On Tuesday, July 22nd 2008, the L.A. City Council will consider bans on Styrofoam and plastic bags.

Please ask your Councilmember to support these bans to help reduce the plastic debris choking our streets, beaches and oceans.
On Tuesday, July 22nd 2008, the Los Angeles City Council will consider its staff’s recommendations to: 1) ban Styrofoam at City facilities and events; and 2) ban carryout plastic bags at all supermarkets and retail establishments beginning in January 2012 unless the state passes a bill which would impose a fee for each plastic bag. (Learn more: L.A. to Shed Plastic Image - Mark Gold's blog entry about the bans).

These proposals that the City Council will be voting on are a critical component in the fight against marine debris and the unsightly plastic litter that fouls our neighborhoods and beaches.

As a Los Angeles City resident, you can make a difference. Please call, or send an e-mail or fax (use our sample message) to your councilmember urging them to vote for the plastic bans. Even if you aren't a resident of Los Angeles, contact one of the councilmembers to show public support for eradicating plastic pollution. Lastly, come to the hearing and show your support for the bans in person!

As always, Heal the Bay thanks you for your continued support!

  • About time polystyrene (styrofoam) was banned period - it is impossible to find anyone to recycle this material due to high processing costs and low resale returns.

It amazes me that with current global concens over waste, litter and landfill, we still allow manfacture of non-biodegradable products that cannot be recycled or re-used.

  • This would be a good, start, but it should quickly go from no styrofoam to no plastic packaging at all.

  • I hate styrofoam anyway. when it breaks apart it makes the worst mess. It is so much easier to use canvas bags instead of plastic because they hold so much more. You can fit the contents of 6 plastic bags in one canvas bag.

  • Do people still use styrofoam??

  • Way to go LA city council. More laws like this need to be brought to the forefront because it shows the public that "it" has enough of a negative effect to bring up a law about "it".

  • This is a very important topic that needs to be taken on nationally and globally. Just having Los Angeles ban these non-reusable products merely puts a dent in their use worldwide. Between 500 Billion and 1 Trillion plastic bags are used worldwide EVERY YEAR!
