Africa: link between crop failure and climate change often missed

Climate change has a profound effect on food security in Africa, as increasing temperatures and shifting rain patterns reduce access to food across the continent.

This transpired at a conference on global warming and climate change that started in Cape Town, South Africa, on July 21 and ends today.

The discussion was organised by South Africa’s Fynbos Foundation, which aims to realise investment in the media, publishing, arts and culture sectors, and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University in the United States.

The relationship between climate change and food security is complex. Many factors influence food security, which means that often ‘‘the link is not even made between failed crops and changing weather patterns,’’ Dr Gina Ziervogel, senior researcher at the Climate Systems Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town, told the conference.

Over the past decade Ziervogel has conducted extensive research on people and the environment in southern Africa.

Climate change affects African food systems in the broadest sense of the word: ‘‘It affects the availability of, access to and utilisation of food,’’ she explained.

‘‘Changing weather patterns or extreme weather events, such as floods or droughts, can have negative consequences for agricultural production. As a result people have less access to food, which forces them to buy food products. This affects their financial situation.

‘‘It also influences their health as people often buy cheaper food which is frequently less nutritious. Especially for those who need a nutritious diet -- the chronically ill, for instance -- this poses a problem,’’ Ziervogel indicated.

Increasing temperatures and the change in precipitation and frequency of extreme weather spells also threaten African food systems, Ziervogel continued.

Changes in precipitation ‘‘are not merely about increasing or decreasing rainfall. Rainy seasons that begin later or earlier than normal or sudden rain spells hitting a region when it is supposed to be dry, have a greater impact on crops failing than a wetter rainy season that starts on time’’.

Another scenario where the effects of climate change on the vulnerability of food systems become visible is where arable land is lost. This happens as a result of declining ground water levels and rising sea levels. It can lead to aridity of the soil or increasing levels of saline.

So instead of governments dealing with climate change, they would rather give multi nationals free reign over the food supplies of their country to peddle GM foods as if that is the answer. GM foods is then not the answer to the food crisis in Africa. Dealing with and adapting to climate change is. Conservation of water is. More efficient agricultural methods is. Dealing with lack of access to food by dealing with corrupt governments is. Educating and empowering people is.

  • CANNABIS HEMP is the only known plant that can be grown from the Equator to the Arctic Circle and to the Antarctic Circle; from the mountains to the valleys, from the oceans to the plains, including arid lands and everywhere in between. CANNABIS HEMP is the healthiest plant for the ground out of the 3 1/2 million plants on Earth, because it has a root system that grows 10-12 inches in 30 days compared to one inch for rye or barley grass. The roots penetrate up to 16 feet deep and after harvest it leaves a root system that is mulched into the ground. It is the King Kong of King Kongs of all plant life.

  • Greetings all from south Texas!!!

The hurricane has passed and after 18 hours the electric is back on (in some parts) I only had enough diesel to run the generator for 12 hours. The elderly couple down the street stayed at home and they made it out okay. The hospitals are back up and running and the grocery stores are back online and have not had to get rid of any meat or milk. The public water is fine to drink and pumping to thousands of homes. Normal drilling operations will begin tomorrow morning in South Texas, as for the gulf of mex, i do not know.

When you turn on your lights or computer tomorrow, think of me jan, because I help make that possible. (That's only if you are powered by natural gas)

I know you think of me every time you gas up

    GOD BLESS BIG OIL
    GOD BLESS AMERICA

  • Actually, I think of you everytime I have gas.

  • United Nations Environment Programme

Atlas of our Changing Environment is a unique and powerful publication which brings to light stories of environmental change at more than 100 locations spread across every country in Africa. Using current and historical satellite images, the Atlas provides scientific evidence of the impact that natural and human activities have had on the continent's environment over the past several decades.

  • I think Africa has been going through drouts since i dont know the egyptian pharos.

  • And the point? People are starving NOW and need to know how to deal with the climate change that is causing that NOW.

  • people are starving because of the idiots/instability in those countries. If the global warming Hoax is actually true. I think in Texas we would have had a pretty hard time growing cotton, but since everyone that i know or have seen that are growing it, says the year is going excellently i dont buy it.

  • Climate Change is no Chicken Little or The Boy Who Cried Wolf, this is the real world. I can't stand people who are living in fairy tales. I can see the evidence with my own eyes; the world is failing.

If the earth dies, we die.

    Think about that you naysayers.

  • Well, I don't know how others feel, but I am sick and tired of having my posts gang redlighted to get them booted back. I am taking the next step then. Someone at the top needs to know what is going on here. There is no real Democracy on this site when TRASH can make it to tv here and stay in sight while important issues get VOTED BACK by jerks with a political grudge.

  • This is for you Mr. Burns! and all your oil derelicts ;)

    -you too Jan

Much Love (and kind hearted laughter) you two,
    K

  • On a more serious note..

It's sad that our habits will cause the most damage in place like this.. That didn't have much at all to do with creating the problem.

Clean air, water, rain, are all rights of every man. We should be held accountable for our actions, and reactions. (ok ok I know I'm a dreamer)

    Solution:

Permaculture could really help these people. Its water conservation, food forests, and building resistant stable local food ecosystems..

Also, Jatropha, and non-food competing, biodiesel feedstock, grows very well in arid soil. Shade conserves water loss, plant helps build soil, and prevents soil erosion. -Perfect for Africa..

    Paz!
  • Jubal tell me one way you can see the effects of global warming?

OMG its 100 degrees in Texas right now its never been this hot before.

    Except in 1930

  • "the developed countries are the greater emitters of about 87 of green house gas emission, while the African continent is accountable for about 3 per cent of the total emission. But it is true that we are under greater stress, we have more challenges to cope with, and definitely the scientists are saying that the African region is the least emitters, but we suffer more consequences of climate change and of course, we have the least ability to cope with them."

"Adaptation is very key to Africa, one, because for a long time even when mitigation measures are put in place, we would continue to have the effect of warming that is already trapped in the atmosphere."

  • This is the first time I have ever been to this site. I am an employee of ConocoPhillips. I just dont understand how you people can blame BIG OIL for all of the worlds problems, there is no evidence WHAT-SO-EVER that oil causes global warming. If anything they create high paying jobs for the people of this country and provide a much needed service. Services such as electricity for you and your family and gasoline for your cars. These are just 2 of the many things that is provided by this much needed natural resource that we have been blessed to stumble apon. Basically, what I am saying is if you hate this country, which is the best country. The likes of which any country has ever seen just leave and stay away from us because instead of making this country better than it already is, you harm it. We have no room for people like you have a nice day.

I suggest that you turn off your lights get rid of your cars and unplug your life from reality.

  • I took my car off the road last year and my house is off the grid. Hang on to your job clayjj, I'm not going anywhere.

(It's not about global warming entirely.. it's about pollution. It is UNPRECEDENTED for any creature to dump as much crap into a thin atmosphere. That is undeniable.. To think that does not have consequences... is very very silly)

I suggest you travel abroad, and take a giant step into reality.

PS. PETROLEUM CAUSES CANCER, have fun finding that study..
