse to draw stupid conclusions that have nothing to do with what was actually proven.

  • Guy here: I think it's not worth getting all emotional over. :-) hehe

I love the differences between men and women... think how boring life would be without them.... even half-way through my life I'm still bewildered most of the time by women's priorities and outlook. Sweet confusion. :-)

Brain plasticity is fairly well-established, as well. That is, we know that a person's brain can literally change size and shape from practicing certain thought patterns (this is common in meditators). From what I've read about this study, it doesn't necessarily 'prove' (as suggested in the headline chosen by news editors) that there are evolutionary, naturally-occuring differences in brains between men and women. It's entirely possible that these differences are not inherent, but rather form over time because of repeated conditioning with regards to gender roles and norms.
  • ok give the reasearchers some freakin credit, this is actually a potentially huge medical breakthrough, its not just a, men are socially and cognitively different from women thread, its a men and women are physically different and we could tailor medical treatment to said differences..

  • It's especially interesting this came out, because of the recent study linking homosexual brains to brains of the opposite sex. Further research would be needed, of course, but this could add more weight to the argument that homosexuality is not a choice. Go science, go!

  • Well I think this is just horrible. Now I know I will never find a girl that thinks just like me.

  • that explains alot
  • Maybe this information seems obvious, but my understanding is that many drug trials and the like, which the medical community relies upon, are performed only on men, and then applied to women as thought there were no difference. We need to have this information about brain differences concretely verified so that trials can be performed accurately; and drugs and procedures can be administered appropriately.

  • This is very interesting to see in plain graphic visuals.
I am sure that there are also vast diversions from the norm here such as the Gay brain.

I hope that some of these findings will help people get off of unnecessary drugs.
  • that is why girls are much more awesome and miraculous than guys. Guys were created to simply help protect and preserve the beautiful female mind. Men are built

  • This is interesting, but doesn't surprise me or give me anything I can use in my daily life. If I went around assuming these differences in men and women that I would offend a lot of people (through wrong assumptions). But on a large scale these finding could be used in a great, helpful way.

  • one more point goes to women

    while my male friend says

(name unknown for safy purposes): just because women have more POTENTIAL to be smart than men doesn't mean they ARE smarter

    (*): yea, haha, right

(*): ok fine women are smarter, happy?

  • No real surprise here then lads! .........

and (tongue firmly in cheek comment), like most products, the latest model is usually a great improvement on the original design - thanks God,
great use of a spare rib!

Rapidly moving on - women and map reading .......

As maps have historical been drawn by men using their best spatial ability, perhaps the real difference is the way women typically map.

Instead of lines and numbers, my experience is we draw pictures of the route - eg. the church, the pub, a big green area with daffodils, the green house etc etc.

It may not be the best way of designing future maps for general use but it sure works for me!

Vive la difference - male or female we're all perfect really.

  • im just really pissed off right now
    for numorous reasons

  • That may be the case, except if you have a gay brain, then all bets are off.....

  • I think this is a great story and any one who is offended or says this story is pointless is wrong. I find the brain fascinating. As the others said this could make a breakthrough in the medicine industry as well as change education and the way men and women are treated
