Proof of citizenship now mandatory to enter the US

"It looks like any Southern California traffic jam — except you can buy a cappuccino and a 4-foot statue of Jesus from your car while watching dogs sniff vehicles for drugs.

This is the U.S.-Mexico border's most congested crossing, where local residents say already epic lines into San Diego have grown even longer since January, when the U.S. began phasing out a long-standing practice of allowing people they believed to be American citizens to enter by simply stating their citizenship.

Border guards now require most crossers to present a U.S. passport or other proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate — though they are still permitted to exercise their own judgment in order to keep lines moving. As always, Mexican citizens and other foreign nationals must show valid immigration documents to enter."

Oh my oh my, it looks like I can't forget about my documents (ID) now, I've crossed that line without a single paper too many times ...

  • Here in Arizona, there are Border Patrol checkpoints that stop traffic at least twice between Yuma and Nogales to shine a flashlight in your face and ask you "Are you an American citizen?". You don't even have to be near the border to get stopped.

  • Oh dear - my British brother and his French wife, both long-time residents in the US, are traveling around Mexico in their camper. If they don't have their green cards with them, will they not be allowed back into the US?

  • This seems like a way to give overzealous border officials a way to inconvenience Latinos.

  • "January, when the U.S. began phasing out a long-standing practice of allowing people they believed to be American citizens to enter by simply stating their citizenship. "

You *must* be joking. Last January Canadians were no longer able to use valid drivers licenses or birth certificates to enter the US. Now we are required to show passports every time. But on the southern border it's ok to say "Yep, I'm American! Let me in!"

  • I think this is a good idea to cut the illegal immigrants from over populating the U.S.

  • I don't have a problem with this. Of course, since I don't have a passport I guess I won't be traveling to Mexico City anytime soon.

  • "though they are still permitted to exercise their own judgment in order to keep lines moving"...so basically nothing has changed?

  • never enough crackdowns on that border as far as i'm concerned. we need to secure that in a major way.

  • I always find it ironic that although the majority of Americans are from immigrant families, there is such a "keep out those immigrants" mentality. Immigrants are not the problem, our governing system is the problem.

  • It's a start I guess.

The real problem is Americans smuggling illegals across or illegals overstaying their visas.

Sorry guys, illegal immigration is a greedy corporate creation. The government has no interest in stopping it because their campaign contributors rely on their cheap, unregulated labor. They're just stirring up your vote with it, they really don't care.

All this is gonna do is cause a big mess. But I suppose it's necessary.

  • Silly humans. You DON'T OWN AMERICA. You'll die in a short amount of time.
How do you want to be remembered? As a hateful person that stood for the resentment of poor people just because they want to make a better life?

No borders, No flags, No ignorance.

ps. America was "discovered" by ancient travelers then later settled by what you might call "Native Americans" (Indian TRIBES) until the white man came and KILLED almost every single one of them.

Given the choice, are YOU being that white man right now?

    I'm not.

Y si alguno se imagina que sabe algo, aun no sabe nada como debe saberlo. (meaning...if any man thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. --1 Cor 7, 8)

do we really believe we are enjoining "security"? if we pay attention it seems it's at least two birds with one stone. our soulless "government by the people" is constantly positioning to disrespect and trample human decency...and that includes any YOU feel privileged to as a 'glorious' American. "You don't even need to be near the border to be stopped." --Etheired (not surprising, once you accept the nature of the beast)

they're subversively closing in on us...Nazi style. And most of us don't even see it coming. Hitler would have been jealous

  • This doesnt do anything. Instead of going through a checkpoint you can go 10 miles over and cross by a dirt road.

  • Why don't we just make Mexico the 51st state? That would solve this immigration problem all together. We would have more resources, they would have the better standard of living they are seeking by trying to illegally cross the boarder. Win-Win

  • If the United States is supposed to be the land of freedom, folks are going to find a way in no matter what. Folks are willing to die to be in the United States, lets hope it doesn't get bloody...
    aaronklong
  • Lets hope is does get bloody. We need armed guards on those boarders. No one who doesn't have a work visa or passport should get in and if they jump the boarder it should be Marshall Law and shoot em on sight.

  • I'm not a fan of this overzealous keeping out of immigrants. My family was immigrants not one hundred years ago, and we still have more space than Europe and Asia.

However, this part: "already epic lines into San Diego have grown even longer since January, when the U.S. began phasing out a long-standing practice of allowing people they believed to be American citizens to enter by simply stating their citizenship" raises my hackles. How many of the people they just allowed were white?

This sounds like yet another excuse for a government agency to give white Americans a pass while unduly inconveniencing brown Americans.

  • I think Bill Maher had a great solution in his recent comedy special on HBO: just build a huge Wal-Mart all along the border and let the immigrants come in through the back and consumers come in through the front. Problem solved!

  • How can you have any sense of order in all that chaos? NO matter what you do its going to be a mess. People who don't belong here or ones with things they shouldn't have, are going to get in. Whether they have papers to prove their citizenship or not...

  • the fact of the matter is that by restricting immigration (and unreasonably cracking down on undocumented workers) the US exacerbates the forces pushing people to the US. Many small towns and families survive on the money being sent from the US. When we create a climate of fear amongst undocumented workers its effects are felt throughout our shared continent.

  • we are willing to invade countries and or manipulate thier gov't or politics, but never to anyones advantage, exept for monied interests and/or big biz. See iran, chile, guatamala, ect.

  • I'm no expert of this subject, nor does it effect me as much as other people, in fact it effects me very little, but I don't see what the problem is here, it's harder to get in the US from Canada than from Mexico and I don't think we have a huge illegal immigrant problem from Canada. But again, I'm not an expert.

  • And?
Look at it like this. I wanted to see Batman on IMAX but I didn't have a ticket. No ticket, no movie. No docs, no entry.

  • Mexico has been using the U.S. for a long time to get rid of their poor citizens. We are Mexico's welfare system. The people who get hurt most pertaining to the ILLEGAL immigrant is the LEGAL immigrant. Corporations want illegal immigrants , some politicians want the illegal immigrants {democrat and republican} .This is all a big show for the Americans who want illegal immigration to stop{ so is the stupid fence.} If the government wanted to stop illegal immigration all they would have to do is stop giving them government hand outs ie.{free healthcare , food stamps , social security distribution}.Then they could prosecute all the businesses that hire illegals. If the gov't would put a couple of CEOS in jail or give them very hefty fines it would slow it down immensely.

  • Like many, many Americans, I come from immigrant ancestors. As a matter of fact, my mother was a Prussian national (she's now an American citizen) and my father's grandfather was a German immigrant. However, my ancestors arrived in this country as LEGAL immigrants. They had the proper documentation allowing them to enter into and live in America. I believe everybody should be given the chance to live in America, but I DON'T believe they should be living here without permission. An Illegal Immigrant is, by definition, a criminal - that's why they're called Illegal. I will proudly wait in a long line to show my American passport in order to get into this country. If this is what it takes to keep criminals - no matter what country they're from - out of America, then so be it.

  • problem is, too many border guards seem to be slackers when it comes to enforcing such 'mandatory' regulations.
  • EXCELLENT!

I hope the lines get LONGER and the Illegals get shorter. It will be easier dealing with short aliens rather than tall ones, eh?
