"Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, speaking to thousands of Germans crowded into the heart of the city, is warning Thursday of "new walls" that could divide trans-Atlantic allies and said Europe and America must reunite to tackle wars, nuclear threats and genocide.

"In this new world, such dangerous currents have swept along faster than our efforts to contain them," he said. "That is why we cannot afford to be divided. No one nation, no matter how large or powerful, can defeat such challenges alone."

The Illinois senator hinted at strains between Europe and the United States in recent years and said that "if we're honest with each other, we know that sometimes, on both sides of the Atlantic, we have drifted apart, and forgotten our shared destiny."

Police estimated the crowd, which began gathering hours before the speech, at over 200,000, according to Michael Bengsch, media relations for the Berlin police. Many waved American flags, some shouting Obama's campaign slogan: "Yes We Can"."

  • should the repubs go ahead and pick Ron Paul now? staying with McCain is like going with that commodore 64 to do your hacking.

  • He sounds like a warmonger to me.

  • Chanting is so....what is it...so much like a...mob isn't the word...so much like a....cult. Yes, that's the word; CULT.

But I suppose that's only a word for religions that people just don't like not for people that act the same way.

If this election is as important as all say---the world is screwed.

  • The media has really corrupted this. I saw the news and people comments. He did not talk about new walls that could divide. He spoke about Walls that are CURRENTLY dividing the world and shall be taken down.

This is one hell of a Great Presidential nominee and I'm proud of looking at him and him to become the next US President.

  • READ UP:
This post is really wrong, misleading and try's to talk down on Obama. He actually did a Great Job in Berlin. Be Proud!

  • I don't see this as a bad post or a talking down to Obama, how so. He warns of future metaphoric walls.

  • "We have long believed that nobody in America is interested in our continent any more," said former German President Ricahrd von von Weizsaecker. "The appearance and the speech of Barack Obama are evidence that this preconception is false."

how is this a bad post against Obama?
    shadowtrekker
  • Again, warnings sound threatening, he is not warning everyone, he is reminding people these walls exists Today and they should be addressed.

    Do not sensationalize this!

  • Petarro - since you like Obama so much and you see this as an attack on him maybe you should read his transcript "That is why the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one
another." that speaks of new walls, not old ones.

besides, I don't know how you got that this is against obama anyways

  • @shadowtrekker, i would like to suggest that you delete and repost this file with a more accurate title.

"That is why the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another. The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand. The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand.
The walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down."

is a quote from Obama's speech transcript, and doesn't exactly reflect the title you gave this.

did you read the transcript or is that an innocent "spin" on your part?

  • I argue with shadowtrekker every chance I get, but I don't see what the big deal is here. He posted straight from the article, and he doesn't seem to be spinning what Obama said or making him look bad at all.

  • building walls is not being too Diplomatic duh

  • shadowtrekker, now that you have seen other people are complaining about the same, you should react and cut your stupid arrogance.

I don't take things in an emotional way, but Personal. I also live in this world, and posts like these can make people think you are speaking wrongly about Obama, therefore they will speak bad to other and keep the fucking chain that will end up removing votes. So cut your fucking slack and STFU. You are the ignorant. Proud arrogant!

  • Instead of arguing about what he said, let's just listen to him.

  • Petarro maybe you should consider some meds, the title nor anything said is negative to Obama. And I hate him so if it was I would appreciate it, but it isn't. Why the attacks on people for sharing, that is kinda the point of current. You seem way to sensitive about simple wording that isn't offensive. You and Plusaf shouldn't try to gang up on people for no reason, you ruin the environment of sharing and learning from others when you simply argue semantics. Not to mention it makes you look very angry and decreases the integrity of your posts among others.

  • Why is Obama in Berlin anyway? Isn't the Presidential election occurring in this country?
    gnorimo
  • Trying to mend badly broken bridges, perhaps?
    Vierotchka
  • Well, I'd say there are plenty of badly broken bridges in THIS COUNTRY (US) to worry about.

He hasn't won yet. Remember that.
    gnorimo
  • what about the genocide the US has inflicted on Iraq?
    teddy14
  • Yes, and these so called 'New Walls' he is referring to are actually existing national borders.

  • I just find it ironic that while some people in this country are currently working to uphold the Constitution by Impeaching this criminal administration (hearing TODAY!), Obama (who opposes Impeachment, calling it "tit for tat") is off in Europe furthering the domain of his own power.

I can have no faith in a candidate that is unwilling to uphold the Constitution of the United States. By refusing to Impeach, he is condoning the action of criminals.

  • More than 200.000 people were listening to Barack Obama's speech at the Siegessäule in Berlin. The democratic candidate managed to dominate the headlines for days and caused a real media-hype in Germany. But what is the secret of his success in this country? German politicans just dream about such an admiration...
