That was the testimony of Dr. Robert Melamede, an associate professor at the University of Colorado, who was brought in by the defense team for the four men accused in the Holy Smoke Culture Shop drug trafficking case taking place in Nelson this week.
Melamede's testimony comes on the second day of what is supposed to be a week-long trial. In a lengthy scientific explanation, the U.S. expert told the court that the human body produces marijuana-like compounds, or endocannabinoids, which act as a "lubricant" for food produced chemicals called "free radicals" that are very reactive and can cause an imbalance in the body.
"You can look at the harm caused by free radicals as biological friction or biological rust and the endocannabinoid system minimizes the impact of that and directly acts as an antioxidant as well as modifying the biochemistry in a way that minimizes the impacts," said Melamede outside court Thursday, likening endocannabinoids to humans like oil is to cars. He said if you don't have lubrication in your car, your car breaks. In the human body, the damage comes in the form of age-related diseases.
"I'm saying what science has now shown is that marijuana and cannabinoids are effective anti-aging agents which means that they are effective in minimizing the onset and the severity of age-related illnesses which include cognitive dysfunction things like Alzheimers, cardiovascular disease be it heart attacks, strokes, or clogged arteries," he said.
But while it does not work for every one, cannabis can also help those people with auto-immune diseases and cancer.
Melamede explained that you would have to take 40,000 times the therapeutic dose before causing harm to your body. But the therapeutic index for aspirin is 15 to one.
"It's extremely safe," said Melamede of marijuana, noting the overdose amount would equal 40,000 joints.
"And you die happy," added Judge Don Sperry during a rare moment of levity in Thursday's testimony.

The only thing holding up the whole legalization matter is the ignorance and greed of our gov't from Big Pharma's heavily financed, patent driven influence over Congress. How about following the rest of the world's lead when legalizing a weed provided by Mother Nature-tax it & assign merchants-instead of intentionally holding it back from potential users-recreational consumers & medicinal options for patients. The very same politicians having the power to change these laws could keep running for reelection as an added incentive.
1930s discriminatory laws making pot illegal are just plain out-dated while current medical research & freedom of choice supports usage. People are being denied the choice of choosing to smoke pot or not on the principle of “because I said so”. Other regulated substances or activities promoted by the gov’t that generate enormous tax revenues, like cigarettes, alcohol & gambling, are encouraged, while ignoring the detrimental effects these have on society's health & well-being.
Basically, legalization or decriminalization would unclog the court systems & create the room desperately needed for real criminals, so other wise law abiding citizens and their families can begin to piece their lives back together-remember the lessons learned from Prohibition? You can’t win a war on drugs-people are going to do what people are going to do regardless of what the gov’t says. And the country would just be a mellower place to live given all of the BS everyone has to put up with everyday in this once great country.

There is no such thing as a miracle drug. For every single article about this type of thing makes me roll my eyes. I believe that there are good things that stem from this lovely "drug". For every good thing there is a bad thing. This is Earth. This is the way of humans. It's balance.
I don't buy the constant good while people denounce any bad articles and praise the great. It's almost as bad as listening to someone talk about their political choice in this asinine Presidential race.
-
That's completely the wrong attitude to have J_Jammer!
People have fought long and hard to have freedom of personal choice. No one can tell you not to have sex a certain way, or eat carrots instead of peas. We can drink, smoke, buy guns, prostitutes in some areas, gamble, drive fast, and otherwise run wild in our private and personal lives. That's the freedom of being alive. Marijuana advocates don't only represent cancer patients and tokers. They represent you and your freedom to choose what you would have for you and your family. Just like Blacks or Women and their struggles with society. This one called Freedom of Choice is huge and equally decisive. It deserves equal time and respect from all sides involved. -
just one more reason we should legalize pot.

"I'm saying what science has now shown is that marijuana and cannabinoids are effective ... in minimizing the onset and the severity of age-related illnesses ... like Alzheimers"
A doctor claims that weed can prevent Alzheimers... now that's rich.

