While House Democrats fumed over the absence of Karl Rove from hearings investigating his possible interference in the Justice Department, the man himself was well on his way to the Yalta Black Sea resort, Newsweek reported Saturday.
"That's just extremely contemptuous—it shows the disdain that he has for Congress and which he has encouraged in the Bush White House," said Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee.
Rove had a speaking engagement at the fifth annual conference of the YES Foundation, which Newsweek describes as a "confab of world luminaries bankrolled by billionaire Victor Pinchuk, the Ukrainian steel magnate and son-in-law of the country's former autocratic president, Leonid Kuchma."
Rove's lawyer Robert Luskin defended his actions as justifiable given that White House counsel Fred Fielding instructed Rove not to show up because anything he said was protected by executive privilege.
"What was he supposed to do, sit at home with his lights off?" Luskin said in the article. Luskin added that this "was not something we concocted so he could make money in Yalta."
Speaking fees for Rove can be as high as $40,000, according to an article describing his controversial presence scheduled for a Texas Associated of Realtor convention this September.
Rove appeared on The O'Reilly Factor Wednesday to discount the Democrats demand for his presence: "They want a circus," he said.

O'REILLY: They gave you a little bit of a hard time, right?
ROVE: It wasn't that hard of a time. They were mostly polite. I could tell it was like Satan dropping in at the Southern Baptist Convention, they weren't exactly pleased to see me, but they were a little bit intrigued.

After his initial disappearance in early July, the House Judicial Committee voted 7-1 to reject the executive privilege Rove claimed protected him from being forced to testify.
Democrats expect judiciary chair Rep. John Conyers to hold Rove in contempt of Congress.

Jesus. Christ.
Did O'Reilly just seriously say that it was no big deal that Rove didn't show up for a SUBPOENA?
Did he just seriously compare a criminal investigation to coming on his show?
I guess I shouldn't be surprised. -
That man sickens me. The supernews has him pegged.

I'm glad he at least addressed the subpoena, even if all it meant was watching Rove squirm for a bit.

"The media is center/left"? REALLY??
If they are so left of center why no coverage by print or television of all of the now PROVEN allegations of lying us into war, torture in secret prisons overseas, etc. Early on in the "war on terror"(doesn't that just SOUND rediculous)none of the media would report on anything the administration found "unpatriotic".
They are just pissed off because the public finally woke up to what was really going on and they can't get away with the bulls..t any more. Not that they don't still try and succeed on some fronts because of ignorance of the Constitution by most of the public or misrepresentation of the same by our "esteemed leaders".They're all sycophants.-

With all of the widespread memory loss at the White House, perhaps Rove just forgot to show up at the hearings and "accidently" got on a jet to Yalta.
Yeah. That's gotta be it. -

Interesting concept. So as long as you've had a job at the WH at any time in the past you can't be arrested or prosecuted for any crimes. I think Bush is setting the stage to protect his and Cheneys sorry asses when they leave office.
Regardless, Turdblossom has to come back at some point and when he does they should arrest him the moment he sets foot on US soil. If he doesn't come back, all the better. -
If Rove & Bush have nothing to hide, then why not testify?

I am horrified and disgusted by the commentary expressed about this article. The mindless invective spewed about by the people making these comments should be censored. Karl Rove did nothing wrong legally, yet these citizens of our republic are ready to lynch him in the public square. No excuses people. Know what you are speaking of before you open your mouth. In your case I think you should keep it shut a good long while before you open it again.

donlking: Horrified? Disgusted? I'll tell you what is horrifing and disgusting. Rove has been pulling dirty political tricks his whole life. He is one of Nixon's original "Ratfuckers" i.e. Nixon's go to man when there was political schemeing and dirty deeds to be done.
As far as having done nothing illegal then perhaps he should testify before Congress to establish his innocence. And never mind this "I'll testify in private but my testimony can't be recorded" bullshit. If he's innocent he's got nothing to lose and will suceed in making the democrats look like headhunters.
But he won't testify because he's a fraud and a coward who has so many skeletons in his closet that it could be classified a graveyard. He's responsible for the politicization of the Justice Department, deeply involved in the outing of Valerie Plame, the political imprisonment of Don Siegelman and rigging elections, just to name a few things. I could literally provide a thousand links discribing this man's likely involvement in every corrupt scheme that taken place under this Administration. Bush didn't call him a "Turdblossom" because he was a sweet guy.
So don't come to this site with your sense of indignation when the man your are attempting to protect is a known fraud, liar, coward and criminal. Fox "News" will be more to your liking. Peace.
