Booze Ok, Pot Bad?

In last week's Life section of this newspaper was the headline, "Youth are dying for a drink". It continued on page C3 under "Drinking" and went on to tell about college-age deaths, which are way up from binge drinking!

At the end of the article was a very large ad for Kadota Liquors, our "drive-in" liquor store, promoting our legal drug.

In all of recorded history not a single person has ever died from an overdose of cannabis ( marijuana ). And yet my Volcano neighbor was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for growing the herb.

Alcohol ( one of the most toxic of all drugs ) is legal, while cannabis ( the least toxic of all drugs ) is not. What is wrong with this picture?

  • I agree. Now pot doesn't have the best results for your body but alcohol seems to be much worse. Pot mellows you out and makes your hungry, beer can make you crazy and dangerous

  • It doesn't really matter about what drug is less likely to harm or kill you because they are still harmful so it doesn't make any more right to take them depending on their levels of harm.

  • it seems to me that the only reason why marijuana does not have the same legal status as alcohol does to be regulated and sold to mature adults is because its almost impossible to tax by the US government....supply and demand is way up!

  • marijuana is illegal because there are no marijuana lobbyists. thats why tabacco and alcahol continue to be promoted and remain legal, theres money to be made.

  • (For daily and bi-weekly users.) Pot won't kill, It will make you passive. It will make you dumb. It will make you paranoid. It will make you easy to control. And guess what? No hangovers!!! It's just what America needs, more lazy fat passive ignorant people... I once had a friend who i thought was pretty smart guy. He then started to experiment with pot. And told me "What if 1+1 wasn't 2? But it was like 3 or 4?" Me I was like "Do you mean the words 3 or 4 mean 2?" He said "No. Like really 3 or 4" I said" do you mean like 1(a)+1(b) equals 3 or 4?" He said "No. Like 1+1= any number but 2. Like in some other universe or dimension?" I said " No! 1+1 is always 2. You may call it another name than 2. But it will always be 2. You can add variables to the equation to make it 3 or 4. But 1+1 will be, by itself always 2." He responded " But what if?"... It was then that i realized that it was the affect of the pot. Before the pot, we were avid drinkers. We were wild and crazy, and woke up with some wicked hangovers. : ) But we would regain are senses. And know that 1+1 was still 2. And for that i hate pot.

  • Marijuana and alcohol should both be considered drugs, they both fuck you up. However, alcohol seems to have a lot more side effects from hangovers to liver disease and even death, while on the other hand marijuana just gives you the munchies and lung damage. So take your pick..

  • They are both bad. While alcohol's negative effects are for the most part short term; ie a hangover. Long term affects include liver failure among other things. Marijuana only affects you in the long run; no one wakes up after a single night of smoking and forgets how to add. Both kill brain cells and are mind altering.

    However, there is not one death that can be directly correlated to marijuana use; can we say that about alcohol?

  • Almost like cigarettes... deadly but legal. Iv had alcoholism in my family for generations...alcohol killed {almost} every last one of them. I have potheads on the other side and they're all very much alive...very mellow!! but very much alive!!!!

  • It was recently reported on CNN and newspapers throughout the world that using marijuana is the best treatment for Alzheimer’s. If you use marijuana morning, noon and night it won’t progress. You may even get better. If you start using it when you’re 20 or 30 or 40, your chances are high you will not get Alzheimer’s. Cannabis has been proven to be many times more effective than the drugs currently being used to treat it. But marijuana is illegal in most places.

    Thirty percent of all medicines used 100 to 200 years ago were made out of compounds of natural marijuana. In 1964, researchers discovered the main ingredient is THC. No one has ever died from using marijuana.

    In 1974, Virginia Medical College in Richmond, Virginia did research on tumors of the lung, brain, liver and kidney using mice and rats. Incredible things were done. The cancer stopped growing and in most cases even reversed itself 100 percent. Some of the mice who were given cancer and treated with cannabis actually lived longer than some of the control mice who were not even given cancer! It was found that marijuana is the best thing to treat cancer of the lungs, brain, etc. After that they were stopped from doing anymore research at all by first Nixon and then Ford. No research with positive results could be done, only research with negative results. That’s the way it’s been since 1975 until now, even though a 1999 marijuana study turned out to be positive also.

    You live almost two years longer if you smoke marijuana morning, noon and night. This was the result of the most extensive research ever done (from 1968 to 1974). It was a $6,000,000 study done by Dr. Vera Ruben in Jamaica and Costa Rica. Today that same research would cost $150,000,000. If you smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, you will lose approximately 8-24 years off your life. If you don’t smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol you will live (in the U.S.) until about 76 for a man and 78 for a woman. But if you smoke marijuana and don’t smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, you live about two years longer than that.

    When this study came out in 1974, Nixon and then Ford dropped the most expensive research ever done on anything whatsoever. No more research of any type could be done on marijuana to prove the positive effects, only negative effects. From 1974 until now.

  • I drink socially but I find that all people want to go is get completely wasted and I think thats sad. It shows a lack of self-control and maturity.

    I don't see the true benefits to smoking pot unless its medicinal but I'm asthmatic, so I can't inhale smoke without hacking up a lung so I can't have cigarettes either.

    I am a inadvertent goody two shoes.

  • I believe in no sympathy for drug addicts or alcoholics. They are, I believe not addicts they are choosers, was one am one. ALL STUPID PEOPLE MUST DIE and eventually the smart ones to. I would encourage all drug choosers to do their drug of choice to death so that those who love you and all those whose lives you infect can be rid of your burden or choose life and share in the joy that is life free from intoxicating poisons.
    P.S. Free the weed!