It doesn't matter how much of the scientific community agrees that marijuana is beneficial. Marijuana is illegal mainly because their is no big lobby group that can make money off of this. In fact, the pharmaceutical companies would lose money if people could successfully self-medicate.
Marijuana would be widely used as medicine if a pharmaceutical company could have patented it and produced it exclusively.

What more do they want? This is about the 50th article I've found giving us another reason to legalize it. Less dangerous than Aspirin! Come on!

Marijuana is the gateway drug, that is why it is illegal.
First you smoke weed than you will want some crack. -
First off I want to say I have smoked regularly for recreational purposes during the last 10 years. To foshibby: I have seen the following negative effect of weed. It’s hard to accomplish constructive things when very high on it. It obstructs the lungs when smoked. And it has social ramifications beyond explanation.
That said, many people react differently, I have friends that it makes anxious, and others like me that it calms.
Saying that it is a “gateway” drug is just wrong. I never tried any powdered drugs in my life and don’t intend on it. The social environment is the key factor in people consuming the dangerous ones. And in a sense keeping it illegal is actually providing an opportunity for criminals to offer dangerous and cheap alternatives to their customers. (Does crystal meth ring a bell?)
It’s not only big pharma that is in it to keep it illegal. The enforcement agencies are budgeted to wage war on it. Big oil is against wide use of hemp since it could replace most of their products. The criminal lords would loose a large market share, if not all, to legalization or decriminalization. When “high”, one does not need much to feel satisfied, this subsequently brings down consumerism. In the fractional backing system we live in, maxing a credit card is good for “growth”. All these factors combined together form the opposition to pot.
It would also be sensible that pot be integrated to society. It opens the mind among many benefits. As with all things in life, abuse of it is bad, and parents need to address this in an open way with their kids. Like teen sex, pretending it does not occur will only cause more trouble.
I believe that decriminalization is preferable to legalization.
-
I knew it! I knew combing all the effects that it already gives off, that it would only make sense that it slows down the aging process.

We used to have many uses for hemp
-
It is way better than drinking.
And I don't even smoke pot.
Just saying -
There is something mighty bad in this country....children grow up hearing how bad something is....then they watch their parents smoke themselves to death with legal cigarettes......the prisons are the largest economic building boom in America.....packed with non-violent criminals.......mostly marijuana.....marijuana a gateway drug.....well...the hinges on the gate are making it illegal and causing some rebellious souls to want to try it......being born is the gateway to dying....the hemp plant has so many good qualities that could help mankind......many that are still unknown at this time.....it is sure not something that should place someone in prison.....the only thing bad I can say is you should not smoke anything....your lungs are your bodies filter......filters catch impurities....with the way man has screwed up this planet....you get enough crap in your lungs everyday.....without adding more.....so cook with it......put it in your car....eat it......make your clothes from it......be happy.....just don't smoke it......take all marijuana victims out of prison and replace them with cigarette smokers....let them see what it is like.....also let the cops steal all their valuables and land while they are incarcerated.....the last part is sarcasm....don't want to see anybody in prison unless you have done harm to another......not just yourself.......Golden Ruler.......Will....

I always knew that excessive intake stunted maturity...
...but, THIS! Whoa, dude! -
I agree with SuringMonkey. Although the true gateway drug is alcohol, McCain08. Alcohol is legal, therefore it is somewhat acceptable and veiwed with tolerance. It lowers inhibitions as everyone knows, and that leads to experimental drug use, teen pregnancy, drunk driving, bad health, and a myriad of regretable choices. If the U.S. legalized and taxed it, they would LOSE money. Fines, Property Seizure, and Bribes all gone. We can quit using the "burden on the courts" angle.

I don’t smoke anymore (because I can’t) but I love the sweet, sweet Mary Jane. It sucks, I miss her yet at the same time I really don’t. In my opinion that’s the coolest thing about Marijuana. As fun and relaxing as Marijuana can be it was easy to drop when the situation presented itself.
