"The Arctic is thought to hold some 90bn barrels of untapped oil, equal to Russia's total known reserves, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has claimed. The USGS says the area has three times as much untapped natural gas as oil. Drilling plans in the Arctic have been controversial, with environment groups worried about the effect on wildlife."

I think I'd probably be happier if this wasn't true to be honest; high oil prices are so close to giving us the push to renewables.

and you have to wonder how much of global warming has been helped along because of this..not the first time this administration has employed murderous tactics on behalf of oil profits.

By the time THAT oil begins to flow, we will all be supplied by wind and solar power. Enough solar power hits the earth in one hour to supply the worlds needs for a year. Better sell your oil stocks!
-
The faster we consume oil the faster we race towards extinction.
I wonder about people who believe that more oil is an answer to our energy problems. when it is in fact the greatest contributor to the greenhouse effect that is quickly destroying our planet.
The answer is NO OIL not more oil. -
I think of it this way:
There is a shortage of 3G iPhones in this country.
Suddenly we discover a series of warehouses that hold over 25 million pagers created in 1989!
So....would these pagers from 1989 really "solve" our 3G iPhone problems?
Nope.
Wind turbines, solar, geothermal --- these are the 21st century, cutting edge 3G iPhones of energy sources. They're clean, cheap, renewable, dependable, pollution free.....perfect. Clearly a massive improvement in every possible way over a 1989 pager.
Oil is the technological equivilant of a 1989 pager. Really old, really limited in functionality and just waaaaay too much trouble for what it actually does.
So it just irks me that while the rest of the developed world is getting 3G iPhones from their elected officals......Pappa Bush is promising to give us all 1989 pagers (ten years from now!!!)
Gee, thanks! -

I say dig it only because alt fuels, wind, solar, etc... going to take too long because people always leave it to the other guy to figure it out. I use 700 gallons of biodiesel a month made from restaurant grease in all of my shipping trucks, but only because I took the initiative and saw it out.

Yes, oil is a really outdated energy technology.
It was perfect for us back in 1927 -- but this is 2008 and we need an energy solution that's a little more modern.
Oil is expensive to drill, expensive to ship, polluting, nonrenewable and extremely volatile in terms of price. One day it's $50 an barrel and the next it's suddenly $150 a barrel.
Wind, solar and geothermal are all clean, cheap and stable. There are no Middle Eastern dictators controlling the world's supply of wind or sunlight.
We're at a crossroads: we can either invest billions in trying to hold on to our 1989 pagers -- or we can say, fuck it, and join the 21st century.
Build wind turbines, not oil rigs! -
Lets GO FOR IT....Start drilling NOW!
Tell the Democraps and Ms. Pelosi to shove it.....we WILL drill and there is nothing thye can do to stop it.-

I see none of you have uplugged your life yet, still burning fossils eh? hypocrites!
I think it is funny how there are millions of reserves in alaska, the rockies, in the gulf (off the shelf), and now the artic. How do they know if they have not produced a well there yet?
god bless big oil

Constant disregard, (grounds keeper willie)
how many fossil fuels have you burned in the last week?
shut up or unplug your life!
God bless big oil
God bless america -
Oil is the blood that runs through the economies body.
Sure in 15 year the solar/wind technology will be able to power the world. But today it cant..
GOd bless big oil
God bless mr burns -
Very nicely put crob80227. Oil was a leap of faith in the 1920s & now it’s time to leap again into the future. It’s time for everyone to benefit, not just a few greedy shortsighted pricks at the continued expense of the working class & what’s left of our once pristine environment. The ice is melting fast & countries are desperately jockeying for position.
When it comes to the Arctic –our last vestige of true unadulterated wilderness-no means no-absolutely no fucking way.
The solution to our energy needs lies in sustainable methods already being developed & proven to work in spite of the oil cos. opposition & the government’s intervention & stalling at every opportunity. More oil simply means higher prices, greater dependency, continued environmental damage, accelerated climate change & economic disaster for worldwide consumers. With the sun, wind, water, geothermal & other natural means-the basic elements surrounding all of us-the sustainable energy movement is well under way & gaining momentum globally as more & more people are finally realizing that fossil fuels are a dead end-like the extinction of the dinosaurs-and that renewable choices are viable alternatives just waiting to be put to use.-

the oil available is expected to last for 12 years and most of it is offshore and most of it is in territories that the united states does not control so how is this a good thing?
