Al-Qaeda: Winning or losing?

Image...
Nearly seven years into America’s “global war on terror”, the result remains inconclusive. Al-Qaeda lost a safe haven in Afghanistan, but is rebuilding another one in Pakistan; Mr bin Laden is at large, but Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who masterminded September 11th, has gone on trial in Guantánamo Bay; many leaders have been captured or killed, but others have taken their place; al-Qaeda faces an ideological backlash, but young Muslims still volunteer to blow themselves up.

True, America has not been struck since 2001, but European capitals have been bombed. A number of plots have been averted on both sides of the Atlantic. Al-Qaeda and its nebula of like-minded groups still pose the most direct threat to the security of Western countries, and of many others besides. Western intelligence agencies are convinced al-Qaeda still wants to develop non-conventional weapons, whether chemical or biological agents or “dirty bombs” that create a cloud of radioactivity. In Iraq bombs are already mixed with chlorine gas. Even a rudimentary nuclear bomb, say the spooks, might not be beyond the reach of terrorists.

Not a bad writing if you want to finish it by clinking the link....but....

Maybe when America elects a new and intelligent president, and this new president modifies Israeli policy and furthermore helps Palestine build a state and rebuild its infrastructure, just maybe the world will see a great reduction in the attacks from Al-Qaeda. Americas policy in Israel is the backbone of the violence. Personally, I can understand, but can the new president?

WorldPeace....again I must say that I admire you and appreciate all you do......we must realize that what we have seen explode on the world scene.....started many years ago......we are creating terrorists......souls filled with hatred all over the world.....P.T. Barnum said...."there's a sucker born every minute"....I say theres a terrorist being created every minute.....and I believe these people have a legitimate reason to be so full of hatred......try putting yourself in their place.....see you parents killed.....your sister raped in front of the whole family.....then the seed of terrorism will be planted in your soul......we must learn what pivotal moment in someones life starts this horrific roller-coaster ride....Hitler...Bin Laden...all destructive humans......it is always not knowing Love and kindness......and seeing it being applied to all life forces on this miraculous planet..........Golden Ruler......preachy on Sunday.........Will..............

WPTV? The second to last sentence gets to the heart of the troubles the US has had getting it's hands bloodied by interfering. Well put.

The term "Terrorism" breeds a never ending war, because there is no actual enemy...or atleast, the enemy has no face...to speak of.

Those who wage unjust wars are just as much terrorists who blow themselves up...

If we didnt try to take their oil, there'd be no war on terrorism...

Al Qaeda may not be winning, but can anyone say that the US is either?

Exactly Dimintri. On one hand the US is wasting money and lives on an idea that will never be realized through war. Al-Qaeda wants us out of the middle east so we should LEAVE THE MIDDLE EAST. It’s honestly that simple. If you want to defeat Al-Qaeda don’t give them a reason to exist.

On the other hand Al-Qaeda is getting their ass handed to them through the war on terror. This isn’t that big of a deal though because they wouldn’t be fighting if they weren’t already getting their ass handed to them.

Are they winning or losing? That depends on how you phrase the question.

Is their organization losing power and influence? Yes, but it always has been because they are universally hated across the Muslim world.

But in that sense, they also can't be defeated conventionally. There is NO chain of command in Al-Qaeda, they train and fund standalone operatives. The 9/11 attacks being a great example, arranged almost completely by KSM and only funded by Bin Laden.

But are they completing their objectives? I don't know the stats on Sunni Fundamentalism, so I can't say if they've been successful at transforming the middle east. I do, however, know that America is in this shitter because of our horrible Congress and President and this idiotic war. And we're completely hated by the rest of the world now, even by countries that use to like us. So one of their objectives is being accomplished.

In a way, they are winning. We haven't been successful in stopping them and their objectives are being accomplished. But if they are winning, it's clearly a Pyrrhic victory. Only Pakistan is really keeping them alive now.

Well Bush was right about one thing, the terrorists hated our freedoms so that's why they had to take them away from us.

lol zeitgeist is based on half truths. I cant believe you just claimed that was a credible source. Everyone has seen it too, colleges show it in their classrooms.

What freedom have any of you lost. Most of you are still hackie sack hippies who smoke pot everyday. If a gram is still between 10 and 25 i dont think you guys have much to complain about.

You are just so consistently ignorant clayjj. It makes me happy to see your comments. Truly. They devolve so quickly into rants against a certain type of person that I'm sure you've never even really met. We are all on the internet, are you confused? Do you think that your characterizations are impressive to any one person here? Talking as if you know what a person is like on this website just sounds silly dude.

As for the winning and losing debate, which I was just having with you clayjj on another post, I would like to compliment all who realize rather astutely that victory is not an easily definable term in this constant "War on Terror." Everyone is in the loss column at this point. Not to say that specific battles in specific arenas are not winnable, just that to simplify it into a win or lose thing is naive.

And as for the fact that the violations of our constitution perpetrated by the Oil man in the name of security affect us whether we feel it daily or not, I will fight on. I may not have been wiretapped, but unwilling and innocent Americans were. Period. How can you deny that? And as for the price of pot, that 25 dollar a G price you speak, I will fight on as well. That artificially high price is in response to the fake "War on Drugs" initiated by Nixon and followed through from then until now. Of course I can get it and enjoy it. I am thankful every day to be an American. I love my country. That's why I fight.

What are you doing to fight?

    Blog
    Calling Nancy Pelosi
    BItching
    Crying
    etc.

Ignorant about what? Not agreeing with you

"Ignorant about what? Not agreeing with you" That doesn't even make sense.

You are ignorant about the rights in our constitution that have been violated by this administration. You don't disagree with me. You haven't made one point on the subject. You find the simplest way to avoid conversation. Maybe 'fighting' is an overstatement when written online, but I am not rolling over like you. I treasure that document man. I find it more sacred than any text ever written, even with all its flaw. I guess I "fight" (in a rather pathetic and inconsequential way I admit) by trying to discuss issues with people, both virtual and real. You don't have to agree with me because that is what discussion is all about. But what is it we disagree on exactly? Do you really think we are winning against Islamic fundamentalism and terrorist tactics, worldwide? Are we even winning in Iraq? Just because people disagree with you doesn't mean they're crying or bitching. But you can put it that way if you want. I guess it makes you feel better as this administration lies its way through our social fabric, creating false choice and spreading fear every step of the way.

After all I've posted to you clayjj, all you want to talk about is my use of the term "fight"?? Cmon man. Talk to us.

This article is taylor made for young skulls full of mush.
Yeh bin laden is still out there, but it fails to mention that thousands of al queda leaders are either dead or at club gitmo. they have no organization, no way to communicate, and the rest of them are hiding in caves.
If exacting vengence for 911 is winning, we are definately winning.

au contrare. He doesn't fight loses both his life and his freedom. It has been that way since the first day of life on this planet. and no matter how much pot you smoke or how much you dream---there is nothing you or i can do about it. So for all of our good, put down the pot, turn off the john lennon, and open your eyes to the harsh realities of life.

I would rather live with the threat of terrorism than to lose my liberties while the government is trying to prevent and protect us from it.

Osama will never be found and its a waste of money to try to find him.

OSAMA will in fact NEVER be found as he is a creation of the CIA, installed to be the ghost enemy that will give them war whenever they like. He's the living Reichstag building of our time...

"montesooma": You couldn't be more wrong. People are being illegally incarcarated and TORTURED. That's not "winning" anything, it's creating more pissed off people.

I can't believe that after 6 years of this tyranny, you STILL don't understand what's really happening (war profiteering).

Good luck with that brain... It's going to need a lot of training to be able to think again.
