McDonald's apologises after group of mothers stage sit-in over breast-feeding ban

A McDonald's manager who told a young woman to stop breastfeeding found himself faced with a demonstration of Mum Power.

Maddie Reynolds returned with five friends she had met at ante-natal classes and they staged a mass feed-in at the restaurant.

'We all walked in to McDonald's together and sat around one table right by the counter,' said 27-year-old Miss Reynolds, a nursery nurse from Bournemouth. We began breastfeeding our babies all at the same time to make a point. We caused a bit of a stir among customers but none of the staff looked our way. Someone told a manager what we were doing but he just muttered that he couldn't comment.'

The incident happened at the McDonald's branch inside an Asda supermarket in the resort. Miss Reynolds was feeding ten-week-old Sophie when the staff member intervened.

'I had a proper maternity top on which is designed for breastfeeding so no one could see anything,' she said. 'I was angry when the man told me to leave but knew I wasn't doing anything wrong so I carried on. But he just stood there and watched me for a few minutes. I felt so humiliated but put my head down and didn't stop and eventually he walked off. I felt so cross and upset.'

Miss Reynolds lives with partner Karl Brackenborough, 29, who works as a television fitter and repairer.

She added: 'I choose to breastfeed Sophie because I know it's healthy and the best thing for her. I remember reading about a similar incident a while back where a woman was thrown out of a coffee shop for breastfeeding. She was so upset by it that she started using bottles instead. I wasn't prepared to let something like that happen to anyone else again.'

Fellow protester Catherine Davis, 19, took her seven-week-old daughter Amelia along to the sit-in. She said: 'I just thought the way Maddie was treated was disgusting. It's the most natural thing to feed your baby and there's nothing wrong with it. Everyone says breast is best. I have breastfed in public and no one ever has ever said anything to me. I think it's fine as long as you are discreet.'

Alison Purves, spokesman for McDonald's, said the company was 'disappointed' by the junior manager's actions. Breastfeeding mothers were welcomed in all its restaurants.

'This manager was working unilaterally and not following company policy at all. If another customer ever expressed their discomfort about breastfeeding we would encourage them to move rather than the mum. What we don't want to do is to make mums feel as if they have to hide away.'

She said the manager involved had been told he had made a mistake.

'We are confident he will make the right decision in future.'

    McBad choice.

Don't mess with a group of moms... They can be like rabid bears. They'll kick so much ass.

Nice, this is a great story. Women should be able to breast feed whenever and where ever they need to. I think we are super prudish in America, and especially something like this which is really a beautiful thing shouldn't have so much weird controversy around it.

i don't think this is right. I think it has verry little to do with people seeing breasts, and more with a sanitary issue. No shoes no shirt isn't there for the hell of it, at some point it was deemed unsanitary. It may be considered natural to breast feed, but perhaps you could do it outside. I doubt any normal resturaunt would allow you to breast feed at your table either.

Yes, SilenceNoMore, Breastfeeding is waaaaayyy too insanitary for the welfare of the public. We must protect the people from hazardous, germ infested babies especially in places where overly processed greasy food of the lowest quality is handled by countless number of people before it is eaten with unwashed hands out of a paper bag.

I say this calls for a no shoes, no shirt, and no hungry babies policy!

I can understand not breast feeding at a swanky restaurant, why you would have a baby there is beyond me, but at some place like a McDonald's? Seriously, some people need to get over their nipplephobia.

as much as the idea of a razor toothed toddler feeding from my breast makes me squeamish, i'm going to breastfeed my children. it's safe, healthy and... natural. the rest of the world should just fuck off!

Fancy place or McDonalds ... are you going to tell a mother to stop feeding her flesh and blood. Ha. Good Luck. I am a Mother, and I know how special it is to give that gift to your child. You give them your immune system.... women are amazing creatures that can do many many things... including breast feed. I would stare so deep into your soul and give you the most evil glare if you ever came btw me and my baby. Her baby... her choice.

eating at a McD's while pregnant is child abuse . the mothers are right , but it's wrong to be there in the first place .

A breast-feeding sit-in? What a nightmare! Of course, I think women should have the right to breast-feed their babies in public, but there should be some common-sensical rules of conduct. Just as I think it is off-putting to have men walk around half-naked in a restaurant, I think mothers should try to cover up as much as possible when feeding their children.

Why bother breast feeding when you are consuming garbage like McDonalds?

When will people learn to separate sex from body parts. TITS DO NOT JUST SERVE AS SEX TOYS!!! Women who are pregnant lactate for a reason... before there was this instant formula shit there were breasts and that is all you had and if want to keep your child alive and healthy that is what you gave them. I applaud these women for standing their ground and doing what is only pure and natural.

why would a mother concerned about health be at a mcdonalds? It's a good thing and all, but McDonalds? Really?

Hurrah for Mum Power!! Breast feeding is the most natural and healthy thing in the world. To anyone one who doesn't like to see a woman breast feeding - look the other way, or change your narrowed perceptions. It's McDonald's that should cover up the crap they serve as food.

Taking your babies to McDonald's? I'd hate to think what that kind of food would do to a child's development.

Hey, more power to the breast-feeders...I hope this sort of passion and willingness to make a change in society and the communities we work and live in is as intense and action-driven...
I am cool with starting with sit-ins...

Some people have the dumbest reactions to breastfeeding!! Knowing my rights and not caring about what others thought made me come in contact with some of the most ignorant people! What brought this society to believe that feeding my child the way I was intended to is wrong in any type of way? Most of the time its painful and uncomfortable so mothers should receive more support to keep it up instead of snickers and weird looks making them feel uncomfortable and unwelcome.

I would hate to think someone would tell a mother their starving children cannot eat in a restaurant.

I'm just guessing but i would have to say that their favorite would have to be breastfest. OK lets set this one straight. if you'r child is starving you obviously aren't that great of a parent! second i'm pretty sure that formula is 10x more nutritious then breast milk produced by the super sized number four you just ate! I understand that it is in women's rights to breastfeed their child. i have no problem with that. I myself am a father and fully understand the importance of breastfeeding. This is an INTIMATE connection with your child. Down to its own definition of intimate: associated in close personal relations and closely personal. It is definately something that should be done in private. Everyone has actions that are done in privacy and shouldn't be done after walking out in public. The sick thing about it is that some guy was probably getting all hot and excited in the corner booth over the exhange! Even a bowel movement is something natural and common to all. I'm sure the last thing you want to see is me relieving myself across the room discretely in a pair of depends as you get a mouthful of big mac with extra sause!!! Lets show a little consideration america!!! maybe that's just your thing though? i dont know? who knows maybe the baby was concived on taco tuesday down the street in the del taco drive-thru.

FYI Azucena why dont you just take your brilant knowledge and go make some more post in marijuana articles!!!! "Legalize it!" i find it hard to believe that you could have found time or even your breast to breastfeed with all your comments on marijuana! i do though have no problem believing that you were someones special lady for the night at one of snoop dogg's local concerts in rural Missouri. then hopped in some guys 1996 astrovan, smoked a dubbie while listening to sir cypress hill's new hit "doctor green thumb" and 9 months later had a love child.

"""if your child is starving you obviously aren't that great of a parent!"""

Sort your ignorance out chap, you say your a Father. If you are a half decent father you will know infants can often need feeding every other hour.

I suggest you go back to musing over stoned posting in Ganja snippits and leave the concerns of mankind to those capable of rational thought.
