Conventional agriculture better for the planet?

From the website:

"The path to virtue, we all know, begins with organics. Meat, milk, fruit, veggies — organic products are good for our bodies and good for the planet. Except when they're not good for the planet. Because while there may be sound health reasons to avoid eating pesticide-laden food, and perhaps personal arguments for favoring the organic-farmers' collective, the truth is that when it comes to greenhouse gases, organics can be part of the problem."

I'm not sure if i agree with this article, but it's an interesting counter argument. Truth is, there are a lot of people to feed, and it is hard to find a sustainable way of producing that volume of food.

Thoughts?

  • I think you hit the nail on the head: "truth is, there are a lot of people to feed, and it is hard to find a sustainable way of producing that volume of food". While the article raised some valid issues about growing organically, it just seems there are more issues with growing, raising and distributing non-organic (or GM) food. Truthfully though, I don't know enough about long term or widespread impacts of organic vs. non-organic food to have a definitive opinion.

  • I was just thinking that vegetarians will not like to see this picture. Anyway, my vote is up and I think it is a good discussion. The say it is that its there are not a scarcity of food but an abundance of greed.

  • The article also mentions cutting meat out of the diet will helpclimate change. Actually, if you cut meat out of the human diet completely, there won't be a food shortage. If we grew crops to feed people instead of animals (for the food supply) there would be plenty for all.

Bonus, positive effect on climate. It's a no brainer.

  • I'm a vegetarian and eat organic, locally grown, produce as much as possible (why not?)....having said that, it's a choice I made for personal reasons and I don't expect, or preach to anyone who does not conform to my diet choices. What I AM concerned about is the misconception that Genetically Modified (GM) or transgenic foods are "safe" in any way (there has been very minimal testing on them) The idea that we don't have enough food to feed the world already is another false impression...there is plenty!
The problem is that there is the profit that is to be made from a commodity that people can not live without.
Please watch these clips that give an idea of what is going on behind the scenes...I hope you will take a moment to educate yourself about what is really going on in Big Agribusiness.
