Full medicinal pot uses explored

"Scottish and Swedish researchers say they are researching how to get full medicinal uses of marijuana without the side-effects.

Roger Pertwee of the University of Aberdeen and Christopher Fowler, Professor of Pharmacology at Umea University in Sweden, say marijuana is a source of compounds known as cannabinoids -- one of which, THC, the main chemical responsible for the marijuana "high," has been licensed as a medicine for suppressing nausea produced by chemotherapy and for stimulating appetite in AIDS patients.

More recently, the marijuana-based medicine Sativex was licensed both for the symptomatic relief of neuropathic pain in adults with multiple sclerosis and as an adjunctive analgesic treatment for adult patients with advanced cancer.

"THC works by targeting molecules in our bodies called cannabinoid receptors," Pertwee said in a statement. "So some current research is focused on designing drugs that only target cannabinoid receptors in the part of the body relevant to the disease in question and not the receptors in the central nervous system involved in the unwanted effects of cannabis."

Another constituent of marijuana, THCV, blocks one of the cannabinoid receptors that may provide an alternative treatment route in the fight against obesity, Pertwee said.

The findings are being presented at the Federation of European Pharmacological Societies in Manchester, England."

  • I don't know why this nation is so hypocritical. Why not legalize it? I don't get it. Marijuana is also use very often in older patients. Marinnol is the name. Dr's prefer it over Megace to stimulate appetite.

    On the other hand those trees look mighty good right about now!!! (hahaha)!!!

  • The know-it-all U.S. has a whole lot to learn from the rest of the world. Once Big Pharma & the health care industry are straightened out, only then will suffering sick people get the proper diagnosis & treatment at affordable rates that they are entitled to & not dictated to who gets what by a medical system running totally out of control with the American public being taken for a ride & footing the bill.

    I should know-I slipped through the cracks starting at my PCPs office (now ex PCP who still denies I’m sick) before moving onto specialists who diagnosed & treated me, but am still fighting to regain my health almost 5 years later.

  • This makes too much sense for the big corporate drug companies its like simple arithmetic, they cannot charge one hundred dollars a dose and if the FDA was dismantled. there would be more proactive solutions to medical problems and America would be better off health wise

  • The medicinal properties of marijuana have been known for years we just have to get past the social stigma of it being labeled as an 'illegal drug'. Besides there are synthetic drugs that are much more harmful the the body then marijuana yet still met FDA guidelines. I back the use of medical marijuana 100%.
