Now all Christopher Nolan, his brother Jonathan, David Goyer, and an as yet unnamed villain have to do is top it.
“I think that’s the scariest thing – to think, could we come up with a third movie that was as good as the first two? Can we top ourselves?” screenwriter David Goyer asked aloud, almost rhetorically, in a recent conversation with MTV News. “Doing it a third time would be a big proposition.”
Make no mistake about it, though, a third film HAS been discussed, Goyer confessed, revealing that, while nothing is concrete, both a villain and a theme have been bandied about.
“We’ve only talked loosely about it, though, Chris and I,” Goyer said.
Interestingly, it’s the theme, and not the villain, that most interests me, especially given how the latter seems inexorably tied to the former in this new modern Batman universe. (Fear the predominant issue in “Begins” precipitating the introduction of Scarecrow, escalation in “Knight” similarly calling for The Joker.
The fact that Goyer has a theme he wants to keep in mind for a possible “Batman 3″ means he also has a direction, a crisis, and, yes, a villain.
So what is it?
“I have one,” Goyer said laughing. “But I’m not going to tell you. Chris is very particular about that.
“I do think, though, that if there’s not a third film – these two movies stand on their own,” he added. “I think it could go either way.”
Not us. We want a “Batman 3.” So we’ll throw it out to you: Now that you’ve seen “The Dark Knight,” now that you know how it ends, what could be the theme of “Batman 3″? Who could be the villain to fit that theme? Sound off below.

I was thinking fem fatale.
Trio:
Harley Quinn
Poison Ivy
CatwomanThree women who come into town as a team that all fall for Bruce Wayne and he gets pulled into their cat and mouse game while fighting off their jealous and innate womanly motives.
With one turning to the side of good...of course...mere seconds before the destruction of Batman because a few choice words from him.

I think we need Johnny Depp as the Riddler! Who else could follow Ledger?
Add another villain in the mix to keep it interesting!

Johnny Depp as the Riddler would be good, but I always liked Mr. Freeze when I was a kid, this villain would fit in great too with the rather eerie look to the last two films. The only question though is who would play the role of Freeze the best?

Tom Hanks.
I only say him because he looks slightly similar and I want to see Tom be a baddy.
-
I think Ledger's performance opens the door to whatever actor they could imagine. Saw Dark Knight in Imax in Orlando over the weekend, I'm still mezmerized, going to see it again after work..

I'd love to see Catwoman, and if they did another Joker story line I'd want to see a badass version of Harley Quinn...
but my buddy and I were talking about the possibility of a Batman v Superman movie with another villain (or a few from each!) in it. Batman v Superman has been hinted at for a long time and has comic book nerds drooling at the thought of it- Frank Miller (who originally wrote thekickass, Dark Knight series in the comics) did Batman Vs Superman in "The Dark Knight Falls" (it's awesome and Batman has kryptonite gloves) ... Since the movie left the next villian as BATMAN himself, it's the perfect lead in to get Superman in town, hunting him. (Think of all the crazy tech Batman has that could be a threat to National Security- Government gets Superman to help them, etc)
There would probably be another villan to supplement it, or they could do a few from both comics. There is a billboard in the movie "I Am Legend" of a Batman logo with a Superman logo inside it, like a poster for a Batman vs Superman movie, which a lot of nerds took as a secret hint that it's coming.

The logo was similar but quite different. It was in the opening scene of I Am Legend where he's hunting the virus ridden deers.

At the end of The Dark Knight. Batman must be a symbol of corrupted power, even though the absolute opposite is true.
The third could be about misrepresentation. A leader must step in to lead the "Bat Hunt". They would discover his identity, and use it to manipulate him, into strengthening the case that Batman is a bad guy. Allowing the true criminal to run Gotham as their own private playground.
-
Now that they have introduced Harvey Dent, Two Face has to be in the next one.
-
I've heard a lot of calls for Harley Quinn - calls I joyously second - but introducing Harley without the Joker makes little to no sense, and the last thing I want to see is a half-assed Joker after Heath's performance.
I definitely want Catwoman, and the Riddler. And not Jim Carey this time.
-
but didn't Harvey Dent die at the end of the second one?

The Penguin played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and a vengeful adherent to the now deceased Joker, who calls himself the Riddle seeking to finish his boss' work. But definetly not played by Jim Carrey.

I have one word.....BANE.
They tried to pass him off as a second rate cronnie in a previous batman movie but in the cartoon he was one of batman's most formidable foes. Him and killer croc and the joker were the only ones tough enough and skilled enough to go head-to-head with the bat...
They could set it up as they whole city is against batman, and some of the police and the mobs join forces to call in a specialist from overseas...then bring in bane...
Im still trying to find a way to work in killer croc though...

I saw The Dark Knight today and I can give a pretty good guess at what's going to happen in the next one.
Great Movie Though!

hey this may be a non story, but the world is depressing as it is. It's just good fun when people can pause for a minute and come together to enjoy a film or any kind of entertainment, and this movie did that for a lot of people, I know I loved it, and i'm not even much of a batman fan.

I think predation would be a good theme for the next film. Its hard to imagine a darker place the series could go form here so it must be dramatic. Perhaps examine the relationship of villian and hero, criminal and victim. The joker was an anarchoterrorist, the next villain should be a predator. Should be someone feral even, like a catwoman or perhaps an arsonist like dragonfly.
I also think that a batman vs. superman could be in the works. Also why not introduce a new hero in the storyline briefly, a marvelesque spin for a Justice League film. Perhaps a Black Canary? I like the idea of an expectant double cross. Her charachter was a mob inflitrator, and in many ways was the reverse of batman, an overt hero who worked without a mask, with the apearance of a villain, and who used the apearance of weakness to lull her oponents into a false sense of security, fought them with overconfidence rather than fear. I think that could be an interesting counterpoint and I think that her charachter would be more befitting a down to earth Justice Leage that could be set in the Nolan universe.
