Tourists threaten to drive out residents of Venice

A new draft law could threaten to drive even more Venetians out of Venice, seeing their houses replaced by more hotels and b&bs. For years now, there have been worries that Venice is being taken over by tourists, with the tourist market already depriving residents of over 1,000 domestic dwellings and the number of Venetians going down to 60,000 from 150,000 in the 1950s. The draft law is entitled “New regional discipline for tourism”. Article 131 invents an entirely new type of guest accommodation, the "Venetian home”—b&bs with up to 18 rooms—on the sole condition that they be decorated in “traditional or period style”. Essentially, this licenses the creation of an unlimited number of b&bs and turns existing illegal hotels into legal operations.

What Venice is in need of now is real 'regional discipline for tourism', if it is to keep some of the local character of Venice intact, though moves in this direction seem sadly lacking.

  • When are people going to realise that Venice is not going to be the same without the Venetians? If it is going to be inhabited exclusively by tourists, it will just be like a (very pretty and much older) version of Disneyland.
