Decades of white flight transformed America's cities. That era is drawing to a close.
In Washington, a historically black church is trying to attract white members to survive. Atlanta's next mayoral race is expected to feature the first competitive white candidate since the 1980s. San Francisco has lost so many African-Americans that Mayor Gavin Newsom created an "African-American Out-Migration Task Force and Advisory Committee" to help retain black residents.
"The city is experiencing growth, yet we're losing African-American families disproportionately," Mr. Newsom says. When that happens, "we lose part of our soul."

Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington has become a melting pot as the area's racial mix changes.
For much of the 20th century, the proportion of whites shrank in most U.S. cities. In recent years the decline has slowed considerably -- and in some significant cases has reversed. Between 2000 and 2006, eight of the 50 largest cities, including Boston, Seattle and San Francisco, saw the proportion of whites increase, according to Census figures. The previous decade, only three cities saw increases.

In St. Louis, educated young professionals (of all races) are moving back into the city. Neighborhoods are beginning to be along socioeconomic lines regardless of race. Let us hope any trend that promotes the creation of a true melting pot continues.

It seems that the current trend is one that reflects what is happen throughout the world. Those that are privilaged and rich will live in the center of cities and the poor are being relagated to the outskirts were less resources are giving to those in outlaying communities.
In my community White people are coming in and Latinos are leaving my nieghborhood because we can't afford the cost living.
I was born and raised in North East Los Angeles and I have seen a dramatic change- White people, White trendy people everywhere, joging, opening up trendy bars, riding their bikes at night visiting trendy art galleries with (shity) post modern art that in no way reflects the community in which it resides. Riding their bikes and stoping by the taco stand down the street from my house asking me, an apparent native, in a loud white voice, "ARE THE TACOS GOOD." The annoyed and rebelous native responding, "ya their fxxxing good, I wouldn't be eating here if they weren't."
I have nothing against white people its white privilage that gets to me. My community is going to become a great place to live with great looking renovated coffman homes, the parks will get fixed up, the schools will be outstanding and it will be safe to walk the streets. Its going to be great, for WHITE PEOPLE because people of color will be living in the deserts were its hot and boring. Living hard lives because of the concentration of poverty. Stuck in a constant ciycle of violence and misery.
And people of color will be commuting to Los Angeles to doing service jobs for those privilaged people who will remain in the city.
Whites say they like my nieghborhood because it feels like a community not like the white neighborhoods on the westside. Its a catch 22.
Recently Los Angeles has passed an ordanance to shutdown taco stands. Cops raid taco stands with garbage trucks taking all the food and dumping it along with giving the taco man a fat ticket. They even want to take a way our tacos let alone our nieghborhoods -at least that's how it feels. -
