"(CNN) -- Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has been arrested after more than a decade as a fugitive from war crimes charges, the U.N. tribunal that charged him announced Monday.

Karadzic, 63, was the Serb political leader during the 1992-1995 war that followed Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia. He is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war.

No details of his arrest were immediately available. But the chief prosecutor for the U.N. tribunal, Serge Brammertz, called it "an important day for the victims" and congratulated Serbian authorities for taking him into custody.

"It is also an important day for international justice, because it clearly demonstrates that nobody is beyond the reach of the law and that sooner or later all fugitives will be brought to justice," Brammertz said.

He said authorities "in due course" will determine when Karadzic is to be transferred to the tribunal at The Hague.

His arrest leaves former Gen. Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb military commander, as the top-ranking war crimes suspect still at large.

Karadzic, a onetime psychiatrist, declared himself president of a Serb republic within Bosnia after the former Yugoslav republic declared its independence in 1992.

Backed by Serb-led Yugoslav troops, the Bosnian Serbs launched a campaign against the country's Muslim and Croat population that introduced the world to the term "ethnic cleansing."

In 1995, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia accused Karadzic and Mladic of leading that campaign, ordering the roundup of thousands of non-Serb civilians into camps where they were killed, tortured or sexually assaulted.

Karadzic is also charged with genocide in connection with the killings of nearly 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica, the worst European massacre since World War II."

Its about time this evil man was brought to justice.I hope the world judicial system doesn't balk by giving him life in prison rather than death. If there ever was a man who deserved to be put to death for his actions,it's this little Hitler. His twisted vision caused untold suffering for his victims and their families, and I feel there is simply no place on earth for him.Let's hope they catch the other murderer in hiding soon.

  • That genocide was so heartbreaking. I wish there was a punishment suitable for him, but even death is too good.

  • Let GOD take care of him he has not been found guilty yet.

  • Let's just hope he is successfully prosecuted in an international court of law and doesn't die before he is convicted. Precedent needs to be set in international war crimes and crimes against humanity tribunals in the post-World War II world.

Today, Karadzic. Tomorrow, al-Bashir. And the day after that, Bush?

  • Also, this guy totally looks like my favorite director, David Lynch. Kind of weird...

  • This is a massive step. The Bosnian conflict was one of the most horrific in recent history and the massacre at Srebrenica its lowest point. Footage released a few years ago (Abu Ghraib soldiers aren't the only ones who like to record the pain they induce) showed the 8000 men and boys were psychologically tortured before they were killed.

Although its claimed Karadzic has been in hiding for the past 15 years or so many journalists have reported that he would be very easy to find, regularly frequenting cafes in his hometown in Montenegro. So there must have been some political movement for this arrest to take place. Its about time.

  • Thanks everyone for bringing this conversation back round from Bush and on to the news of the day.

This is one of the world's most wanted men, and his arrest is a significant development in one of Europe's darkest moments - and we've certainly had a few.

  • For once, I would love to see one of these guys stand up and say, 'yeah I did it! And what you gonna do about it?!'
The running and hiding makes me sick to my stomache. If you can't stand by your actions come judgement day, try not doing them. I hope this man has the rest of his life to rot in a cell. Death would be too good a punishment.

The BBC has revealed that Karadzic was practising alternative medicine and living in Serbia's capital, Belgrade. He was working in a private clinic in a "very convincing disguise" (pictured above), sporting a long white beard, and calling himself Dragan Dabic, a Serb official said.

  • My heart goes out to all of the victims and survivors of this man's horrible crimes. When are we going to show this kind of initiative for other hiding criminals?

  • I've heard more about this guy today than I heard about Omar al-Bashir all of last week after being indicted by the UN for war crimes. This is in spite of the fact that the ONGOING conflict in southern Sudan makes the conflict in the Balkans look like fun. And how quickly did the US respond to that genocide?
