More than 10,000 people marched by a U.S. navy base near Tokyo on Saturday, calling for the Japanese government to stop the deployment of a nuclear-powered warship for the first time to Japan, rally organizers said. The protest by local residents and activists against basing the aircraft carrier USS George Washington in Yokosuka, 45 km (28 miles) southwest of Tokyo, came amid growing concerns safety after a fire on the ship in May.

"The U.S military does not disclose any information on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier's structure, as well as its navigation and accident records," said Masahiko Goto, a lawyer who participated in the protest.

"This is the same as bringing a nuclear reactor into another country. Something is wrong here. The Japanese government is sacrificing the local residents' safety for its national interests."

The USS George Washington was originally scheduled to be deployed to Yokosuka in August, but its arrival is likely to be delayed due to the fire, which left one sailor with minor burns, Japanese media have reported.

It will become the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be stationed in Japan, the only country to suffer atomic bombing at the end of World War Two.

  • It's messed up how we keep a huge military base with nuclear weapons in the only country we ever nuked.

  • funny... and i thought people in the States who are proactive were rediculous. But this could lead to something more serious.

  • I think this is highly disrespecftul given the depth of conviction the Japanese people have in their anti-nuclear policies.
  • My stepdad served in a nuclear carrier group in the late seventies. Sicily evicted his group after a fashion and he encountered a great deal of animosity while there, Peaceful nations don't enjoy the large x that comes with a carrier group or the intimidation factor of having a nuclear vessel that represents "acres of sovereign U.S. territory" in port. I think it should be thier right to object.

  • Good for Japan. I think it's great that they have enough people that care about the world to protest this ship. We don't pay enough attention to even worry about it.
  • I'm sure that the people protestign the nuclear powered vessel stationed in japan have to problem enjoying the electricity generated from japans many nuclear reactors. If they are so zealous why not shut down these reactors, there are certainly alot more of them in japan than there will ever be american nuclear vessels and unlike the carrier, those reactors will be there 24/7 365. which poses a much greater threat than one ship.
