Unfortunately, beyond statements of intent of many governments, I do not think that what is really marching.
Here it would involve a court in the predominantly civil law (but also criminal if applicable) to suppress international environmental damage, which are daily devastating and unpunished. What is currently non-existent. Just to give you an example. if a Ukrainian poisons a river and produces immense damage in other European countries, it is virtually impossible to pursue.

doing a search to see

the problem of territorial jurisdictions of the courts
in respect of damage to the environment,

in materia dei danni all' ambiente....

  • I think it is a great idea. The US polluted the Danube in Yugoslavia during its bombings back in the nineties, and the poison flowed through and affected Bulgaria, Romania, and the Black Sea, where many people live from fishing and have fish as their principal diet.

  • For me, a big part of the message is...
What we don't know may kill us.
What we do know may be used to prevent killing us.
To be well informed is to be enlightened.
    Accountability must follow.

  • Great Post F7! The only way to make people accountable for their mistakes that affects human life it is to bring them up for judgment and thus stopping the cycle of the repeater offender. If a person does not get caught on his wrongdoings they will come back for more until his primary offenses could start to become heavy crimes late.

  • This is definitely a good thing. It is good to see the Global community beginning to come together and recognize the need to work as a global community. It certainly seems like people having been talking about the need for this forever. Thanks for letting us know it is happening. Maybe we still can save ourselves.

  • F7, good post... The idea of an international court of law to preside over the monitoring of and the punishment of crimes against the environment, is an incredibly important idea, especially for the purpose of preserving this planet for future generations. That the U.S. should be a leader in the implementation of such an idea, is also very important, except that, when it comes to the environment, our 'so called' leaders are asleep at the wheel. They don't see us heading over a cliff.

Unfortunately, there is way too much corruption in the world right now - too many greedy politicians looking only for the next big score. It is true, this cycle of ignoring important environmental issues must change to one of more accountability. But it's difficult to make demands on a government that wasn't even elected by the people, because they are not listening to the voice of the people, only to the voices in their selfish heads...

So we can keep dreaming that this 'International Court for the Environment' will come to fruition, but until we get responsible legislators in our governments, until we take to the streets, or until a major catastrophe, like the big flood, occurs, the response to this critical issue will continue to be too little too late...leaving those in the wake, to suffer or to die...

  • I think that this movement would be one of the ways to rapid change. I well remember that the Lawyers and Attorneys went after the Tobacco Industry and start their processes from nothing and raised it to bring the liars down to their knees.
