"Ballroom dancing no longer means stepping on someone's toes at your cousin's wedding. What was once considered stodgy has become sleek, sexy -- even cool.

ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," originally a summer series, became a surprise blockbuster --19 million viewers tuned in last week. All over America, people are putting on their dancing shoes and changing their lives.

Arthur Murray, one of the oldest chains of dance instruction studios, said enrollment is up 30 percent, on top of a 15 percent rise the year before.

"It is something that is softer and gentler than everything else that we're exposed to these days," Szish said. "And I think the fact that there is some level of comfort in it, there is some sort of a retro comfort in it, is what makes all of us gravitate toward it."

Even college kids are figuring out the appeal of dancing with a partner -- both the rules and the romance.

Shira, a member of the ballroom dance team at Columbia University in New York, said, "You're actually in contact with another human being. There's something really satisfying about that."

Yev and Rachel, also members of the team, became a couple on and off the dance floor.

"I think it's a great way to meet, you know, meet a girl," Yev said. "It's really nice."

Marilyn Agrelo, the director of "Mad Hot Ballroom," said maybe it's time for people to touch again on the dance floor.

"I think we're living in really challenging times, there's a lot of political dissent in the country and political division," she said. "Ballroom dancing... makes people feel secure. I think it brings people to a place that makes them feel safe and ...civilized."

I for one am glad to see that the U.S. is finally coming around to the rest of the world in the dance respect. Ballroom dancing is a really big deal in the rest of the world. It's good to see the U.S. take interest in good dancing, instead of that stupid bump and grind you see at many clubs. It's just disgusting and looks stupid and classless in my opinion.

I think shows like "So You Think You Can Dance?" and "Dancing With The Stars" has of course greatly influenced people to start dancing b/c they finally see how much fun and even sexy it can be. Furthemore, I think it's really helped the men see that it's not a demasculinating thing, but that it's actually very empowering and masculine.

I'm just curious as to peoples thoughts and attitudes towards ballroom dancing?

  • As a member of my University's Latin, and Ballroom Dance Club, I can say I dig the social aspects of formal dancing. 'Grinders' beware, the guys who take part in these clubs are bound to sweep your woman off her feet.

  • Anyone do salsa?

  • Yes, actually I do Salsa, Social Merengue, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, E.C. Swing, Samba, Bolero, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and the Bachata (which really actually disgusts me). All are American Standard of course.
  • So you teach? Where at?

  • Lol, I CAN teach, but no I do not actively teach. I said that I know the dances, not that I teach them lol
