"At issue is a new law that toughens mandatory minimum sentences for gun-related crimes. A proposed bill will do the same for anyone convicted of a long list of drug crimes, including those caught growing just one marijuana plant."
-
There, mandatory minimum sentences have resulted in prison costs of $49 billion a year, compared with $1.8 billion in Canada last year. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the developed world, almost seven times higher than in Canada. And yet U.S. politicians and judges are concluding the explosion in incarceration has done little or nothing to reduce crime.

I don't consider smoking pot a crime against anyone or anything. Smoking pot should be legal world wide. All the time and money wasted on such a meaningless offense could be used to feed and educate people of the world. The more education people have the less real crime the world would have. Put the money to good use instead of encouraging gestapo tactics for actions that do not harm anyone.

I always think of Canada as a more enlightened country than America with its gun laws, and drug laws, its crime rate is nill compared to America. I hope they don't pass this rediculous law.
-
Haha. When I saw the article title, I thought that Canada was making it mandatory to have at least one pot plant.

Please vote in the next election and please don't vote for the conservatives!

That bloody Harper. I can't wait until the Libs are back in power.

These ever more archaic proposals are a direct result of the influence of the U.S. DEA,which has forced its own outdated and narrow-minded policies north of the border. My question is why can"t the Canadian government just ignore them and make their own laws based on the will of its citizens?Certainly there"s alot of money involved somewhere, money no one is supposed to know about.

I was arrested for .4 gram of Mary jane and thrown in Jail. What has happened to me well I no longer like my country I once wanted to join the military and fight and die for my country but being a diabetic I can't even join the coast guard. Now I hope this government burns to the ground. The illusion of freedom had me for awhile but no longer. The US is far from being a free country. Was Harming a single person from my actions? NO.Was violating anyones right? NO.Was i selling to kids or anyone for that matter? No. Yet I get thrown in a cage and treated like an animal well I dont know about that cause I treat animals better than I was treated in there. I hope to God the people in power open their eyes to what they are doing to its citizens that enjoy an herb that is far safer than pretty much every other drug out there legal or illegal

Discrimination never works, it just gets votes for political scumbags.
Thanks to Steven Harper
1) you'll get a mandatory minimum of 3 years for not having your gun registered.
2) you'll get a mandatory minimum of possibly 1 year for having 1 pot plant on your balcony of your rented apartment
3) the first thing he did when he got into office was start spouting off about gay marriage and how the whole country should spend it's time reversing this... great priorities
4) this is the same clown that publicly apologized to Bush for not having our Canadian Troops shipped off to Iraq
How did these retarded dinosaurs get into power(?) because they do not represent their own country's citizens! -
to clarify #1
simple possession of a gun with a barrel under18" without all the paperwork = 3 years even if you are a harmless old farmer committing no crime
