Whether they have diabetes themselves or have a loved one with diabetes, this chronic disease can have a powerful impact on children touched by it. See this video for some drawings of children who live close to diabetes on a daily basis and how it affects them.

  • A very moving statement of children's realities.
    Excellent work.
For future reference, I would like to hear some of these children describing day to day life with Diabetes.

  • Far too many families are affected by diabetes.
This video shows how diabetes affects children.
My Pepere Touchette and both his parents, my great-grandparents, had diabetes. My great grandmaman went blind from diabetes.
Today, diabetes is epidemic in Indian Country. Everywhere you go on reservations, there are sharp disposal boxes in the bathroom stalls because there are so many diabetics.
Go to this link for alarming statistics from IHS (Indian Health Service) on increases in diabetes in American Indian children since 1990.

"The graph below shows that a very large increase in type 2 diabetes has occurred in AI/AN youth and children from 1990-2004; a 77% increase in children under 15 years of age, and a 128% increase in 15-19 year olds. This alarming trend means that, if it continues, more and more American Indians and Alaska Natives will suffer disproportionately from renal failure, blindness, and cardiovascular complications due to the earlier onset of the disease. More and more AI/AN children are diagnosed each year with type 2 diabetes, some as young as 4-5 years of age. This is becoming a health issue for AI-AN Head Start programs."

Thanks for your video and the good work you do to spread the word on diabetes.

  • We would be honored if you watched this video and considered us for airtime. We are a small nonprofit out of the Bay Area, focused on raising diabetes awareness and connecting people with diabetes.

    Thanks,

  • What a creative way to highlight the immense responsiblity and stress these small children deal with on a day-to-day basis. I think people forget the emotional damage this has on kids.

  • My first cousin has diabetes as does my great aunt. I've seen some drawings like this from my cousins children, very heartwarming. I do like that it puts a human perspecitve on a diseas, even if it is a very prevelant one it gives a good perspctive. A gl from me.
